Saving face after the failed Arab Spring-wannabe stunt

Pakatan, or to be more precise PKR had yesterday filed a suit to annul the results of GE13.

Media which sided with Pakatan tried their best to make it seems as if the whole thing is the most important news in the whole wide world of Malaysia.

Words such as "a landmark case which will determine the future of Malaysia" and "Pakatan going for the jugular" were bandied out to give the impression how important the Pakatan's decision to sue for a reelection.

The truth however is that, the charade was all about saving the face of DS Anwar Ibrahim whose Arab Spring-wannabe Blackout 505 protest ended with a whimper following the failed rally at Padang Merbok, KL last month.

Anwar and his followers know that they can't muster continuous support even among their own party members to keep alive the notion that BN had cheated in the general election.

It is so because any reasonable man knows that the whole claim of cheating during the election was hogwash.

That was why they need to come out with some face saving maneuvers and what else is of better convenience other than a legal suit.

This is the usual tactic employed by Anwar and the gang in the event they can't refute BN's argument. Sue to silence, is indeed the usual Anwar's gambit even before GE13.

In this case, if any quarter, including their own party supporters questioned what happened to their Black-out 505 initiatives, they would turn around and said the matter is pending in court - end of argument.

Whether they win or lose the case later on doesn't really matter as the objective is to create the perception that they didn't lose their claims that BN had cheated in GE13.

Well, even if they lose the case, they will still turn around and say that the court had been under Umno's control and such.

Anyway, it should be kept in mind that this case will take a long time to be resolved and by the time it's done, the public will forget all about it, the same as it was with Anwar's Sept 16 claims about BN's wakil rakyat jumping ship back in 2008.

Another thing which should be noted is that, if Pakatan is really serious about wanting to annul GE13, then they should have Pas pulled out from the ongoing campaigning of the Kuala Besut by-election.

What is the point of them contesting that by-election if they are sure that BN will collude with the Election Commission to give victory to the coalition.

Do note, that the DAP has been very quiet over all these nonsense. Guan Eng and his gang are probably sniggering as they look from afar the antics of their less than intelligent Malay allies.

Oh ya, also do bear in mind that the cost of GE13 is over RM400 million. Don't tell me that we are going to spend that much again so soon just to satisfy Anwar's craving for power.

  1. I don't entirely agree with you, Annie. I think PR has other goals on its mind in its actions. It helps keep the issue in the media (mainstream and online)at minimal cost to its leaders and members. Apart from the cry that the court is biased if it loses, as you said, PR may gain points if the court's judgment, although against them, states on the public record that it recognizes flaws in the work of the EC or in the electoral system as a whole. For example if it picks up on other issues like malapportionment or gerrymandering (both exist, despite comments to the contrary). I agree that the case hasn't got a chance in hell of succeeding because we didn't have indelible ink (the core of the legal case for PR) in the last election and its presence, absence or reliability doesn't make the election result valid or invalid. Perhaps the case is the least of our problems as every quarter seeks to raise temperatures to provoke conflict between different faiths and races in the country. When does practicing my faith require me to stop others practicing theirs?

    2. Najib seems like a better leader I am an outsider you can see however for yourselves what the opposition have in store for your nation should they get in power.
Najib has plans but lacks the backbone of Dr Mahathir Mohammed he is better than the alternative note this Malaysia is better off than both Indonesia and Philippines and even Thailand a nation that has surpassed its neighbours (bar one) and getting better cannot be derailed just because you feel you are tired of one person.
If no real alternative then its better to choose the better of the two rather than jeopardise going down to your neighbours level.

    3. Najib still think he can lead malaysia better as a populist. he is also surrounded by neo-liberal adVICErs and CONsultants, who are bent on turning the country into a liberal state, whatever the consequence. On top of that, the wife still think she is No. 1 lady of the country.

This could be BN last term as government. The events taking place have similarity to animals preparing for a long winter. Sapu as much as they can while they still have the opportunity.

Majority of the people involved in GE are not in EC payroll. They comprises of government servant and others salaried person. Yes, there were paid allowances but do you have the numbers? If you , do not simply make up a number just to make your comment believable.

    8. Dear Anon 07:01

Since commenting in this blog for awhile now, I'm not in the habit of making up the numbers. You can always search online archives of newspapers or the Parliament Hansard to verify for yourselves.

From Bernama reporting of Q&A Parliament, first week July 2013: Excerpts...

"Shahidan Kassim said RM400 million was spent in GE13, which the opposition claimed was double than that of the 12th general election, while the number of voters increased by only 20 percent.

According to him, the amount included overtime payment of RM5.081 million, logistics, which included vehicle rentals, ICT equipment and lease line (RM98.465 million); service and token payment for workers (RM204.1 million) and other expenses (RM92.354 million)."

    9. Back in the 70s general election in Sarawak was held for two weeks, yes, two weeks. Not one day like we have today.

EC spent on logistics and personnel. They were hundreds of longboats rented including drivers and boatmen. It involved money. No where in the world election is free.

    10. There are 222 constituencies, 544 polling and 234,905 election workers.

payment for services and bonuses to election workers was RM200m. That works out to be RM850 per election workers. That rate commensurate with the market average for one day, one-off assignment.

Its a small compensation for for giving up your weekend, not forgetting all the abuses they get from rowdy Pakatan goons.

I do not agree with your statement "SPR allocated RM200mil for allowances and bonuses for themselves la..". These election workers are not on EC payroll. They are on a one off assignment.

Anyway, our sources among SPR election workers said they are not paid anywhere near that amount you provided. As stated in the report, the budget doubled but the voters only increased 20% since GE12.

    12. There is no published info but if you are in the service/hospitality industry that's the amount charged. The workers might not get the full amount as some cost are apportioned to overhead, such as insurance.

      Err, what overhead budget?
There's additional RM9mil for overtime and RM92mil for other expenses in the RM400mil SPR GE13 allocation!

Anyway, which service/hospitality industry work are you referring to?
Again, can you please provide me with any published info on "...market average for one day, one-off assignment."?

    2. 2008. The Opposition should have sorted out the vital 32 seats BEFORE and not after the 12th General Elections. After the Elections it meant the BN had the power again. JUST ONE EASY STEP.
    3. 2013. If the Opposition had called for a 100 day hunger strike and the 51% supporting votes to boycott the 13th General Elections, the BN would have won 100% of the seats with 49% of the votes and subjected to World condemnation. The Opposition would have strolled to Putrajaya.
