The concept which died on May 5, 2013

The Chinese dilemma

’KONGSI’ CONCEPT: Each side has to sacrifice something so that the other can gain something

IN response to the emergence of a Malay political party,  Umno and its success in rejecting the British inspired Malayan Union, the Chinese community of the 1940s saw the need for a political party of their own to present their views to the British government.
Thus was the MCA conceived and born, led by Malacca's Sir Cheng-Lock Tan. Although it was intended to counter the influence of Umno and protect the interests of the Chinese community, events changed the strategy and role of the MCA.
In 1952 the Kuala Lumpur Umno leaders and the Kuala Lumpur MCA branch leaders decided that in the Kuala Lumpur municipal elections, they should not contest against each other, but instead should support each other's candidates in their respective constituencies.
The results startled them as they defeated almost all the non-racial parties. Realising the political advantage of cooperating with each other the Tunku (Abdul Rahman) and Sir Cheng-Lock Tan, and senior leaders of the MCA and Umno decided to formalise their cooperation by setting up the Alliance, a coalition of MCA and Umno.
The basis of this coalition was the idea of supporting each other and sharing the power gained. Buoyed by the success of the Alliance party in the 1955 elections, in which the MIC had joined, the Tunku looked more kindly at the proposal of Sir Cheng-Lock that citizenship should be based on jus soli (citizenship by being born in the country) and not jus saguinis (citizenship based on the Malaysian citizenship of the father or mother, i.e. citizenship based on blood relation).
The Tunku did not quite agree but he nevertheless decided to give one million citizenships to unqualified Chinese and Indians.
With that the confrontation between the Chinese and the Malays changed into positive cooperation.
It was a classic kongsi that was set up. The essence is an undertaking to share. Sharing involves a give and take arrangement, in which each side has to sacrifice something so that the other can gain something.
As the Malays made up the majority of the citizens they naturally led the Alliance. But the Chinese and Indians were not without adequate power. In any case Malay political power would be mitigated by Chinese and Indians' voting and economic power.
The Tunku saw immediate benefit from the "kongsi" as he believed Malays only wanted to be government employees and the Chinese wanted to be in business. There would be no conflict or tussle between them.
The Indians would fill up the professional posts. He did not foresee the days when government could not create enough jobs for the greatly increased number of Malays.
The kongsi Alliance worked well. But in 1963 Singapore joined Malaysia.
Immediately the PAP tried to gain Chinese support by condemning the Alliance kongsi for being disadvantageous to the Chinese.  Malaysians, said the PAP, were not equal.  There should be a Malaysian Malaysia where all the benefits should be based on merit alone, with the best taking everything, irrespective of race.
Without saying so in so many words the PAP was inferring that the Malays did not deserve their positions. The best people should rule the country. In the eyes of the PAP, Singapore was ruled by the best qualified people. That they happen to be almost all Chinese is incidental.
In the 1964 elections the MCA and Malaysian Chinese generally valued their cooperation with the Malays. They rejected the PAP and its chauvinistic appeal, giving it only one seat.
The Tunku realised what the PAP was up to and decided that Singapore should not be a part of Malaysia. But the PAP was not done. The remnant of the party in Malaysia set up the DAP to carry on the Malaysian Malaysia meritocratic formula for undermining Chinese support for the MCA.
Harping continuously on the so-called Malay privileges and the unfairness to the Chinese, the DAP slowly eroded the idea of kongsi in the multi-racial coalition of the Barisan Nasional.
Despite the fact that the Barisan Nasional supported Chinese education and the use of the Chinese language, the DAP convinced many Chinese that the Chinese, their culture and language are not given proper treatment by the Barisan Nasional coalition.
The MCA was attacked for not doing enough for the Chinese.

Realising the political advantage of cooperating with each other, Tunku Abdul Rahman, Sir Cheng-Lock Tan and senior leaders of MCA and Umno decided to formalise their cooperation by setting up the Alliance, a coalition of MCA and Umno.

Anonymous is right the Chinese youths dont care. Neither should we the Malays. It is time to right the wrongs that was done to us by Christian British. Thanks to the Japanese, the Europeans were chased out of Asia and other parts of the world.

Look at the force eviction of Malays in Singapore www.gudangkuning.com by the Chinese PAP. This is genocide by the Chinese and this should reminds us that the struggle against China is not over.

China PRC sent over 1 million chinese reservists to Singapore and this should ring alarm bells to Malays leadership. Not Najib or Muhyidin those nincompoops but to the younger generation of Malays.

Moving forward we must understand the gunting dalam lipatan like TalentCorp. Did UMNO members or Supreme Council agree to spend 65 million to bring back Chinese and Indians who were ungrateful to the country?

We must stop the rot. Now! Today!

Leave this Tanah Melayu to us after all we are the sons/ daughters of this soil. So when are you going to berambus?

  4. Our perception and feelings towards the Chinese changed 360%, drastically after the results of the last GE. Well they said its politics and question of choice but when almost 90% of the Chinese voters rejected the way of moderation and of sharing of peaceful coexistence and respect between the various races, then we must reflect what really does the Chinese wants .
The government since Merdeka have been very accommodating and bends almost backwards to give and assist the Community in having their own schools, newspapers, culture, burial ground etc etc. Most business even the Halal ones the Chinese wants to monopolise. They are just happy to employ Malay as workers and in most places the salaries scale for Malays are lower for the same jobs
If for instance the hard core Chinese of Seputeh, Puchong, Ipoh Timor or Bukit Bendera will definately not vote for the BN, coalition, that we do understand, we understand that corruption and issues like mismanagement will and are always there esp in states led by PKR . For instance the instigators and promoters of Corruption is the way of the Chinese people and promoted mainly by the Chinese. Corruption, like gambling and prostitution is the way of Chinese doing business. Look at the gift and hampers that the Chinese business people make available , to solicit favours and its a Chinese way.

But when they entirely reject the MCA /Gerakan like that and where ever there exist 40% or more of the Chinese voters in the constituency , the BN lost. a total rejection. The odd MCA/Candidates candidates scraped through mainly because of Malay votes.
The politics of hatred of jealousies of being not thankful and respect of the racial harmony expoused and drilled by the old hag devil chief, Lim Kit Siang became their calling.
They wanted to UBAH and the message of UBAH is clearly to get rid of BN and UMNO dominance.
We now have a totally different feeling and attitude towards the Chinese.
We support the campaign of not buying from Chinese shops for example
This comment will definitely be shouted back with vehemence by the Chinese Red Bean troopers

    3. The same here. I'm lucky that I don't live in Malaysia anymore as I don't have to see their cHINAkui face day in and day out. I really hate the Chinese so much that I do not want to meet my husband's Chinese friends. But my husband says his friends are ABCs (American Born Chinese) and ABCs hate other Chinese especially from the mainland China, Malaysia and Singapore. Another thing, most if them do not know how to speak Chinese and have lost their Chineseness identity. Based on these reasons, maybe I might be willing to meet one of his ABCs friend who is married to a White and we will see how it goes from there.

  6. In Rome Do As The Romans Do.

Malaysian Chinese will profit more by bearing that in mind. There's really no point in never ending quarrels.

As TDM said above: The Tunku saw immediate benefit from the "kongsi" as he believed Malays only wanted to be government employees and the Chinese wanted to be in business. There would be no conflict or tussle between them.
The Indians would fill up the professional posts. He did not foresee the days when government could not create enough jobs for the greatly increased number of Malays.

Meanwhile, an additional career route is taking shape for those suitable and are more adventurous: check out http://www.blacklistednews.com/Meet_Your_New_Boss:_Buying_Large_Employers_Will_Enable_China_To_Dominate_1000s_Of_U.S._Communities/26527/0/38/38/Y/M.html.

Establishing business linkages will be the most rewarding mode of engagement.

So, let each race fulfills its destiny the Merdeka Way!

  7. For the first time in my life, my perception towards the Malaysian Chinese is nothing but of suspicious nature. I will always feel that this race is either, going to hate me, cheat me, pouch on me or even to kill me. My resolution is to be ready and prepared with the necessary tools at all times, and will NOT hesitate to use them if necessary and when pushed to the wall. Sorry to those good Malaysian Chinese but now I really can't differentiate..

    1. Get help from a doctor - fast. Your grip on reality and understanding of a mature democracy is gone. So much hatred, so little reason. The point of democracy is that voters can choose the reps they wish that they feel will help them best. Malays are and always will be a majority in the country, but if another party proposes a better plan for the future, one that gives you more benefit, why not back it?

      Delete
    2. Yeah, the voters can choose the reps they want but that doesn't explain why more than 90 percent of a single race unanimously voted solely in one direction? Wasn't it implied these people was up to something?
Afterwards it was obvious the Chinese wanted to topple the Malay-led government. They thought with the help of Pas and Anwar, the Malays votes would split big with the large chunk of it went to Pas and PKR. Umno then would be history. People don't realize these two Malay parties were just tools in Pakatan. They were used to weaken the Malays numerical cloud so that government change would be possible. But you know what, God still love this country. Umno came out even stronger, together with other component parties in BN.

  11. Can't blame the chinese they are made to survive by "any means" while the malays are too philosophic and actually gentle and apologetic.I have the feeling at the end of the day malays will lose and made to settle with the 60/40 cake. The malays won't be able to unite as they interpret the quran's sayings in multi ways (which is actually allowed in the religion) suiting more to their group interest i.e political needs. That make it easier for their opponent to manipulate them. The only way that they will be united and angry is when they lose the "gems" in their hand. At that juncture they would be very emotional hitting in all direction that would of course hurt a lot of people around them. Their gentle manner beside coming from malay culture is also actually a spill over of BN years or inter racial and interparty cooperation indoctrinated in them which the opposition are learning to do it now with much of drama.Malays are just like 2 cowboys in a death duel draw your gun battle and they like to draw their gun last thinking that they are good at it or thinking they are heroes or gentleman and that alway worked out but not next time around.
Their opponents are now having better "guns" and strategies and are not going to behave as gentleman as the malays do.Another aspect of the malays (soem say that is their strength some say its their weakness)that is, they can't be frank enough upfront with their feeling to people who seem to be good to them and that is part of their downfall.Malaysian are actually fragmented in thinking due to the school system where we are already discriminated in the earlier stage of our lives i.e being put in vernacular schools on pretext of wanting not to lose the culture and of course the language.Generation of school going children in the 50's and 60's who went to english schools are still able to speak their mother tongue today and still are able to practise their culture to day without losing their chineseness. Its utter nonsense that if you don't go to chinese or tamil schools you won't be chinese or indian anymore. And the problem with the malay they tend to practise one set of ritual in the national school. I would want to believe that we should let the other races have a small chapel or shrine for them to pray or to read their own doa but coming into class subjects are all in Bahasa Malaysia and english.
Stop all vernacular schools and let the children mix with each other from young. School should not be too malay but malaysian.Anyway malays are not the strong group anymore but they are so divided. STOP VERNACULAR SCHOOLS!!!!!

Saya setuju dengan Ellen Hassan. Stop vernacular schools.

Tiada negara lain benarkan sekolah venakular. Kenapa kita melayu dan UMNO bodoh membenarkannya?
