Menolong Bumiputera

I'm too lazy to write following my lost of interest in things due to the less than inspiring going-ons in the run up to the Umno elections.

So, I'm just doing a copy and paste job here of a story I lifted from that very user unfriendly website of NST with certain paragraphs highlighted for those who are equally lazy to read the whole bloody article.

So enjoy ya.

Initiatives to solve Bumi issues

HIGH GEAR: Government-linked companies show that there is strength in diversity

PUTRAJAYA: PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak will unveil on Saturday sweeping measures to shift the Bumiputera agenda in Malaysia's development to a higher gear.
The measures would cover not just economic aspects like equity ownership and business activities, but also human capital and socio-economic development.
Najib will announce the initiatives at a special event to be held at Universiti Teknologi Mara in Shah Alam, and aired live at 10.30am on RTM and TV3.
This will be one of the biggest announcements by Najib on the Bumiputera agenda since becoming prime minister.
The measures come on the heels of Barisan Nasional's victory in the general election, with reinforced support from the Malay electorate.
"The initiatives to be unveiled by Najib on Saturday will transform further the Bumiputera economic agenda," said an official involved in discussions on the plan.
"He will also announce measures to strengthen Bumiputera institutions such as Mara, Teraju, Ekuinas and UDA."
At a media briefing here yesterday, ahead of the announcement, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Senator Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said while the Bumiputera agenda had recorded commendable progress so far, more needed to be done.
"We may have more Bumiputera professionals in the legal field, doctors, architects and engineers, but still lack in other fields.
"Among certified accountants, for example, only eight per cent are Bumiputera."
Wahid said the Bumiputera Agenda Action Council, which Najib chairs, had held consultations with various agencies and non-governmental organisations.
"A recurring issue is the lack of employment opportunities for Bumiputera in the private sector, especially at the executive level.
"While government-linked companies (GLCs) have embraced equitable employment opportunities for all at various levels, the private sector still needs to be encouraged to do so."
He said GLCs like Maybank, CIMB, Axiata and TM had proven that embracing equitable employment opportunities was not a hindrance to success in business.
"In fact, Maybank and the other GLCs have proven there is strength in diversity."
Another issue is the level of commercial property ownership by Bumiputera which was still low, hindering their participation in the retail sector.
Wahid said recent data showed only five per cent of transactions of commercial properties involved Bumiputera, which deprived them of suitable business premises to grow their enterprises.
"Something must be done to improve the capacity of Bumiputera to buy commercial properties."
On Bumiputera equity ownership, the minister said it had improved to 23.5 per cent in 2011 from 2.4 per cent in 1970 at par value.
At market value, the level of ownership is at 26 per cent.
"Continued efforts will be made to increase the figure further," he said, adding this is done among others through Permodalan Nasional Bhd and Ekuinas.
The long-standing supply chain problem encountered by Bumiputera businesses, especially contractors, must also be addressed.
Wahid said Bumiputera contractors were facing problems in getting building materials at affordable prices.
"Among the reasons cited by the suppliers are that they are small and one-off buyers, so they could not buy on credit term.
"We may have to look at the possibility of establishing alternative supply for these contractors," said Wahid.
After the Bumiputera Agenda Action Council meeting late last month, the prime minister had announced an additional RM4.2 billion worth of opportunities for Bumiputera companies to participate in four mega projects.
The four projects are Menara Warisan Merdeka, Bukit Bintang City Centre, development of the Rubber Research Institute land in Sungai Buloh and Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) exhibition centre.

    1. Tanah Melayu untuk Melayu12 September 2013 at 20:50

    2. Peperangan Melayu Perniagaan14 September 2013 at 19:37

It is so simple. Melayu boleh menang any time dengan duit Kerajaan Melayu yang banyak. Cuma masa ini ramai sangat Wahid satay yang niat baik tapi poor in execution.
Tapi dah ramai dah MBA melayu.
Tak perlu kerja untuk syarikat Cina.
Mydin one man show beli pukal dari Cina dan jual murah.

Get that in your thick head.

Macam mana pula?
Sape suruh dia datang sini?

      Sape bodoh dia miskin.

Macam kata Anon 18:10, org kaya je lah yg kaut untung.

Tak pecaya ... bila harga RON95 naik, peniaga kecil yg hanya boleh buka meja akan terjejas teruk ... kos petrol naik tapi harga barang tak boleh naik kata menteri ... pendapatan kami berkurangan betul ... org nak jimat, jadi tak beli barang kami ... kami hanya dapat termenung je nasib dibawah PM.

Ade PM faham keadaan kami ?
Pemimpin UMNO Cawangan pun tak mahu tahu nasib kami !!!

  7. HOW ABOUT RESERVING 30% OF ALL SHOPPING CENTER RETAIL SPACE FOR RENT TO APPROVED BUMIPUTRAS, BASE ON WHAT THE BUSINESS CAN AFFORD TO PAY, such as at 10% of the business' net profit, payable annually? Bear in mind that even at 50% discount, the rent may still be unaffordable! Government only needs to pass a law to achieve this objective. Bumi business will boom!

The Malay Chamber of Commerce Malaysia and Malay rights group Perkasa have alleged discrimination against Malay businesses by major shopping malls, who refuse them prime space.

According to the chamber’s secretary-general Hanafee Yusoff, products by Malay entrepreneurs were usually "hidden".

"Bumiputera products are of high quality, thanks to the government's assistance resulting in their products achieving the standards set, but most shopping malls place these local brands in hidden locations," Hanafee told Malay daily Sinar Harian.

Hanafee argued that because of high rentals, Bumiputera traders "find it quite difficult to compete with international brands".

He called for more lots to be reserved for Malay retailers and cited the New Economic Policy, which he said ensured equal wealth distribution between races through 30% Bumiputera equity rule.

Echoing him was Malay right-wing group Perkasa, who zeroed-in on the Suria KLCC mall in Kuala Lumpur.

    1. Yup, I agree wholeheartedly. We could address this scenario to help the Bumi entrepreneurs to have a fair share in this game and smashes the lopsided monopoly. New provisions enacted via local council or ministries involved such as the federal territories and local government could do wonder to struggling businesses hoping to break into prime areas. The government have the power to do that. All that is needed is the will and some balls to stand up to bigwig business moguls.

  9. GLCs To The Rescue!

PETALING JAYA , Sept 4 — Concerned with the growing jobless rate of Bumiputera graduates, a coalition of some 200 Malay groups are lobbying Putrajaya to set up more government-linked companies (GLCs) to absorb the load.

They believe that with the federal government's intervention, the struggle to forward the Bumiputera economic agenda will be enhanced to benefit all groups in the country by creating more jobs and grow businesses.

"Back in the day, after graduating, you can just join the civil service.

"But now, the civil service sector is too saturated, the government cannot afford to create 500 to 1,000 new jobs every year," Hasan Mad, secretary-general of the Malay Consultative Council (MPM), told reporters here today.

The alternative was for the private sector to pick up the slack, but Hasan said the rate at which private limited companies were growing "is too slow".

"So it is faster and easier for the government to set up new GLCs," he said.

    1. No need to tax them more.. Just cut off all subsidies on petrol, food items etc. Then give these to Bumiputras at discounted rates min 30%.

The Chinese should not make noise as this has been the traditional everyday practices among the Chinese - everything at discounted 'for Cina' rates. Rampant even at Lowyat..

See, my kids are fluent in all Chinese dialects including Mandarin (from SJKC). For their computer needs, they help shop for their college mates (parents as far as Perlis wld contact my kids to help purchase items from Lowyat). He can easily get a discount of RM200-350 for them. Even haircuts instead of RM16 they only need pay RM12!!

Barang2 basah kat pasar pon sama.

  13. Malays got to ask themselves, since the inception of NEP 40 years ago, what have been achieved so far?

    Gov give:

Education. Healthcare. Business assistance. Monopoly on Gov contract and supplies. Heavily subsidized Agriculture and fishery industry. Felda/Federal with free land for settlers. Discount on property.

Despite all these, Bumiputeras still fail to get good grades in school, when given seats in public uni based on Quota, they fare even worse.

Despite given the leg up in contract jobs, they sub-contract to others, fail to create Bumiputera backed business ecosystem like creating supply chains.

Despite given boat, allowance, diesel, and much more, they sell the diesel and fish to Vietnamese and fish in the middle of ocean.

When given seeds and fertilizer with proper irrigation channel created, they still sub-contract their paddy field to China man or Indonesian illegals.

When given license to operate stall, they sublet to Pakistanis or Indonesian.

When they obtained rights to lease PPR home, they sublease it to others.

Here's the worst part. When a Bumiputera become successful to the point that they can compete in open market, they tend to keep the spoils to themselves. They monopoly the contract and supplies in gov and GLCs and not allow others to advance the ladder. Hello Syed Mokhtar, NAZA, Ahmad Zaki, and the rest. Why are you still fighting with smaller players? Go out of the country and seek new venture lah.

Despite the attitude, gov from time to time had to come up with new ideas like allocating big chunk of contract to Bumiputera bidders. More allocation for this and that.

While the rest of the world move along with globalization, inventing new ideas, competing with USA, we are still fighting over a small slice of cake, which is the government handouts. They think the Jews and Christians are out to kill them. They are always in constant paranoia believing themselves as victim.

Why? Because the reason Bumiputeras keep on failing. And when they fail, they blame others for their failure. Solution? They go to Nik Aziz to seek his prayer and guidance. They think Nik Aziz is god-sent. They think he has special connection with God.

Well, guess what? If you don't work hard, nobody's going to help you.

    Another Bumiputera.

    1. Well said. But, I think this only apply to UMNO and UMNO-related malays. There are many others who not only survived but thrived, albeit not on the scale of Al Bukhari or Naza but they are successful on their own field, without having to bribe or spend a fortune entertaining those in power.

We can see many typical UMNO scums, when they lose the battle amongst the crooks, the joined the opposition or seek external intervention. They and their clans think they have the divine right to rule, control and fleece the country.

Tak dapat rumah murah, mereka maki kerajaan. Dah dapat, mereka kata rezeki dari Allah. Tak payah terima kasih kepada kepada kerajaan.

Elok laa perangai tu.

  14. I do not see all these programs as helping to push bumiputera up the economic ladder. It was nothing more than a smokescreen to cover those feeding frenzy by UMNO loyalists, feeding on whatever left of the wealth gathered through the hard work of their predecessors.

Mark my word, when the programs are rolled, you take a peek through the covers of bumiputera chosen to participate, there are hordes of friendly nons.

The government had been handing out billion for capital expenditure on infrastructure but where are the money to operate and upgrade those infra? Simple, you make money through projects, not operation and maintenance.

Back in the 70s and 80s, the government spent million on sending malays to study abroad. This is one investment that really push the malays up. Now the government spent a lot lot more on projects, whilst our younger generation still required to memorise facts in local universities.

So, don't bet much on this current leaders to change us malays. We need a new leadership or even a new government.
