Love thy family, even if they are DAP

It was a quiet second day of Hari Raya for me.

As usual, it's my resting day after the hectic first day of Raya.

I mostly spend my time today lazing in front of the TV, watching crap movies (such as the Ironman series) as well as Malay and Indonesian drama.

I got a bit of an indigestion from all the food I consumed yesterday. Most are oily stuff such as rendang, serunding, etc. So, I got an excuse not to go around berHari Raya with the rest of the family today.

Actually, I'm just really exhausted.

As usual, my mother doesn't spend Raya with my father and me at our Malay kampung (well, it's not really kampung anymore, as it's now more like a semi-suburban area more than anything else). It's one of those private family issue. I'm used to it as that's the arrangement since I was a child. Similarly, my father never spend Chinese New Year with my mother and me at my grandparents' place (Note: My father's parents had passed away before I was born).

I always enjoy my time at both sides of my family during these festivities.

However, as I grow older, I became more attached to my Malay side of the family. It's probably because I had all the while spend more time with my mother and her family, that it becomes a treat every time I got to spend time with my makcik and pakcik during Hari Raya.

Still, I'm more familiar with the way things are with my Chinese family side as I spend most of my childhood with them. I love them all, my grandfather, grandmother, aunts and cousins.

I love my grandmother most of all. She is the most lovely lady in the world. She is also the one who is nicest to my father. Anyway, I have never been treated differently at my Chinese family home except maybe for the food that was served for me.

Back to my Hari Raya itineraries, tomorrow there is going to be a bit of a kenduri at our family home. It's a bit of a tradition for my father's family to have the "thanksgiving" feast on the third of Raya.

So, tonight I will be a bit busy helping my aunts in the kitchen. But it's going to be fun. I can even talk politics with them as we prepare the food because my aunts are all BN supporters. No risks of getting into an argument there.

At my mother's family home, I normally just keep quiet whenever my mother and her siblings talked politics. My mother is the DAP's strongest supporter in the family. Well, nothing much I can do about that. As I had said, I love my mother and all of them.

Okay, I better do the necessary now. For those of you who celebrate Hari Raya, do continue to do so.

My celebrations will last until Monday, that is when I have to return to work.

For now, cheers everyone :-)

    Grandma's Feather Bed:

When I was a little bitty boy
    Just up off the floor
We used to go down to Grandma's house
    Every month end or so
We had chicken pie and country ham
And homemade butter on the bread
But the best darn thing about Grandma's house
Was her great big feather bed

    Chorus:
It was nine feet high and six feet wide
    Soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It'd hold eight kids, four hound dogs
And a piggy we'd stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
    On Grandma's feather bed

After the supper we'd sit around the fire
The old folks'd spit and chew
Pa would talk about the farm and the war
And Granny'd sing a ballad or two
I'd sit and listen and watch the fire
Till the cobwebs filled my head
Next thing I knew I'd wake up in the morning
In the middle of the old feather bed

It was nine feet high and six feet wide
    Soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty'leven geese
Took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It'd hold eight kids, four hound dogs
And a piggy we stole from the shed
We didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun
    On Grandma's feather bed

Well I love my Ma, an' I love my Pa
    Love Granny and Grandpa too
Been fishing with my uncle, I wrestled with my cousin
I even kissed Anne Lou oooh
But if ever had to make a choice
I guess it ought to be said
That I'd trade them all plus the gal down the road
    For Grandma's feather bed

  2. Very cute picture. Is that your picture when you were small, annie? Reminds me of my granddaughter who looks somewhat like a chinese girl because my son-in-law has chinese blood through his father. So all the cousins like to tease her as anak cina. Interestingly she will jokingly say..ya la saya anak cina, and we will all laugh over the joke. Whatever it is I love my granddaughter very much no matter how she looks like.

  3. Wonder why are the usually active commentors so quiet on this subject?

Cannot accept Annie as she is?
