Not been well, but now a bit okay again.
A few interesting things happened but I think others had written quite a lot about them and furthermore, it's a bit late for me to do so too now.
So, I better write about something else.
Well, I received this from a friend yesterday,
Do note that the figures are comparison between those from the second half of last year and those from the second half of 2012, which was just before the last general election.
It may be worse now.
The figures came with this story by Malaysian Insight
BN in trouble with falling newspaper circulation, says editor
Having read the story, however, I think the headline is wrong and should instead be written like this,
"Newspapers in trouble with falling circulation, can't help BN much".
I think Malaysian Insight tried too hard to spin the story.
Whatever it is, if you look at the figures carefully, the newspapers under Media Prima suffered worse than the others.
The Chinese newspaper Sin Chew Daily is the one least affected by the drop in circulation.
The Star, compared to its direct rival NST of Media Prima, is not doing so horribly bad either.
Some may argue that all this was due to people switching to online news sources.
Sure, but if you look at the ranking of online media, the story is still the same.
For instance, just compare the ranking of Star Online and NST Online. One is there at the top with the others while the other one is not doing so well.
If you asked me, I would have to say that it's because newspapers of Media Prima were too tied up by what the journalists there themselves described as "wahyu dari atas".
And most of their bosses have no balls to say no to these "instructions from above" even if they are so stupid that publishing them only further erode their newspapers' credibility.
Nobody wants to read newspapers with no credibility, okay.
The last time someone tried to do the right thing at Media Prima was when I wrote these,
It didn't work out and the guy who tried to do that right thing just moved on and now trying his best instead to help people buy affordable houses, which I think is very good of him.
Certain things simply can't be helped.
Anyway, the Malaysian Insight story quoted KarangKraft executive editorial adviser Abdul Jalil Ali, whom I agree with on this point,
"I’ve said it before to the authorities; you cannot block news in this day and age any more.
"What they should do instead is be clever when explaining and answering to all news."But what to do, the people who were given control of these newspapers seemed incapable of being clever.
I don't think they even tried hard enough.
All they seemed to care about is keeping their well paying job and getting Datukship or something.
I don't think they even care what happened to the newspapers they work for.
And, let's not even talk about the loftier goals of journalism, okay.
Well, I have been bitching about this since long ago.
I wrote this on March 5 2014,
Of course nothing happened after I wrote that as mine is just an insignificant anonymous blog.
And the stupidity continues.
Pembaca pro bn juga mengalih kepada media internet dan masih setia menyokong. Bagaimanapun sedikit demi sedikit mula menyokong pembangkang kerana kerajaan tidak dapat mengurus jawapan dengan baik.ReplyDelete
Untuk suratkhabar kembali berperanan seperti dulu, keadilan pemberitaan perlu diujudkan.
Apapun pengeluaran surat khabar perlu diteruskan supaya industri surat khabar lama dapat diteruskan

I understand what "news" is but what is this thing you call "paper"? :)
Nowadays, im living in a 700sqft flats. Not much room for pile up old newspaper. (Store room so small.. huhu)
Plus, now recycle uncle not much like 3 years ago. Now, i have to carry on my own for ermm rm1.50(?) per jengkal to recycle centre.
So, a pocket size information just enough lah.
Just my thought thou.

All those papers are reek of swamp.ReplyDelete
Wahyu dari atas notwithstanding, consumer's preferences are aldo changing. I've also stopped buying any newspaper. Waste reduction - saves some trees.ReplyDelete

Che Minah, the dwindling newspapers circulation got nothing to do with whether the newspapers are pro government or anti government.Delete
I believe anti government newspapers such as Harakah,Suara Keadilan and the Rocket also suffer the same fate.
I still buy Utusan Malaysia since my wife is a bit of old school. She prefers to read the printed version. It is also a kind of nostalgic when you read Utusan since I grew up with it from my secondary school days.It is like watching a black and white P.Ramlee movie even though we have so many choices of modern movies
How true, Prof Kangkung.Delete
My sister, used to be a Wanita Umno stalwart,
is still buying Utusan because her bibik likes
to read it.So, whenever I visit her, I too
read Utusan but only on HIBURAN.
newsprint is only a small part of their media conglomerate, they would not lose sleep over itReplyDelete
bringing credible news to the masses wasn't their true intentions otherwise they'd be set up similar to el Jazeera, cnn or the bbc where they employ real journalist not party propagandists and operatives
this is purely a money generating enterprise for cronies and party interest
Nak buat...kasi buat betul2,jgn nk tipu rakyat Selangor..jika dh janji baik tunaikan biar pun lambat sedikit..bg kami ape yg ko ckp arini..kami tggu esok ape yg boleh dpt...tapi bab pangkah tu kami taknak janji...sebab ko punye janji pun ssh nk tunaikan....ReplyDelete

Pertama nya paper ada..news tak ada.ReplyDelete
Akhir nya dia jumpa tukun cash is king.

Newspaper is a thing of the past.
Begin to accept it. Find other trades.

These so-called smart kids are not that smart.Look what happened to those university students like Safwan Anang, the guy who turned the police car (I can't even remember his name) and many others.Farid or something.Delete
Where are they now?
Itu yang org kata cerdik tak boleh nak diikut bodoh tak boleh nak diajar.
Budak syed Saddiq ni is a publicity crazy guy.He can always defer his study.(I guess that what he did).cuma dia hide that fact just to show that he made a very big sacrifice.
We will see where he is 5 years down the road.
I agree with U, Prof Kangkong.Delete
Saddiq should put 'study' as his top priority.
For sure, we don't want our future Prime
Minister to be like our present one, without
a degree. Nanti dia fikir, CASH IS ALWAYS THE
KING,sampai semua orang, termasuk Presiden
Amerika, dia nak beli.
dear prof, ada sorang Perdana Menteri entah dari negara mana, lagi gila publicity (gila nak gelemer) sampai durianpun nak credit kat dia. BTW, Saddiq ini hensem la sikit, tak nampak mcm bangla mcm sorang tu..Delete
Annie. On Syed Saddiq. Some commenters regretting his decision. Let me salute him. He has completed his first degree well. Unlike some ignoramus(es) who are being put on high pedestals by their PhD followers. If education means Masters and PhDs then I question the PhDs and Masters who are educating the Bachelors. Post graduate education is best experienced when one has gone through the nitty gritty real industry of life. After which one understands better real life issues in context with theory. Speaking from experience of course.Delete
Be well Saddiq. Our doa for you. May Allah Ta'ala protect you from the bad do'a of the misguided. Be assured that the Masters, PhDs and beyond can wait. Allahu musta'an.
Aii yaa ,kalau sulat kabar semua sutak habit , apa macam mau bungkus itu nasi lemak maa aa ?.
Per Bullshit Nasional RPK, is there any evidence of RM1 billion in LKS bank account similar to RM2.6 billion in MO1 bank account??? So nobody will read these Bullshit Nasional lies & shits...ReplyDelete

That just about sums up what newspaper is all about.
He who controls the media, controls the minds of the masses.
And this is the truth in most countries, democratic or not.
However in our beloved country things have gotten from bad to worse. It is used as a key propaganda tool to sway support
for a regime bereft of ideas.
They determine what needs to be fed to our inquisitive minds and the arrival of social media has greatly freed us from their clutches. And it has made them very worrisome
I would celebrate the day these print organs die a painful and lonely death. The damages they have done to our thriving society is irreversible and the sooner they die the better it would be.Saves the planet and environment as well.
To see the fall of NST from such lofty heights of yesteryear
is sad indeed. It was a newspaper that I grew up with.I can still remember reading my first Straits Times on the day when Cassius Clay (later to become Muhammad Ali) beating Sonny Liston to grab his first world boxing title. It was news all over the world and ever since that day, the Straits Times helped me immensely to improve my English speaking and writing skills. It was the same with Utusan Malaysia which helped me tremendously to pull through my MCE Bahasa Kebangsaan papers. They wrote facts with impeccable bahasa tanah air.No baku,no borrowing of English words, no alien Arabic or Javanese words.Just bahasa murni as was espoused by the then pristine Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka.
Those were the days.Simple and straight forward.Just like
the song Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynrd (pronounced Lee-nerd Skin-nerd) live at Florida Theatre 2015.
yea…amazing tat d amount of sharing always just fits d old days press. as u said….d need in its news, d descriptive power, d originality, d accuracy….literary style…mind n moral of d people as base as itself. mmmmph…I can imaging tat striking old days when people live with it.Delete
today as people r more learned ….n younger i think we want something more intelligent, precise, more forcible…striking…n d most something liberal to ve our attention. or we’d not read it or cared wat d rhetorical media'd to say about anything. as my father lambasted them……d lowly conspiratorial!
anyway...i think d market has corrected their market share.
So glad to see that Nazi Utusan bleeding money.ReplyDelete

-Talking about getting recognition and appreciation Annie, I'm sorta surprised the like of Prof. Dr. Hatta Azad Khan and Aziz M. Osman haven't got Datukship or any award of that sort. I was like these guys are like the 'godfather' of Malaysia's cultural arts scene especially when it comes theatre and cinema.
FYI Prof. Hatta Azad Khan is the man behind that famous movie Mat Som produced in the early 90s. Mat Som is an adaptatation of Datuk Lat's most iconic graphic novel. This guy too is the brain behind the longest running sitcom on Malaysian TV, Pi Mai-Pi Mai Tang Tu. And Aziz M. Osman. Do you need an introduction?
Fenomena, Femina, Fantasi. Leftenan Adnan, XX-Ray, Puteri Impian and a string of other films to his name. It seems to me that these guys haven't got recognition they deserve after doing so much to the industry.
These guys had toiled their sweats and tears ever since their youthful days. And their massive contribution to Malaysian arts and culture scenes has no rival and unparalled in current contemporaries. Royal recognition is long overdue.
woow…wait a minute! d godfather of msian theatre n movie? how cud i miss tat? I dunno tat guys. wat i know our movie n drama r bad rap, likening those sickening comedy shows on our tv. now their oddity n silliness ve taken big time here. they tend to creep into our culture. no wonder more people don’t take things too seriously n usually able to joke around. n d scary part is if they were to get datukship for tat!Delete
Free falling as the late Tom Petty sang. Falling circulation aside, RIP Tom.ReplyDelete

Have you got the statistics on the viewership of TV3 Buletin Utama from 2012 to now?
I am keen to know whether the viewership has declined since the last GE. I no longer watch the first half of the news program, and only watch the Sports segment because it is better than Astro Awani. I no longer can stand the super duper lopsided political coverage by the TV3. I do pity the newscasters that have to spew out rubbish since they are paid to do so.
