Getting used to living life without subsidies

The biggest local story of today is probably this,

RON95 petrol and diesel price up 20 sen from midnight tonight

I think almost everyone will be affected by it.

For the first time, I actually took a drive just to get to a petrol station to fill up my car's almost empty tank earlier this evening.

The queues at the petrol station near my home were quite long that it stretched to the road shoulder at its entry.

I drove to another petrol station about 8km away which queues were shorter.

I'm quite sure the Pakatan people are jumping at the opportunity to whack the government over this matter.

After all, DS Anwar Ibrahim had promised that he would reduce the price of fuel should he was elected as prime minister in the GE13. Unfortunately for him and his supporters, that did not happen.

But then again, was there any guarantee that everything will continue to be cheap if Pakatan comes to power?

I don't think so. They can promise the moon and the stars but fulfilling those promises would be a different matter altogether.

Anyway, for how long must we continue to live on government's subsidies?

And then, there are those who insisted that only Malaysians of certain races being the recipients of such subsidies. What an irony, isn't it?

Sometimes it irks me that those complaining the most about everything are those who are actually being among the most well off.

For instance, I don't think someone who wears branded items and regularly eats at fancy restaurants should complain too much about a bit more increase in prices of things.

Well, I know of someone whose five year old child wears Nike sneakers priced at almost RM200, who loves to bitch and blame the government about having to pay a bit more for essential items.

And some of the supposedly poor people living in squatter houses but has a car and Astro at home, I don't think they too should complain too much.

Honestly, I feel unhappy too about having to pay more for everything, but in the case of the government having to cut down on subsidies, I think I have to agree with the move.

We shouldn't continue to expect of living a life beyond our means at the expense of the government's ability to do more for the country as a whole.

    4. Chinese Subsidies mentality8 September 2013 at 03:41

Malaysians must get used to living without subsidies. Exactly Annie. Especially the Chinese. UMNO has given 24 billion of petrol and diesel subsidies every year. Where does it goes to? We can easily calculate the number of cars owned by the Chinese 70%. Percentage by capacity 80%. Mileage travel most 80% Chinese own vehicles.
This means every year UMNO government has given 20 billion ringgit worth of Petronas money to the Chinese and Indians!
That means 200 billions for the past 10 years or 400 billions for the past 20 years. The mind boggles. Yes at the stupidity of UMNO members and the Malays.
      At this simple arithmetics.

Subsidies are meant for the poor not the mercedes, bmw, alphard, bentlyey but no here in Malaysia the poor kampung Malays get nothing from Petronas. But 4WD owners get billions! UMNO Presidents and its MT cannot be more stupid. For these reasons alone we should ask them to undur! Undur lah. Habis duit Petronas bagi Cina dan India saja. The poor Malay riding kapcai get next to nothing!

Bukan itu saja, UMNO juga bagi subsidi gas kepada kilang Cina dan lain to the tune of 30 billion per year!.
Your house electric bill is only 100 ringgit per month. 1200 per year. It would take 10 million household to reach 12 billion! This means the Chinese get 25 billions gas subsidies per year!

Devious MCA minister would proclaim in the papers that the fuel subsidies were for the poor fishermen. If so then the fishermen would be millionaires by now. And some chinese fishermen owned million ringgit boats too!

So we must ensure the chinese are competitive manufacturers and reduce the gas subsidies as this is against WTO trade practices. Only the poor should get fuel and gas subsidies. And this can be done through fuel and gas vouchers just like BRIM.

As for the increase, that's life. Bitching about will achieve what actually? Cut down on the trips to TGIF,Tony Roma lah. Instead of buying Nike apparel, buy Line7 lah. Instead of buying a Samsung Galaxy S4, buy a Nokia Asha lah.

That said, the government must have proper mechanisms to ensure prices of essential goods & services do not rise disproportionately. And please review the subsidy system since a fuel guzzling SUV owner surely can afford unsubsidized fuel?

  4. Speaking of AI, his neo-con backers been observing him for sometimes, concluding most recently that AI is actually quite a dud. Hence they asked him to return home and try to become the PM, knowing full well that he wouldn't succeed of course. If he is half the man he marketed himself to be, AI would definitely be in the thick of things in the syrian crisis, doing his best to ensure the security of israel - no compromise, as previously reported in the WSJ. He could have been the one who did the false flag chemical thingy to get obama to drone out bashar assad and raze damascus to the ground. Now that these world shaking stuff had passed him by and already out of his reach, all he could do is try to reach out to najib instead. Not impressed with the "grand design" presented to him, najib turned his focus to the more mundane endeavour of getting himself reelected president of UMNO again (as well as try to get the chinese continue giving him the middle finger - addicted?), much to the chagrin of AI whose own bid for the same seat was prematurely deflected for good by the much detested pesky grand old man of UMNO, Tun M himself. Pity the man AI, but pity the wife more!

  9. The key towards a progressive nation is making its citizens more productive. In particular, it's about the kind of education that would contribute to profitable export income.

What prompted me to this comment is a very recent BBC program about how though defeated in WW2, Germany's car industry rose from the ashes, and by the 1970's was exporting profitably to the UK and US. The UK's car industry, which rested on its laurels with the thought that the commonwealth markets will always be their's, soon began to rely on huge government subsidies, but nevertheless failed.

Even more than education, it was their different mind-sets which allowed the Germans to pull ahead while held the British back. The BBC program is a good reminder of the factors which make a nation succeed, as well as those which precipitate another's downfall.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dear Annie..if your car hold like 50 litres the savings by beating the increase would be like RM 10 for the whole tank but then if you drive from one station to another and burn the petrol whilst queing, then the Rm 10 you hope to save is gone and furthermore the tension and the all the queing rises your blood level. So its not worth it I was at this European country last week , the petrol95 is priced at RM5.95 per litre and diesel RM6.40
We shouldn't complain too much unless you choose to live in Venezuela where petrol is like RM0.50cts but then the water is polluted and expensive and bread is priced at RM 7.00 per std loaf

  20. Annie,

    You are very right.

And what irked me most as well, some people would say..."what about those on low income"? These people are those that are well off but trying to justify their condescending lifestyle and negative view by trying to project an image of 'champion of the poor'. But this is achieved by pushing the buck (totally) as for them "the government is responsible to keep price down", not for us to be less greedy or more generous and tried to contribute to each other's well being, etc.

And mathematically, you are saving RM10 per tank, say 4 tanks a month on average (about 2,000 km per month), RM40 more to be spent on fuel now...But we can gain that RM40 by reducing our driving. Say fuel consumption is 8 litres per 100km, so we must reduce the monthly mileage by 238km (12%)...equivalent to 8km a day... I don't think its too difficult to do. More walking (or reduce the frequency) to 7-eleven/teh tarik sessions and Starbucks and the likes, walk/cycle to surau, less frequency to the Curve/KLCC/One Utama/Mid Valley or any other faraway shopping malls, schedule your grocery visits and after school activity/tuition runs, lunch in the office, car pool etc. Not to mention less pollution, less traffic on the road, no?

Kawan ku kencing manis kena potong kaki sampai ke paha sebab duduk tunggu giliran 8 bulan; dia mengadu kalau awal perlu potong ke bawah lutut saja dan boleh lah pakai lutut lagi .... kesian sungguh murah sangat yuran klinik gomen tapi orang miskin terhampa.
Pendek kata, si perokok yg. mampu belanja RM10 sehari dia tak layak bayar perubatan subsidi kerajaan oi! Biarlah semau orang bayar RM10 di klinik gomen - kalu betui tak mampu bayar tak payah lah ambik duit dia 100sen itu!

  26. Some of us understand why these subsidy cuts are beneficial for the country, but when you suspect these savings (at our expense) are used for cow condominiums, shoddy contractor works, excessive consultancy fees and the lot... well you can understand it's a little upsetting.

  29. This a very short note to praise Pemandu and YAB PM for reducing the subsidy to fix the Government deficit. I think people should not complain because PM and Pemandu had long hinted that subsidy rationalisation was on its way. Furthermore, PM and Pemandu have already given RM 1,000 cash downpayment through BRIM and BRIM 2.0.

Economic Dream Team . I think Minister Wahid stock is rising very fast and can soon replace Idris Jala.

In the meantime , we must condemn the statement by Fitch in trying to give Malaysia a negative credit rating. If possible, people could consider launching a police report against Fitch because of their negative comment on Malaysia economy. Malaysia economy is now very strong with palm oil price recovering. Under PM Najib and Pemandu leadership we will enter into high income economy and everybody can then buy high power car, like in US where the car is usually very big. Only is that to pay for oil, we have no subsidy. I think it is okay

    1. With the amount of money spent on Pemandu and its consultants, they can do better than dishing out money to the supposedly poor through BR1M. How many of the recipients are really deserving.

Using those monies to create economic opportunities, improve efficiency and reducing toll gate keepers might make more sense.

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorist have to pay RM2.85 per per litre for RON97 petrol after a price increase of 15 sen after midnight.

Malaysian Petrol Dealers Association president Datuk Hashim Othman who confirmed the price hike told New Straits Times that the retail price of RON97 is fixed based on a managed float, with the monthly price determined by market forces.

Hashim believed the price hike would not affect the low and middle-income earners because the fuel is commonly used by luxury car owners.

“As far as the public is concerned, the government is firm in its policy on there being no subsidy for RON97, which is for high-performance vehicles. So prices are set at market values,” he said.

The RON97 petrol previously saw an increase to RM3 a litre in September 2012. However, the price was subsequently reduced to RM2.90 in March and cut again by 20 sen after the 13th general election to RM2.70.

  36. As long as the economy is well managed, there should be no subsidy - except for 'targeted subsidy' meant for helping those truly in need.

Since Singapore is so pro BN, why not learn a thing or 2 from them?

    1. Housing Subsidy (to buy, not rent). In Singapore, even someone earning 1,000 a month can buy a $100,000 HDB flat. The government actually provides a $60,000 grant. Here's how:
