Aftermath of Umno's wings elections

I received this text message just now :

"Ada beberapa Fb page & blogger yg sincere with umno tak kn back up umno lagi during PRU 14. Sbb kj & shahrizat menang. Ada yg tak kn klar mengundi. Dh fed up."

The sender of that text message is an Umno supporter but not a member. She made a point to take a bus to go back to her faraway hometown to vote for BN during the 13th General Election.

Well, that's about sum up the consequences of the Umno wings elections' outcome.

Honestly, I don't mind too much about Khairy Jamaluddin winning, but Shahrizat winning almost unopposed was quite hard for me to swallow.

Now my only hope rests on Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir winning a vice-president seat a week from now.

If he also loses, then I think that's about it for me as far as Umno is concerned.

After that,

    1. From the Pemuda & Wanita results, Mukhriz is losing the VP race.

After the elections are over and the UMNO establishment are entrenched once more, the Najib-Badawi axis is going hunting down all those in Mahathir’s camp across the Divisions now.

      Sad to see that happens…

You know the forbidden tree......once you tasted the fruit, theres no escaping the serpent's menacing coils. Is UMNO really in the 'pit' now, having reached the bottom of the cliff??

Surely winning the GEs interminably provide them with a false sense of security which lulled them into not feeling the descent and not seeing the rushing rockbottom.

  9. Well this is why UMNO will continue to decline in the next election. There is a terrible disconnect between what outside voters want for wanita chief in particular. If the system changes to include outside votes, m very sure datuk maznah wld have gotten many votes, same thing for d mukhriz. The urban malay vote is not seen as important, what is critical is the vote of rural masses.

    4. It is useless arguing against imbeciles, Annie. They will twist their knickers any which way to win the argument, so it is pointless taking them on. And for all you know these "true" supporters are of the makan suap, perut boroi variety. Better you enjoy 'ur Sunday siesta than getting livid with a bunch of el stupidos.

The point about the UMNO elections is that it was supposed to rejuvenate the party, reinvigorate it and reposition it as the vehicle to defend Malay/Muslim interests within the context of the Malaysian nation state. That was what the voting pattern in GE 13 intimated. Time and again the feedback I got while I was on the ground with the grassroots Malay was that this was and is UMNO's last chance. The Malays, whether rural or urban, voted in UMNO because they hung on one forlorn hope:

      1. It will reinvent itself as a party that puts Malay interests first.

And they did so not because UMNO was the best vehicle but because there was NO other choice at all! Now these folks are mighty disillusioned.

The stats dont lie, they never do. PAS votes in 2013 as usual hit their limits up of around 15%. That was about as much as they could get. Look at Wiki since 1999, to see the pattern:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_general_election,_2013

Yet despite almost hitting their limits, they could not budge UMNO which still garnered around 30%. But that 30% has been declining from around 35% or so in 2004. And who has been gaining the Malay vote at the expense of UMNO and PAS, why PKR of course!. UMNO has been propped up not by its core support all this while but by the Malay fence sitters who have opted for it as the lesser of two evils especially when one portion of that evil has the DAP in tow.

Now that cohort of fence sitters are clambering back onto the fence, not because they pro or anti Mahathirites but because they are fed up with broken promises and outright lies. And campaigners on the ground are feeling shortchanged of having to wave the red rag against a raging bull of dissatisfaction so much so that many have virtually given up. It is a sinking ship actually. and as an added dose of reality, dont ever assume the contemporary rural Malay is stupid or can be taken for a ride. He/she is as astute as he/she can be. In 2013, they were pissed off with PAS and leery of PKR. That is increasingly no longer the case as falling rubber and palm oil prices, questionable FGV purchases, rising living costs and limited employment opportunities for their local university educated offspring eat into their goodwill. And those educated offspring are bringing tales of spiraling house prices, marginalised existence in cities and pro-Chingkie policies back to their home villages. And with PAS moving back to touch base with its conservative heartland and PKR launching a Malay charm offensive, you got the perfect storm in the making for GE 14.

Personally, I reckon the establishment stance has also a lot to do with global geo-politics hence the disconnect with what is going on at the ground. Simply put, they are beholden to certain geopolitical heavyweight's interest as the opposition are, know it and have given up the ghost and have opted for gasak time.

So even if the ordinary Malay shifts his allegiance come 2018 (as I expect him to), he is screwed both ways unless he does the bidding of his ultimate master.

But I understand your predicament and that of your fellow blogging pals. My take is simple: since our counsel is worthless,by default our vote is automatically so. So why bother at all. Sad but true.

Paklah lasted 5 years, Najib may go a little longer but definitely not any stronger. Hence, Mahathir is still the standard bearer - as far as UMNO leadership is concerned. No surprise some still longing (unrealistically) for him to be back in the lead, the way we pined for arwah Tun Razak way back post 1976.

"There was no negotiation; absolutely none. Instead of talking directly with the IPPs, TNB was sitting down with the EPU. And we were harassed, humiliated and talked down every time we went there.

"After that, my team was disappointed. The EPU just gave us the terms and asked us to agree. I said no way I would," Ani reveals in his recently released memoirs.

Ani, who was under a lot of pressure to sign the agreements, felt the deal was morally wrong and lopsided.

"If it is legal and not fair, I will not do it. If it is fair and illegal, I still won't do it. It has to be legal and fair," he says.

      Sharp hike in power tariffs

According to Ani, TNB at that point was producing electricity at 8 sen a unit (kWh) and this could be delivered at 17 sen per unit.

However, the IPPs were producing electricity at 23 sen per unit, therefore TNB would need to charge consumers no less than 30 sen per unit.

Btw, I spoke to some UMNO youth members who attended last week voting. They said they were given specific instruction by their division of who to vote for. So technically KJ and Shahrizat need to take care of just a few hundreds scums instead if 140,000 as said by Najid. Much easier than the 2000+ in the previous system.
