No guarantee on successor, says Malaysian PM Mahathir
"I will go one day and surely there will be a replacement. If the people want Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, they have the right to have Anwar.
"I cannot guarantee it… all I can do is I promise that after I resign, Anwar will take over, but it will be up to the people to choose," said the 93-year-old prime minister. The way I read it, Dr Mahathir was saying that ultimately, the people will decide whether Anwar will replace him as prime minister.
Actually, it's rather odd that he puts it that way.
That's because it's more or less putting the Dr Mahathir-Anwar succession plan out in the open without any definite end game.
For me, Dr Mahathir's message is that despite his agreement with Anwar, the rakyat still have a choice over the matter.
In what way? I don't know.
Maybe there will even be an early snap general election.......hey, anything can happen. With Dr Mahathir, everything is possible, okay.
After all, he said it's for the people to decide on Anwar when he steps down as PM about one and a half year from now as promised.
Come to think of it, that should be the way as Anwar will need a fresh mandate to lead the country.
GE14 was clearly a Dr Mahathir's show.
A huge bulk of Pakatan's votes were from his supporters, many coming from even hardcore Umno supporters.
Those votes were the true reason for the new ruling coalition's landslide victory.
And they are for Dr Mahathir, not Anwar.
So, if Anwar wants to prove that the rakyat do indeed want him to take over from Dr Mahathir as PM, then he should have his own show.
Well, at least that's how I see it.
Otherwise, it's just Anwar riding on Dr Mahathir's back to Putrajaya.
Seriously, how many of you all actually voted Pakatan because you want Anwar to become PM?
The PD by-election?
Well, I borrowed Khabib's answer for that one,
Haha...Annie is still at it.ReplyDelete
What Annie purposely omitted is that in the same sentence, Mahathir said that Anwar WILL SUCCEED HIM when he steps down.
Of course, Annie being the spin queen will never write that.
And she has to find distraction from all of Zahid's and UMNO's major major problems.
Looks like the gym and losing weight stuff didn't do Annie any good at all.

But I think Annie is so cute : )
Completely useless to her bosses, of course, but richly entertaining for the rest of us.....

They said they WILL abolish corruption and they have done a good job eradicating it.Delete
I totally agree with you. Once that handsome old man is out of the picture, for me personally, it will be a free for all. I might continue voting for PH or I might vote for BN. I voted for PH in the last general election because I believed in TUN and not PH. How both parties act in the next 5 years to the next election is going to determine who I vote for.ReplyDelete
Hahahaha Khabib. I guess Tun M play safe by following the rule of law. Yeahhh cliché. I know. The MPs will decide.ReplyDelete
Anyway our hometown Gan from MCA's headline made me blog again. LOL.
"Otherwise, it's just Anwar riding on Dr Mahathir's back to Putrajaya."
I disagree. Anwar is popular in his own right and so is Mahathir. The great thing is they are a team and PH comprises 4 parties with each party having its own strength.
Unlike BN which brand name is no longer appealing and going downhill fast. Even MCA wants out and the Indians are flocking to PKR.
Just look at the quality of UMNO leaders. My God! I can't believe what Zahid just said linking LBGT with the tsunami in Indonesia. What kind of leader is that? He should be speaking out against the ills and immorality of corruption instead of looking for scapegoat of a natural disaster.
"My God! I can't believe what Zahid just said linking LBGT with the tsunami in Indonesia. "Delete
Why didn't Zahid link LGBT with the fact that a corrupt kaki pukul Indon just got hit with 45 charges in court?
That must also be Allah's wrath.
"And they are for Dr Mahathir, not Anwar."ReplyDelete
If Dr.M was not going to be PM, me, my wife and 2 sons who is a first-time voters, would have stayed home and not gave ours votes to the PKR candidate.
//In what way? I don't know.//
Probably means that if the rakyat kicks up a stink about Anwar being PM, then things will become difficult for PH in GE15.
//Maybe there will even be an early snap general election//
No lah, not going to happen, OK?
PPBM could also suffer in any snap elections, I think.
//Come to think of it, that should be the way as Anwar will need a fresh mandate to lead the country.//
Maybe that should be the way, but that ain't gonna be the way.
When the incumbent PM resigns/steps down/dies, a new PM is appointed from his party or coalition.
Note how I worded that statement :)
I did not say that the DPM automatically steps up and fills the spot :)
I don't think there is any rule which says the DPM is automatically entitled to the position of PM.
//Otherwise, it's just Anwar riding on Dr Mahathir's back to Putrajaya.//
So what else is new? :)
But if we look at it another way, it was Anwar who started off the whole process of getting rid of UMNO.
So, perversely, it is Mahatir who rode into Putrajaya on Anwar's coat tails :)
//Seriously, how many of you all actually voted Pakatan because you want Anwar to be come PM?//
The main reason I voted Pakatan in GE14 was to see a change in government in Putrajaya.
It did not matter to me who, or even what, became PM.
I knew that Mahatir would be PM if Pakatan won and that, somewhere along the line, Anwar would become PM.
//The PD by-election?//
Eeerrrr... how else would Anwar become PM if he was not an MP?
If it was not PD then it would simply have had been another seat, OK?
Of cos we could always argue that Anwar could have contested in Sg Kandis or Balakong or Seri Setia and I am sure I would not have any good answers.
But it was PD and that was that.
And if anybody wanted to argue the cost of PD (approx RM3.6mil), let me remind folks that it is probably less then what it would cost for one of Rosmah's trips to Milan or New York.
Anyway, given what Mahatir has said, it seems that Anwar Ibrahim is now on track to become the 8th PM of Malaysia and I could not think of a better candidate at the moment :)
Of cos, Lim Kit Siang might be a more deserving candidate but I don't think LKS would be a better candidate, would he? :)
Voted PH but not Bang Non
Hee hee hee....ReplyDelete
Poor Macai Annie.
Nak spin tapi x pandai spin.
Anyway, some facts for you, Annie:
Anwar winning 71.3 percent of the popular vote in PD was higher than......
......Najib's 62 percent in Pekan
......Hadi's 59.3 percent in Marang
.......Zahid Hamidi's 51.4 percent in Bagan Datuk
.......Wee Ka Siong's 43.98 percent in Ayer Hitam.
And that ain't bullshit : )
He was more popular than all your bosses (OK lah, Hadi Ah Wang is only your proxy boss....)
Never mind, Annie.
Whatever Maths may say, we say....
Kipidap, dongibab : )
Hmmmm 71.30% popular votes?

Your tenure as a pro-Umgnok blogger is coming to an end, Annie, because Umgnok is coming to an end.
The 45 charges against Zahid are just the warm-up.
Don't mess with Tun.
The entire MTU will be behind bars, and Umgnok will be deregistered.
All your hard work to cover their corruption for the last 5 years, all wasted Annie.
Never mind, just post some K-drama video and we'll all be happy together, okay?
That's a good piece with serious personal views, Annie. Keep it up in that manner. Anwar has no leadership quality and must not be pm. Private political agrrement cannot bind the rakyat, otherwise what are elections for? Anyway, anwar can never come out with his own show, he only has islamic things. Therefore, he will scheme behind and create instability. This time, he will not succeed, for the good foundation has been laid by the good Doc Mahathir.ReplyDelete
Again, keep it up.
i voted pakatan n i dun wan mahathir to be pm. he shd retire by now or the most is 2 years as promised.ReplyDelete
It doesn't really matter as long as you tie-up all the UMNO thugs in court for the next 5 years. Plenty of time to sort things out.ReplyDelete
This is just a storm in a teacup.
And please fire that moronic Education Minister .... typical useless monkey.
Tun M's second stint as PM is derived from the mandate of the rakyat including BN/UMNO supporters/voters. So whoever his successor is, he needs a fresh mandate to lead the country based on the latest political landscape. Respect must be earned. So is his own mandate. This you pointed out rightly.ReplyDelete
Your own query as to how "the rakyat still have a choice over the matter I.e. the succession despite the handover agreement" indicates that there are more things to come. It is not a done deal yet.
Your analysis is enlightening. Do post for more should you have further information or facts. Keep it up.

Anwar winning the popular vote of 71.3% in PD is a remarkable achievement and is testament that he enjoys vast support from all races and segments of society.ReplyDelete
What is even more phenomenal is this victory of 71.3% popular votes is achieved with only 58% voter turnout.
Najib should be ashamed of himself in only getting 62% popular votes despite a 83% voter turnout in Pekan.
Anwar has earned his stripes well to be the next in line for the premiership post.
"Come to think of it, that should be the way as Anwar will need a fresh mandate to lead the country"

I will vote PH as long as PKR, Amanah and DAP make the coalition. Undeniably, Anwar is one of the reasons too.
Annie is still in great despair. If you tend to hold a grudge and you don't seem to let it go it served you right, I suppose.
Tell us which of your PM materials entrusted to put themselves constesting out of their safety zone constituency during elections as what Anwar did.
Tun M? Najib? Zahid? Hadi Awang?
Anwar had won handsomely in Permatang Pauh and Port Dickson. Kajang too if it was permissible for him to contest but being denied by Najib's regime. Kajang also
won tremendeously by Wan Azizah, a sign people will still choose him despite all the defamations and sabotage strewn from every corner of his political nemesis.
I think Annie has some kind of love and hate for Anwar :)

If I were you, those allegations I will take with a pinch of salt.
With Tun M clarification to uphold rule of law..Ezam or anybody could make a report to PDRM or MACC if there are proofs of Anwar's misconduct, power abuse or graft involving conflict of interest. As simple as that.
Perhaps, in the era of internet, borderless, Tun also realizes he won't be survived as he was 22years ago where everything can be swept under the carpet. Thats why PH put a limit PM for 2 terms only. It will never be easy for any of our future PMs.
In fact, in Msia baru we have a great line ups of opposition pairing Umno & Pas. Their leaders are well known and capable of anything. Some of them are robbers, murderer, rapist, propagator race & religion for political tools and what not . I am certain they wouldn't shut their eyes and mouth when Anwar or leaders from PH done anything wrong similar to them, obviously.
Therefore, if you notice lately, we also have a magnifying glass blogger named Annie. She can easily sees and smells something fishy even tiny little things PH does. But she rather keeping mum when Msians were robbed billions and previous regime cheering up hatred by playing race card and religion constantly to divide and instigated the people.
By avoiding being bigots of any political party or individuals, we shall be calm and pleased as more disclosures will burst out when nation under PH approaching new free media transparency, good governance and freedom of speech. Don't you think so, Cik Minah? :)
Here are some good news for us to ponder at the moment..heheheDelete
Former Treasury secretary-general Irwan Serigar Abdullah arrived at the MACC building in a black Myvi. He was detained overnight and is expected to be charged today with several criminal breach of trust cases, pertaining to 1MDB's dealings with Abu Dhabi's International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC), among others. Irwan earned a total of RM6,811,763 from January 2011 to June 2018, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng told the Dewan Rakyat.
Also expected to be charged is former government spy chief Hasanah Abdul Hamid, who is set to face several criminal breach of trust charges.
Meanwhile, a police source told that Rosmah Mansor, the wife of former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, and her sons Norashman and Riza Aziz, are set to be questioned by the police on Friday. Word is that they will be grilled on the 1MDB scandal. A court document revealed the exact stake two 1MDB subsidiaries have on superyacht Equanimity.

Mr.Anon 12.55.....at the moment Anwar is not the PM yet. After all, he and his doter merely jetting around, belum ada lagi kes membalas budi......so, macam mana nak buat tuduhan?
My view is based on Anwar's response to SPR and BERSIH's comments regarding Anwar's PD campaign using government's facilities..."Cukup-cukuplah tu..." or " Enof is enof..." Anwar snapped off and BERSIH and SPR terus senyap.
So, we just have to wait and see........after all, a leapord has never change its' spot.

Once upon a time, there were private citizens who used government assets to travel to New York, Milan, Paris, etc etc on their own private business like shopping, attending fashion shows and so forth.

//What is even more phenomenal is this victory of 71.3% popular votes is achieved with only 58% voter turnout.
Najib should be ashamed of himself in only getting 62% popular votes despite a 83% voter turnout in Pekan.//
With all due respect, I don't think that is how those stats work out.
The lower the voter turnout, the easier it is to get a big outcome.
The bigger the voter turnout, the harder it is to get a big outcome.
Here is an example.
Let's say there are 100 voters.
Thru the magic of statistics, we happen to know that exactly 50 of those voters will vote Candidate A and 50 of those voters will vote Candidate B.
Also thru the magic of statistics, everything I say following is perfectly legitimate.
If only one voter turned up to vote, somebody is going to win 100% of the vote. See? Low turnout, high voter share.
If 9 voters for Candidate A turned up and only 1 voter for Candidate B turned up, then Candidate A will win 90% of the vote.
If 16 voters for Candidate A turned up and 4 voters for Candidate B turned up, then Candidate A will win 80% of the vote.
And so forth and so forth... 70/30, 60/40 until we get to 50% for each candidate.
You can see that as you increase the number of voters, you will see how the voter share for Candidate A will fall to 50% (as we already know 50% is the best possible via the magic of statistics)
Pls pls pls note that the above is merely an example using a 50/50 split.
Other more interesting scenarios can be constructed using different splits, say 60/40 or 70/30 or 80/20.
E.g. in a 70/30 split, Candidate B has only 30 voters and 28 turn up, while Candidate A only has 7 voters turn up.
Then candidate B will win a whopping 80% of the voter share because a lower voter turn out.
The main thing I am trying to explain is that a low turnout of voters can make it easier to bias results towards one candidate, making that candidate look wonderful, eg in the case of of that 70/30 split where Candidate B looks great but is really shit.
So, do not sneer at Najib's 62% voter share because he had a bigger voter turnout - we already know it from the above that it is more difficult to get a bigger voter share with a bigger voter turnout.
Also, do not fall into the trap of those who crow about how fantastic Anwar has done in PD.
Do not not misunderstand me here, I am not rubbishing Anwar's win in PD, OK?
Yes, Anwar did very well but that is because of a low voter turnout and fortunately for Anwar, most of those who did turn up, voted for him.
The truth is that for the PD by elections, we do not really know how the missing 42% would have voted.
42% is a BIG chunk of missing voters.
All I am saying is, please be careful of people who tell you how wonderful some particular figures look because they do not always tell you everything.
We, the rakyat, should NEVER trust ANY politicans EVER AGAIN, be they from Pakatan or BN or wherever.
We must learn to think and question EVERYTHING they say or do.
Only then can we, the rakyat, assert our authority over politicians and not have them walk all over us like before.
//if Anwar & family went by private bullock cart, the news would be splashed all over the papaers as well as social medias//
I wonder how many of us here have ever seen a bullock cart on Malaysian roads :)

//Bullock cart don't cost so much compred to private jet//
Solid gold bullock cart with platinum lacework and diamond-encrusted wheel rims, and rubies, emeralds and sapphires to decorate the bullock pulling the cart???
Might cost more than a private jet :)
//private jet belong to some busniess tycoon especially if the tycoon operates illegal casinos.//
