Remembering how Najib became PM and Muhyiddin his deputy

There have been quite some discussions on how DS Najib Razak took over the premiership from Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The debate was triggered by a statement by Umno deputy president TS Muhyiddin Yassin two days ago that,

I was Najib's kingmaker, and I don't regret it

I would therefore like to recall what I remember about the whole thing.

First there was that rebellion against Abdullah which started not long after Barisan Nasional's landslide victory in the 2004 general election.

Not unlike the current rebellion against Najib, former PM Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the anchor of those who wanted Abdullah to be replaced.

The main reason for the rebellion was unhappiness over the conduct of Abdullah and his people, especially the so-called "fourth floor boys" in managing the country.

Most of the current prominent bloggers are among the rebels back then.

The rebellion's ultimate effect was the dismal BN's performance in the March 2008 general election.

The ruling coalition lost Penang, Kedah, Perak, Selangor and most parliamentary seats in the Federal Territory while Kelantan remained in opposition's hand.

BN also suffered many loses in other states and it lost the two third majority in parliament.

Pressure from within Umno for Abdullah to step down mount right after the election.

Muhyiddin, who was known to be one of Abdullah's people before the election was very vocal from the start.

Najib on the other hand was more discreet.

I remember very well asking point blank a close aide of Najib who is my friend when his boss is going to make his move.

We were having a seafood dinner in Tanjung Lumpur, Kuantan at that time, just a week or two after the election.

He told me that it's not Najib's style to be abrasive in demanding a sitting premier to resign.

Things however came to a head at the first meeting between Abdullah and a state liaison committee after the election.

It was the Johor liaison committee and the date was April 11, 2008.

The rebels were very excited on that day.

This is the posting by Big Dog about the meeting;

PM 'Flip-Flop' Abdullah bertemu UMNO Johor hari ini

If you click on the link to the Big Dog's posting you will notice that the report was not focused on what transpired during the press conference held by Abdullah and  Johor Umno leaders after the meeting.

It's more on what Big Dog found out from his sources who were present during the meeting and news reports quoting Muhyiddin and individual Johor Umno leaders.

That's because the actual press conference did not mention anything about Johor Umno forcing Abdullah to step down.

Nonetheless, Big Dog's report was mostly correct.

The Johor Umno leaders actually did told Abdullah that the grassroots wanted him to step down and he needed to present them with a timetable of the transition plan.

The Johor Umno leaders, led by the then state liaison chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman however decided that what had been conveyed to Abdullah in the meeting should not be made public in order not to shame the party president who is also the prime minister.

It's adab Melayu (Malays' etiquette) not to humiliate a leader.

Thus the rather mundane press conference after the meeting.

This was reflected by what current Johor Umno liaison committee chairman DS Mohd Khaled Nordin told Bernama that night (Please refer to Big Dog's post).

Excerpts:

The most direct to the point statement which revealed that Abdullah needed to step down came from Muhyiddin, who called for a separate press conference after the meeting (Please refer to Big Dog's post).

Excerpts:

Muhyiddin was at that time hailed as a hero by those who wanted Abdullah to step down.

Unknown to many, Muhyiddin actually did not say anything during the meeting.

As reported by Big Dog, he was among the first to leave the meeting.

What had transpired at that meeting actually prompted Abdullah to ignore the urging of his people for him to hang on to power.

He had instead called for a meeting with national security chiefs throughout the country to get an honest feedback about sentiments on the ground.

The response that Abdullah got was that the majority of people, including those within Umno wanted him to step down.

Thus on July 10, 2008, Abdullah for the first time announced that he would step down by June the next year.

Nonetheless, the pressure for him to step down earlier than that deadline continues. The rebels simply can't wait for him to go.

An important incident happened in September that year.

It was Ramadhan and there was a breaking of fast function at the Saujana, the official residence of Johor menteri besar in JB.

I was present there that evening.

Najib was accompanied by his wife DS Rosmah Mansor to the function.

Muhyiddin was also there. I can't remember if his wife was present.

Muhyiddin was then the Minister of International Trade and Industry.

He was promoted to that portfolio from his previous post of Agriculture Minister by Abdullah, causing much distress to his predecessor TS Rafidah Aziz, who was reduced to be a backbencher in parliament.

It was said that Rafidah never forgive Abdullah for what happened.

Those who were present at the breaking of fast function had tea after they completed the prayers that evening.

It was then discussed on how to expedite the departure of Abdullah from the prime minister office.

The reason being that Umno and Barisan Nasional needed as much time as possible to heal their wounds from the disastrous  2008 general election.

It was felt that the longer Abdullah stays as PM, the more difficult it would be for BN to win the next general election.

A decision was then made for Najib and Muhyiddin to tag team in order to achieve the desired result.

It was said that Muhyiddin had accepted the fact that he should be the DPM and Najib the PM because he stands little chance to defeat Najib in a party election.

Najib's networking among the division leaders and grassroots support was stronger than Muhyiddin's.

The final agreement between Najib and Muhyiddin on their decision to tag-team in hastening Abdullah's departure was sealed onboard the plane taking them back to Kuala Lumpur after the breaking of fast function at Saujana that night.

Muhyiddin had hitched a ride on the plane used by Najib, who was then the deputy prime minister.

Present onboard the plane when the deal between the two was made was Najib's wife DS Rosmah Mansor.

If you don't believe what I wrote about the incident, please ask Rosmah, okay.

Anyway, the Najib-Muhyiddin tag-team went well and Abdullah stepped down as prime minister on April 3, 2009, almost two months before the actual deadline initially given by him.

Najib took over the premiership almost exactly a year after that fateful meeting between Abdullah and the Johor Umno liaison committee which prompted the fifth prime minister to make an honest assessment of his leadership for the good of the country.

  1. Annie,

Pak Lah was indeed a man of principle.....when he knew that the odds are stacked against him......and in keeping with his hadari belief....quit gracefully.
He did not claim himself a warrior or pirate. He did not even indulge in a war of words with his enemy at that time which was TDM.
Neither did he allow billions to be parked in his personal account. His late wife dedicated herself to promoting sarung kebaya and never once made a misstep in her behaviour and conduct.
Pak Lah never called anyone bangsat and was not known to use harsh words.
His only flaw was in indulging himself in taking too many naps and failing to curb his opportunistic and cunning son in law.

Ah Jib ? The less said the better. Muhiddin..............well he missed the bus and now it is too late for him. Komedi has also started his destructive ways to make sure Muhiddin is reduced to a has been.

Real interesting times await UMNO......and could end up like...Congress of India or Golkar of Indonesia or LDP of Japan or Awami of Pakistan.

    1. I agree with you. The too many naps was because he fell in love with you know who and did not sleep well at night. He had the blessing of his terminally ill wife to marry the then Officer in charge of the PM Residence.

All the same, he deserves good wishes in his retirement days though he cannot escape public recrimination to continue even in history. Must take it as his past occupational hazard.

One US politician said on TV all leading political personalities the world over don't read or bother much what is said or written against them. Therein lies the problem of getting Najib to resign.

The longer the incubation period, the worse for UMNO and the Malays, bro. The DAP fellas have been exploiting like hell. And Anwarul PKR also clapping hands getting 2 notable UMNO converts.

    3. YM Raja Petras take is correct, Sdr Anon 13:30
on the current situation, although not on how Tun Pak 'Lah was toppled above.

It is not what we outsiders want but the 191 UMNO division chiefs and the UMNO Supreme council members will stick with DS Mohd Najib. Ousting him without a solid post-Najib plan will trigger big big problems, at least until after GE-14.

They do not understand why outsiders including Tun Dr M should interfere with the internal UMNO processes to oust the current party leadership.

  6. If only Tun Dol had ruled properly and not let the 4th Floor boys take over, things would not have become so messy now. TDM would not have undermined his administration and the public would not have become so used to condemning the gomen like nobody's business as happens now.

And we need to watch the then 4th Floor Gang Leader, the current UMNO Youth Chief Khairy. Wanting to be PM by 40 and it's about the time now. He could play a role in stabilising the situation - UMNO Youth had always played a significant check-and-balance role but he himself does not appear to have balance in his statements and Youth position on important issues.

Khairy could be a real leader if he had spoken up on 1MDB, the RM2.6 billion, the "hidden hands" etc. He could be waiting in the winds and swoop in when the storm is unmanageable to others. If Muhyiddin, the Deputy President, has lost his chances, the way is open to the Vice Presidents and Khairy is one by virtue nof being the UMNO Chief.

It may be a far-fetched idea of Khairy being a candidate to replace Najib now but I'm saying it more as a way of saying watch, don't let him be.

Being Deputy President of UMNO, it's only natural that he fills in when the post is vacated. Only question is whether the "hidden hands" (they are all over the places those blokes (the RD guy may oppose use of this word again, hehe) would try to get him out via the Disciplinary Committee etc.

That's why Muhyiddin has been sounding somewhat conciliatory and "kingmakerly" in the recent past. That should remind Najib not to try and have him removed from the Deputy Pesidency and understandable to fair-minded UMNO members who should clamour for his retention as Deputy President.

And ask the Disciplinary Committee to avoid mistakes again. Like finding Khairy Jamaluddin guilty of money politics but did not ban him from contesting at the party elections after that, like it did Isa Samad etc,

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "While I was at Mecca the roof of my house was opened and Gabriel descended, opened my chest, and washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a golden tray full of wisdom and faith and having poured its contents into my chest, he closed it. Then he took my hand and ascended with me to the nearest heaven, when I reached the nearest heaven, Gabriel said to the gatekeeper of the heaven, 'Open (the gate).' The gatekeeper asked, 'Who is it?' Gabriel answered: 'Gabriel.' He asked, 'Is there anyone with you?' Gabriel replied, 'Yes, Muhammad I is with me.' He asked, 'Has he been called?' Gabriel said, 'Yes.' So the gate was opened and we went over the nearest heaven and there we saw a man sitting with some people on his right and some on his left. When he looked towards his right, he laughed and when he looked toward his left he wept. Then he said, 'Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious son.' I asked Gabriel, 'Who is he?' He replied, 'He is Adam and the people on his right and left are the souls of his offspring. Those on his right are the people of Paradise and those on his left are the people of Hell and when he looks towards his right he laughs and when he looks towards his left he weeps.'

Anas said: "Abu Dhar added that the Prophet (ﷺ) met Adam, Idris, Moses, Jesus and Abraham, he (Abu Dhar) did not mention on which heaven they were but he mentioned that he (the Prophet) met Adam on the nearest heaven and Abraham on the sixth heaven. Anas said, "When Gabriel along with the Prophet (saw) passed by Idris, the latter said, 'Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious brother.' The Prophet (saw) asked, 'Who is he?' Gabriel replied, 'He is Idris." The Prophet (saw) added, "I passed by Moses and he said, 'Welcome! O pious Prophet and pious brother.' I asked Gabriel, 'Who is he?' Gabriel replied, 'He is Moses.' Then I passed by Jesus and he said, 'Welcome! O pious brother and pious Prophet.' I asked, 'Who is he?' Gabriel replied, 'He is Jesus. Then I passed by Abraham and he said, 'Welcome! 5. Ibn Hazm and Anas bin Malik said: The Prophet (saw) said, "Then Allah enjoined fifty prayers on my followers when I returned with this order of Allah, I passed by Moses who asked me, 'What has Allah enjoined on your followers?' I replied, 'He has enjoined fifty prayers on them.' Moses said, 'Go back to your Lord (and appeal for reduction) because your followers will not be able to bear it.' (So I went back to Allah and submitted for a dispensation) and He reduced it to half. When I passed by Moses again and informed him about it, he said, 'Go back to your Lord as your followers will not be able to bear it.' So I returned to Allah and requested for further reduction and half of it was reduced. I again passed by Moses and he said to me: 'Return to your Lord, for your followers will not be able to bear it. So I returned to Allah and He said, 'These are five prayers and they are all (equal to) fifty (in reward) for My Word does not change.' I returned to Moses and he told me to go back once again. I replied, 'Now I feel embarassed of entreating my Lord again.' Then Gabriel took me till we '' reached Sidrat-il-Muntaha (the Heavenly Lote Tree before the Divine Throne) which was shrouded in colors indescribable. Then I was admitted into Paradise where I found beautiful pavilions and curtains of pearls, and the soil was of fragrant musk."

  11. It's generally agreed that the power of the blogs was very significant in removing Abdullah from power in 2009. Abdullah gomen had taken over financial control of and thrown out NST Group Chief Editor Kadir Jassin. NST, MM etc had ceased publishing Tun Dr Mahathir's statements. TDM started blogging, his "gang" followed suit and blogging became a phenomena in this country.

Since then, social media or Facebook and Tweeters came on the scene. But the usually 1-2 lines comments do not have much impact, especially when the DAP Red Beans and their kind took to it - it's their habit of making 1-2 lines accusations without justification or explanation anyway. Nobody cared about what they say except themselves.

That's why the "hidden hands" have taken a lot of interest in blogs now. A lot being said of bayar membayar, ada yang kata "prepaid blogs" whatever that means. But I don't think Annie's is.

  13. To be fair to Najib and everyone else, we have to look at the whole picture.Politics is very similar to a game of soccer. It is a team work. When a striker scores a goal most likely he gets a good pass from his team mates. If he scores from a penalty spot, most likely his team mate was fouled by an opponent.
We as political observers tend to take sides. We either for Najib or against Muhyiddin. There is only one person can be chosen as a captain of the team. It does not mean other players are not important. Only the coach can decide who is going to play and who is going to sit on the bench. In the political analogy the coach are the voters.

Malang nya dia Al Juburi tarak credibility. Kita masih nak harapkan Muhyiddin, TDM dsb nya dapatkan UMNO gantikan Ajib. Mana tau bila, the Lord works in mysterious ways, they said of the Christian God. The same of the Muslim God.

  16. "The most direct to the point statement which revealed that Abdullah needed to step down came from Muhyiddin, who called for a separate press conference after the meeting (Please refer to Big Dog's post)."

If true, good for Muhyiddin. The more reason Najib should not be an ungrateful ingrate like the DAP buggers and not agree to any suggestion to get the UMNO Disciplinary Committee or others remove Muhyiddin from the Deputy President post.

But Big Dog will stand by that now? The blog been said to be suddenly so pro-Najib now that cannot tolerate anything said against Najib.

  17. Annie said, It's adab Melayu (Malays' etiquette) not to humiliate a leader.

At what level? DPM also a leader. No 2 leader in the country. Dropping him from cabinet for no valid reason not tak beradab? Just because No. 2 asking for transparency on 1MDB and RM2.6 billion?

  18. Muhyiddin was at that time hailed as a hero by those who wanted Abdullah to step down.

He is also a hero to those who wanted Najib to step down. The only difference is this time as DPM he is seen as the interested party to Najib's post. And Najib main kasar. Hidden hands worked here and there and he dropped Muhyiddin from the cabinet.

But no reason for Najib to feel secure. The Special Task Force on 1MDB and the RM2..6 billion is still on. New AG cannot now eat his words that it has not been disbanded. People are awaiting his calling for a meeting as the MACC Commissioner and the IGP has sounded a week ago,

  19. Masalah Najib akan terus meleret dan desakan transparency Muhyiddin berbangkit selagi dia tak saman SR, WSJ atau NYT. Tadi dia kata

No go on WSJ suit without confirmation on use of US free speech shield ... (Malay Mail Online)
