An unfortunate decision to suspend The Edge

I have previously wrote this,

Shutting down The Edge will not help

Well, they actually did it today,

The Edge weekly, daily suspended for 3 months from July 27

It's too bad then.

Many will now regard The Edge people as heroes.

I'm bracing for the backlash.

I think it's the wrong move.

For me, to fight The Edge, the government should instead counter their "lies" via pro-establishment news outlets.

Of course those pro-establishment news outlets must be allowed to be credible and not excessively controlled till they were regarded as nothing more than mouthpieces of the government.

Credibility in the eyes of the public is the most important in this war of perceptions.

This is something the media handlers of the government need to understand.

They can't have lackeys to head those media organizations.

They should instead get real journalists who understand journalism and observe its ethics to convince the people that the government is doing the right things.

The government has no choice but to do this if they want the people to believe them.

After all, this is the age of information technology where the people have options from where they could choose their news sources.

If they think a newspaper is not credible because it excessively promotes the government's policies to a point of being ridiculous, then they rather read even an insignificant anonymous blog operated by a silly but cute girl.

Shutting down a newspaper, no matter how dishonest and unethical it is, will not help.

Back then at the height of racial tension which resulted with Operation Lalang in 1987, three newspapers, The Star, Sinchew Daily and Watan were suspended similar to what happened now with The Edge.

MCA-own The Star went on right after its suspension to become the number one English daily in the country, overtaking the then more established New Straits Times (NST).

The Star's circulation at the moment is about 300,000 copies per day while NST's at between 60,000 and 70,000.

Sin Chiew also became the number one Chinese newspaper after the suspension and now neck-to-neck with China Press with circulation of over 300,000 copies per day.

The Malay-own Watan, however never recover from the suspension and had since ceased publication.

Well, The Edge is Chinese-own.

So, I think it will survive and highly likely thrives after this suspension.

Anyway, I think it was extra silly for the authorities just to suspend The Edge Weekly and Daily.

The publication CEO Ho Kay Tat said,

"To our readers and fellow Malaysians, you can continue to read our work through our digital platforms like The Edge Markets, The Edge Property, The Malaysian Insider and edgy.my,"

If the authorities feel they have no choice but to be nasty, at least do it properly lah.

Just shut down the whole bloody thing. Don't let them come back to haunt you later.

As what the Malays say,

Alang-alang menyelok pekasam biarlah kepangkal lengan.

You just suspend them, they say you are evil. Then, may as well close down the whole group permanently.

But then again, the US president Obama is coming to town again later this year. He may not like my suggestion very much.

    7. Zin, u have been given otak to think but u refused. Instead u keep on saying insyaallah...if everything is insyaallah why bother commenting in the 1st place? Why even bother to participate in those PERKIM or whatever society ur claiming urself to be in? Why dont u just sit and relax and wait for ur time to die without doing a single thing? Afterall insyaallah u'll gonna b fine, worst insyaallah god will punish u for ur ignorance and ur refusal to use the greatest gift from Allah to all human being including yourself which is the brain!!!

Zin, have you not learn anything from those perkim or any religious education you have been thought since young?

You need to use your brain and put your action on something before you say insyaallah!! In this case what have you done to qualify you to mention that word? Have you check/ask your pondan bugis of the money credited into his account? Have u ask why he lied bout the cash, not knowing jlo & was never involved in 1md? Have you taken any action at all? If not, i suggest that you better be reading & understanding the teaching of Quran rather than messing around with issues that you yourself do not understand.

It's sad to know that a person who has a haji title is still lacking of knowledge.

  6. Who is in charge of PM's PR? Or even UMNO/BN strategy? Mirroring Obama is a no go, Najib is not running for presidency. Even Cameron's Tories in UK hired an Aussie for their recent win, although it took the Oz some time to understand UK politics to their advantage. Najib's image is not getting any better, in fact GST is felt more by kampung folks who voted BN, and they are not happy.

  8. This is why, the one reason things escalated to today is the failure to bugis and entire 1mdb people to answer properly from day 1. They did answer but not at all convincing. If only bugis took the initiative to explain everything crystal clear...but i suspect bugis doesnt know anything. Thats why bugis and old man isnt comparable at all.

Edge must fight this. Yes this will take long time. Kdn official statements are fully of MUNGKIN. Never know u can do things like arresting people or in this case publishing permit on the basis of MUNGKIN. That show kdn also dont know what exactly going on and how true or false the documents are. There is never any investigation on which are true which are false information. They are trying to paint everything black so that anything will be discredit. Kdn needs a reason to suspend edge and they found one on the basis of MUNGKIN.

Kdn should investigate matters and dont use MUNGKIN as its basis of action.

Hahahaha. This is why bugis doesnt know how to handle matters cleanly. Like this also cannot do well how he going to oversee things? Bugis can do fund like norway but he doesnt understand how and dont want to find out how. All let this guy that guy do in the end it escalated to this. His head on chopping block.

And the justo guy. Today got story he offered 2 mil. So who going to validate what he said? No one. So whatever he said or 'confessed' is still a MUNGKIN, no? All hearing now coming from thai police and ST for today 2 mil exposee. So if they say dont trust half true then why they now using half true?

Thats why when there is avenue to explain then got to explain. Now explain also people dont want. Bugis got to go somehow..and all because of his incompetency on handling matters and please somebody say something to salleh. He know nuts

  12. It stated that the two publications' reporting of 1MDB were "prejudicial or likely to be prejudicial to public order, security or likely to alarm public opinion or is likely to be prejudicial to public and national interest".

You suspend a publication over the word LIKELY TO BE PREJUDICIAL? This is vague reason to suspend a publication. If you were to suspend them, revoke the permit, or whatever, you have to be specific what they actually have done or wrote which made the materials to be prejudial to public order, security and national interest.

Which volume, which issue, who were the writers, what exactly they wrote, state them in details. Only then you can come to the conclusion that these publications prejudicial to public order thus warrant suspension. You can't just arbirtarily do it on flimsy ground. If the publisher decides to challenge it in court of law, they probably gonna win this.

  17. A crime is a crime. Pay or no paying or mislead to pay for a stolen data is also a crime. Let's take a step back and think about it:

    1. How do they know that the data do show that cheating had taken place before agreeing to pay the US$2mil or even looking at the data?
    2. Do they verify the data? Do they counter check with the source? Do they call up person involve to confirm that they have done this or this or that?
    3. How do they know that the data is genuine and came from the source without being tempered? Do they have people working inside that knows and can verify that it is genuine?
    4. Remember that you are not guilty until proven so or you are guilty until proven you are innocent....so what basis does they classify that cheating of Malaysian had taken place? What evidence do they have in hand that they try to mislead Justo so that Justo can give them the data? Do they have something in hand or something in their mind or something they plan to do with the data and that's why trying to mislead Justo to hand it to them the data?
    5. If they can mislead Justo, dont you think that they can mislead in their reporting as well? How genuine are they in providing an accurate report for the public to read?

Well.....think about it? Something fishy somewhere. In matters of time, everyone may know.

  18. In this age, banning is the best way to do to send the message. The problem is today people believe what they want to believe, no matter how ridiculous it is. There is no point counter argument with government media outlet because it will not change the perception. It is more like a lesson to the media to take responsibility in their publication. Like what Helen Ang said, haters gonna hate. So banning the Edge will rile up the "Haters" and cheer up the "Supporters". If they government don't, then the Haters are still gonna hate. But the "Supporters" may get disgusted with the government who is seen as unresponsive.

MPs made the law, and yet the same politicians protest and even break them. Having driven widely in Europe we had to be alert of plenty AESs all over the villages in England and Austria. The E is for Enforcement for traffic offenders, but sadly only in Selangor DE was it made a big big political issue.

Who knows what other lies is going to come out. Najib is accuse of so many things. Dulu opposition claim he had affair with Altantunya and shoddy submarine dealings with the french and supposedly french courts going to call Najib in but until now senyap jer....also they claim najib konspirasi nak jatuhkan anwar kes liwat etc but look what happen ...all proof points to anwar did really liwat saiful....tu pun nak kaitkan najib jugak....well truth always come out eventually ....i pity najib but he has to hang on...berani kerana benar.
