A Chinese lady and her occasionally Malay racist daughter

I had dinner with my mother last night.

It was the first time I met her ever since I went to JB a month ago.

My father was not around. He was busy as usual and could not joined us.

We met up at the shopping mall near where my parents stay in Subang Jaya.

My mother had salads while I had a cheese burger.

She is the healthy conscious type, while I am just the type who considers food merely as fuel to keep on going.

My mother actually looks much younger than her age and a lot of people had mistaken her as my elder sister whenever we hanged out together.

But, the dinner last night was a bit tense.....ok, it was actually QUITE tense.

I am not going into details because what we talked about was private.

Suffice to say that we did not agree with a lot of things over the outcome of GE13.

My mother is a Chinese and she supports DAP as she believes the party and its allies could improve the country from what it is now.

As for me, I am half Chinese half Malay who supports BN and thinks that DAP is promoting chauvinism by exploiting Chinese sentiments while its allies are bigger crooks than the biggest of crooks in BN.

However, we managed to talk without raising our voice.

My mother told me that she is worried that I may get arrested for my postings in this blog these past few days.

I told her not to worry. My blog is just a new insignificant anonymous blog with very small readership. I don't think the authorities want to shut me off just because I'm venting a bit in my little blog.

After all, Malaysia is still under BN, so I guess there is still freedom of expression.

Anyway, if the authorities really want to crackdown on racialist publications, then they would have to first close down all the Chinese newspapers which had been harping on racial sentiments these past years in their effort to create the Chinese tsunami.

I know, there's that Utusan newspaper labeled by DAP and its allies as a Malay extremist publication. Now, how many Chinese newspapers are there in this country? None of them ever promoted Chinese extremist views?

Also, there are also all those people who posted all sorts of racial stuff in their Facebook and twitter. The authorities need to catch them too.

And as we are at it, why not catch all those politicians who instigate members of a certain community by telling them that they are 2nd class citizen so that they hate the "corrupted" Malay-led BN government.

Well, never mind, I think we all know that such thing will never happen.

At the end of our dinner, my mother held my hand.

It soothed my anger a lot.

She seldom offers such gesture now that I'm an adult.

And when she later on kissed me good night, I know that she still loves me....despite me now being occasionally a bit of a Malay racist.

  1. Good morning Annie,
A good friend sent me a link to your blog. We had been debating long and hard regarding the outcome of GE13, the so called Chinese tsunami and the relations between the races in our country. We are both equally concerned, even as we look at it from different sides of the political divide.

Much of what I read shocked me. Shook me even. So much anger. In particular , the loss of MB Ghani . Some comments by other readers gave a rather sinister motive for this. Race. Wanting to take over this country. Disloyal. Betrayal. Seriously?

I can't speak for everyone else. I voted for the first time this GE, and I voted opposition. I voted PR because I see them doing a decent job in Penang & Selangor (where I live). Not bad for a first time, I might add. I felt they deserved a chance , that there are viable alternatives to BN which has grown increasingly out of touch with many urban voters like myself.

You have every right to be angry. There is much anger in our country today, and for so many different reasons. I would just like to offer a contrarian view of why the tsunami has happened. That's all. Peace

    1. I live in Selangor too and I actually deplore the way Selangor is managed now.

My area used to be the best. Best road, best garden, good rubbish collection.

Now the roads are full of potholes and cracks. The rubbish collection was horibble, even though it is getting better now. The playgrounds and gardens are not well maintained. Maybe some part was not even maintained.

We send complains to local council, and they come to clean it up but after that we don't see them until our next complain.

The local council workers sleep during working hours. They slept every where even at the road side!

The Chinese eateries are taking over the limited parking space by putting their tables. Their customers then start parking the cars haphazardly causing 2 lanes to become one.

The massage parlours also mushroomed in my area. There are 3 budget hotels nearby.. you can book by the hour I think.

As a Selangorian, I'm not happy with PR management of my area for the last 5 years. I hope they will buck up now that they are still in power.

Don't worry, I will let them do their job without doing demo or wear orange or show Selangor flag upside down. That's the difference between a rational and irrational rakyat.

      Delete
    2. In all fairness, how do you rationalize they did a good job in Penang and Selangor? Investment was down in Penang, rocketing property costs, collapsing basic services, lousy water supply in Selangor, mushrooming social problems plus massage parlours in Selangor, constant political bickering even today post GE, questionable deals
( read sPice, unwatered tunnel) etc etc.

To say that you based your preference on performance is laughably pathetic. You may point to increased state coffers but do remember the asset holdings portion would be based on 2013 estimations not 2008, so of course what was 800m in 2008 would now look 1.2b. OIC, you probably don't understand economics.

Whatever, quit trying to sell your drivel, KOOL AID here. Why not you just come outta your closet and say it loud and clear that you just love pompous, chauvinist and racist PRicks and hate the Malays for whatever psycho problem in you.

    3. I live in PJ. I wonder what decent job the Dap are doing that you speak so glowingly about? Rubbish, potholes, areas not maintained well, illegal parking because lack of mbpj enforcement. Mind you i live in an elite area but it is like living in Cheras or Seputeh now. The local council is doing a lousy lousy job. 2 thumbs down for the PR govt in Selangor. If I dont see the DUN (that i didn't vote for) doing his job i'm going to make a lot of noise.

    4. Why more than 2/3 people vote for PR in SELANGOR & penang? Of course there are some still opposed and you 3 stooges have the right to say and we allow you to say. So when people vote PR, you made it into a racist and religious matter.

      Delete
    5. Those 2/3 people who voted for Pakatan knows no better than the rest who didn't. Just because they voted and Pakatan won does not mean it's right or more popular. Anyone can say what they want. Who are you to say that you allow it or not? What's wrong with you? Can't you read? I see nothing in the 3 comments as being racist or religious in any nature.
Again i ask, can't you read? They were commenting on the state of management in Selangor. There's nothing racist or religious about that.
Or is it because they dare to complain about your precious Pakatan.

  2. It's kind of funny when the so called "liberal Malays" on Twitter are rallying behind their Chinese friends - saying they are not racist bla bla bla. I doubt these people have enough Chinese friends to make such judgement.

Being a mixed blood myself, almost all my friends are Chinese, and for the last few years, they were posting racial stuff on FB on almost daily basis. Things got really bad on the day before Utusan made the headlines.

Right now they are playing the victim card that really pissed me off even more.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It is unfortunate that you have friends who behave that way. No excuses for that sort of behaviour. No excuses for inflammatory headlines in Utusan either, I should add.

But to be fair, not everyone are like those "friends" of yours. Have you considered that perhaps those "liberal Malays" have friends who are more sensible and not bigots like yours?

      Delete
    2. Anon 11:48,

Maybe the right question to ask you is "Do you support all the racist statements made by the Chinese newspapers all these years"?

      Yes or No?

No need to bring Utusan, urban Malays, liberal Malays or 10% Chinese whatever. Stop hiding behind others. Just answer the question.

If your answer is "NO", then my next question is did you write to the newspapers to ask them to stop? Did you talk about muhibbah to them?

If your answer "YES", then congratulations for being honest for the first time in your life.

Likewise, as a voter in Subang Jaya - I am very pleased by our representatives here - their involvement in the community and the way they're able to connect to people.

Which I found very lacking in the BN candidates placed here by their sheer absence. They only appeared during the polls - that too via buntings and posters with outstretched arms.

I'm not a fan of a select number of individuals in PR (due to their excessive politic-ing) but overall I'm very impressed at how they have run Selangor over the last 5 years.

In pro PR blogs too, I get similar comments when I voice certain grievances about the PR govt - That I'm a BN cybertrooper, etc. One of the more recent issue is the fiasco and jostling for MB seat in Selangor which is really disappointing and embarrassing. Other's have asked me what race I am, as if to reinforce a certain racial stereotype.

We should be able to have a civil discussion without labels and name calling. It's not like one side is flawed while the other is perfect. It's upto us to point/voice it out so that we have the best representation in the country.

Yes, I've noticed a lot of comments from actual cybertrooper teams - just purely intended to sway the discussion and turn it into a name calling fest - let us be better and above that kind of politics.

  6. In regard to MB Ghani's loss in Gelang Patah, there are several reasons. Many voters look at BN's tacit support for characters such as Ibrahim Ali & Zul Noordin, and caused many to vote against BN. Ghani paid the price for this link. Secondly, many are voting along party lines, not based on individual candidates. The clamour for change amongst new voters meant that even moderates like Ghani did not get votes.

There are several things which could have driven the Chinese to vote DAP en-bloc.

One is the ranting of Ibrahim Ali and his provocative antics.

The other is the Teoh Beng Hock issue.

I don't think it is ungratefulness to MB Ghani.

Unfortunately, racial and religious sentiments are very much a part of Malaysian political life.

On your part, you have to decide wither you want to play a part in making the situation worse or better.

Your public airing of your ongoing internal conflict does not help make the situation better.

You have Chinese blood and should be proud of it. I am proud of my mixed blood status.
I don't consider myself a racist as I have both Malay and Chinese blood; when it comes to giving negative remarks on the Chinese and Malay.
Look at it this way, you are a true Malaysian by blood by virtue of mixed race parentage. Your parents accepted racial differences to get married.

Enough to drum the message of loyalty and moderation into the minds of the Chinese. Espouse the fact that promises by Pakatan are only that. Empty promises and hot air, just like flatus. No point insulting and antagonizing the "Melayu bangang" as you choose to call them, as well. They must be made to realize just which side of their bread is buttered and who is working hard on their behalf for their benefit and for the benefit of their children.Their perception is that UMNO is corrupt, no thanks to the daily indoctrination by the Pakatan idiots through their lies and spin in cybersphere. It is through blogs like yours, presented simply but clearly, that we may be able to counter the deceit propagated by the Pakatan cybertroopers. You speak through your heart and it comes across as honest and sincere. You have done very well and I salute your effort. Please do continue. Persevere despite the odds stacked against you. InsyaAllah, you will be able to get your messages across and reverse the mindset of those poisoned by the Pakatan goons. My prayers are with you.

  22. Annie,

As much as I like to fight for the malays right in this country, I am beginning to lose faith in the ability of UMNO to sustain that fight.

One of the main reason is that, despite the call from various quarters to take the chinese head on, PM is still talking about reconciliation through his softie-softie approach.

It is obvious that he is being surrounded by what Tun M called "liberal and sophisticate malays" who do not have not tasted the pain of being second class to the chinese and he only listed to these people. They are oblivious to cocern oif the malays, only interested in enriching themselves. Make hay while the sun shine!

If the one person that we can hope to lead the malays, is behaving as such, what chances have got with the rest of them.

If his cabinet, to be named soon, comprises of softies like his cousin Hisham, Ghani, Ismail Sabri, JJ, etc.. we better prepare to be second class citizen after next GE and hope by then the malays will come to their sense and an alternative malay party will appear on the scene to take up the long battle ahead.

There were many words spoken in anger but I don't see any concrete and affirmative action taking shape..

Time to stop talking about Ghani but to discuss and agree on something that will be of use.

    2. No, I am not a red beanie or a green beanie or even a blue beanie. Just a malay who had seen enough.

I just don't want the malays to keep moaning until the sun set on our beloved land. ABC, BBC, BCL are good and I am glad the effect was already seen but we need more that that.

We can give lots of ideas but we can't have the massive impact that we need without our leaders taking up those idea and make it effective.

I am not a surprised that our "liberal and sophisticated" leaders will say "I fully support your ideas, but the government cannot take it and implement as it will disrupt the racial harmony that we have now, but please carry on"

What they really mean is, you lot are encouraged to make all the noise while I make all the money.

So, who have been taken for a ride, PAS, PKR or you lot??

      ps. I still voted BN

    3. Najib talked about muhasabah diri, identify weaknesses and take the necessary action moving forward.

      Berani kah dia?

Take the two of the most highlighted action required to improvement BN acceptability.

One, Hishamuddin had been seen as a weakling that allows the chinese to "naik tocang", to do what they see fit and not having to worry about reprisal by the authority.

Two, Rosmah was seen as a liability. Her excesses and high profile image were exploited to the hilt by PR.

Will Najib dare not to appoint Hisham to any critical ministry such as Home, Finance, Trade, Information or Defence?

Will Najib make her wife tone down and take a backstage role, just like Tun Hasmah or his mother?

      Kita sama2 tunggu?

In the meantime, we should prepare ourself such that we don't have to depend on UMNO or BN in five years time.

  26. I went for late lunch in Bukit Bintang area this afternoon at my friend restaurant, the crowd is bigger than usual and the restaurant next door which also sells Malay foods but owned by Chinese owner was rather quiet. I wonder whether it is a sign of ABC or BCL, but I surely hope so. I asked my friend about it (i.e ABC & BCL) but she just smiled.

Since I live around the area, I made an extra effort to find a Malay and Indian shop to do my grocery, which I normally do either at Giant or Cold Storage. I finally found an Indian shop near my place and bought my stuff there. The Indian lady at the counter was talking about the GE results with few people around her which favor DAP in the area, but she was quite rationale about it by saying "itu rezeki dia orang", although I could sense the disappointment from the tone. My reading is that there maybe a lot more new unfamiliar faces at her shop these few days compared to before, since there are also 7-11 and 99 speedmart around the block as well. I hope the momentum of ABC and BCL will pick up and sustain.

I notice that the DAPigs CTs now are playing angel with their more diplomatic tone or disguised as moderate Malaysians; same goes to the Star for the past 2 days. If you read the Star yesterday even the Chinese Business Chammber has thrown their support behind Najid (read in between lines of their actual attention). But who cares, now that we know their true colors so sorry to say "NOT EVEN LAIN KALILAH".

  28. aku tak tau kenapa PERKASA dikatakan racist. Adakah perjuangannya memperkasakan hak melayu seperti yang terkandung dalam perlembagaan? If that so, salah ke? Hak tersebut memang telah termaktub. Takde pulak Perkasa nak kacau hak bangsa lain. Tindakan mencium keris boleh dikatakan racist? Sepupu Najib siap mintak maaf lagi! Salah ke nak cium keris? Kenapa bangsa cina nak pertikai pulak?

30. Hello all, as a BN voter I have also gone on the Buy Chinese Last kempen. I usually send my Camry for service at the Toyota service center but the manager and mechanics there are Cina. So I spent a few hours this week driving around to find a mechanic that is not Cina. Luckily I can finally find one where there is no Cina among the staff.

My fellow BN voter also has pledged not to buy Chinese or use their services. Last Tursday his father was sent to the emergency room hospital but because the doctor on duty was Cina, he made sure his father would only be treated by a doctor that is not Cina. They finally manage to get a Malay doctor but by then too much time had passed and they had to amputate his fathers legs. I salute him for his ressilence.

Remember, if your boss assign you to work with a Chinese person, tell him flatly you do not work with Cina. Never mind if you get fired.

Goodnight. I have to take my car to the workshop again early tomorrow. They have change the oil but now the engine always over heat and make funny noises.

    1. Buy from Malay or Indian Shops; Buy Malay products - they are a lot of them now just google any item that you need. The supply chain i.e Chinese will crumble in the long run if we work together. It is is not an overnight job but will take sometime. For instance before the existence of Kedai 1Malaysia, you always hear about the essential items prices increase or shortage, now you hardly hear them.

If you go to departmental store just look for Malay or Indian salesperson and ignore the Chinese bluntly. They work on basic salary plus commission, this will hurt their pocket directly.

A lot of staff can be bought online now and operated by Malay, you just need to do extra works on this. Just ask around there are always people in the know that can help you.

I think a lot of parents are planning for their Hariraya Shopping in advance, so start planning where you should shop. If you are in KL and especially in B Bintang Area, just go to I-Setan or H&M instead of Parksons or Metrojaya. Anyhting but ABCD.
