A good old doctor

Managing that last posting about the good doctor from Malacca makes me feel like posting this rather old documentary by History Channel.

To remind myself of who is actually this old doctor, who some now labelled as a traitor to his religion, race and country.

53 comments:

  1. 1. I used to think he was harsh, crony-ish etc etc when he was in power for 22 years. A few years of Tun Dol, I thought of him much better. A few years of Najib, I think he was and is a hero

    2. I now wish he could be back leading this country again. At 90, he is agile mentally and physically and definitely can lead the country again.

    3. He has always talked of "menjaga and menaikkan maruah Bangsa Melayu" and "negara Malaysia". Melayu, the community that has been largely ignored by the British colonial masters, that forms the majority in this country but that had a Special Position ("since day one" as recorded in the British Hansard) which even the British colonial masters acknowledged, and had it enshrined in the Constitution. He has admitted to having 25% Indian blood, but he feels and has been showing he is a Malay more than very many who claim to be Malays

    4. He protected and promoted the rights and interests of the Malays but he also did the same to the rights and interests of the other communities. Those "cronies" worked with the Malays in carrying out projects. His detractors called his Malay "cronies" rent-seekers but the Chinese were mostly the ones carrying out the major "privatisation" projects and got benefits as much as, and in some instances, even more than the Malay cronies.

    5. He was a no-nonsense PM and is a no-nonsense ex-PM. Lim Kit Siang and the likes of him got ISA-ed, there was decorum and decency in the manner people conducted themselves during his time, he even had the Constitution amended to define the responsibilities of members of the Royal Family regarding personal or non-official matters.

More can be said but the PMO cai would complain against "komen berjela jela", the stupid fellow.

    1. Dear Anon 19:47,

      In retort to your points:-

      1) Yes, agree he was 'harsh' ala a 'firm-Father', that's all..

      2) Abso-effing-lutely agree..

      3) He had admitted years ago to being ultra-Malay. Even admitted to being a 'failure to uplift the Economic-prowess etc' of the Malays, then. (In the 1st. place, what's the big-deal with this 'pure/not-pure-Malay' thingy ni..?)

      4) Suffice to say, zaman dia Melayu-Cina-India dll semua dapat cari makan sama2.. Mana yg malazzz of course melopong je lar..:-)

      5) In the course of maintaining order & peace for ALL.. Of course it was deemed draconian, barbaric & sewaktu dengannya..

      As for your last para..'nuff-zed!!'..

    2. Dear Ghaz,

Thank you for your response, This is what I call civilized discussion. We don't have to agree fully with one another, even disagree vehemently but argue in ways pleasant for readers to read, especially on a Hari Raya like to day.

I really pity Najib, sometimes. His supporters don't come out helping to "explain" but often to cause disdain. High-and-mighty, rude and offensive statements, like some of those said to be from the PMO and 1-2 even seen here.

Maybe because they don't have sufficient facts and valid arguments to use. Because Najib has so far said only the not-for-personal-gain thingy on the RM2.6 billion in his personal accounts. His people themselves are confused, one saying it was for fighting Al Qaeda, another saying for fighting ISIS and yet another saying for fighting DAP. Sad. Very sad.

      Delete
    3. Tun Dr Mahathir gives the facts and the arguments in simple language in his blog and elsewhere. His supporters can easily use and quote.those. In any case the weaknesses of those he condemns are often so glaring that his supporters can see and write using their own words.

Tun had the Ministry of Information under which are the various agencies tasked with the job of explaining. I wonder what happens to such a Ministry or to such government functions of explaining under Najib since he took the PMship. The Ministry of Information is now called communication, whatever.

PMO has appeared to be the one coming out with statements that, under Tun De Mahathir, would have come out from the Department of Information, Bernama and the like.

And they got their statement on the "legacy of wealth" attributed to Najib's step son suddenly becoming rich being protested to in very strong terms by Najib's siblings, including Nazir of CIMB. The siblings put out a written statement that was signed by all of them. What a shame.

    4. Dear Anon 7:21,

Concur verbatim with your 1st. para..

Pity Najib? Heavens, why for..? "1st. Golden Rule of LEADERSHIP dictates everything is (his) fault.." Did he somehow miss this bit?.. Or what, he wants to be a Leader c/w power etc tapi absolved from 'Mis-steps'?

As for your last para.. I opine humbly, it's a case of dah kena suap/santau/pukau. There is NO WAY anyone with valid, reasonable & sound Grey matter can support this RM2.6 debacle. One doesn't need a Degree or a slide-rule to figure this out. With all the rhetoric & uber-weak excuses offered, in fact personally I felt insulted.

    5. Dear Ghaz,

      Thanks again.

Considering there has been opposition to him within UMNO itself, the continued attacks by WSJ, NYT etc making his and Malaysia's image overseas very bad, would you think it possible that UMNO Supreme Council or the Ketua2 Bahagian would one day ask him to "berundur"?

I'm not familiar with the Supreme Council thinking and also the Youth, Wanita and Ketua2 Bahagian.

But they did get Najib to flip flop and actually U-Turned on the Sedition Act for which I was so relieved.

And maybe the Tun is still listened to by the older guys in those power holding organs of UMNO but that Cash Is King reigns supreme and some come out with the excuse of not wanting to split the party.

      Delete
    6. Dear Anon 10:20,

So awfully sorry, my take is viz the Sedition Act, it had no 'monetary-bearing', really.. That WAS the difference.

It's NOT Nuclear-Physics or Rocket-Science so To-Pluto with their thinking, says I. WHAT were they thinking..? That we/the Public are setupid-papadom..? :-)

Even with this WSJ, NYT expose/reporting; with the amount of 'skeletons' in some of these SC/KBU/Youth/Wanita individuals.. Regret, NOT in this lifetime as the 'Cash is King' element has been ingrained too deep. Too many of 'em are beholden as well.

How else to explain their lack of action? Why in the first place for the life of me, did UMNO permit an individual's mess to drag the entire party?

This is Politics. As Political Leaders, they know 'the Game'. We/The Public cannot be at fault for 'perceiving'. More so in the face of damaging-arguments/evidence that has gone uptodate-unrebutted (with equal if not more solid counters).

Tun is certainly being given at least 'an ear', still. But that's just it, no more. Not-nearly enough to effect a significant impact, yet. Who else are the older guys? Dang! If only he has Dumbledore's wand..

Personally I thought TSMY is audacious enough & could interimly-assume the mantle but he ended-up..well..ntah la..waiting for the next-life maybe..

When one considers even Ku Li pun tak berani (?) to initiate any Parliamentary-related address, then it does appear hopeless. At least 'til coming-GE..

Though a new post is out and this post will be abandoned by readers, I want it on record that I'm not giving up hope.

They say the Lord works in mysterious ways, even it it means hoping for a miracle, I still hope they replace Najib before PRU14. Otherwise it''ll be doom for UMNO/BN at PRU14.

Good for the chat and maybe we'll do so in another post in due course.

  2. The good old doctor refused to kow tow to the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank during the Asian Financial Crisis, refused to take any loans with all sorts of strings attached detrimental to this country.

When the Zionist Jew George Soros tried to, and did destabilize the Ringgit by his foreign exchange speculation and manipulation in this country, he devised Malaysia's own plan of countering it and finally pegged the Ringgit at RM3.80 =US$1 and it sabilized. The economy went back on track.

  5. I have a different understanding on why tun m did not consider accepting assistance from either the imf or the world bank. (however this is pure speculation).

we know for a fact that those two world bodies are subservient to the us govt who thru her failed us diplomat john mallot (us ambassador to Malaysia at that time) were tasked to give protection to their darling political protégé anwar Ibrahim also known as the 'serial sodomite'.i was then a middle ranking official in the treasury and was aware that the relationship between tun m and anwar has reached rock bottom.

it could be the conditions put forward by the us govt thru these two bodies vis sa vis anwar ibrahim that may have dissuaded tun m from working with them.

whatever it is, only a genius could have thought of such creative strategies to rehabilitate the malaysian economy.

    1. Tun had a dogged determination to succeed and a dogged determination to put down whoever crossed him. Yes, Anwar had crossed him then and it must have contributed to his decision to do away with IMF deals.

Succeed he did get in bringing back the economy on the normal path and success he did get in putting Anwar down.

Moral of the story is: don't cross him. Now Najib has. Tun has not got success in bringing Najib down but like hell he is still trying.

      And I wish him success.

With your experience in the Treasury, would appreciate an opinion or two from you on why the Treasury Secretary General did not say much to explain why the Treasury-owned 1MDB became so heavily indebted and had such a poor cash flow that it had problems in making scheduled interest payments.

    3. tq anon 23.00.
      I reckon u were never/not a govt official.
usally as a civil servants we are tasked to offer advice to our political masters (ie the minister in charge) n record it in the form of memos or minutes for future reference.
I m quite sure (presume) that the same was done on issues involving the imdb. once a final decision is taken by the minister and as an obedient civil servant it is our duty to execute to the best of our ability. if you disagree intensely with whatever decision the minister has made then your only option is to request for a transfer to another govt agency. however being the second most senior govt servant, the treasury sec gen can either stay on and do the best he can or request for early retirement.
nobody knows what really transpired with regards to the role each entity played in the imdb operations. the recent pac proceedings had thrown some light. however without a full fledge wholesome enquiry, we will not be able to know for sure.
but one thing I can assure u is that almost all senior civil servants are very dedicated and patriotic and would put the interest of the country above anything else. thus I m proud to have been part of it.

    4. Dear Anon 22:32,

My POV is, whether DS Anwar had crossed him was subjective. What was a fact, is that DS Anwar was NOT qualified as a Finance Minister to address the crisis, then. So was the fact that DS Anwar propagated IMF's prescription. To the Grand Old Man, this was as good as selling-off the country.

Thus, one just needs to consider Tun M's successful solution against what DS Anwar had wanted to do.

As for 'crossing'..that is the ingredient of Politics ain't it..'Friend-today, Foe-tomorrow'..

    5. Is politics dirty or is it the politicians that's dirty, that's the question. The end justifies the means, that's the Machiavellian thing.

I read that in the past 60 years or so, there was one case of a former Deputy Minister shooing dead his rival in Gemas many years ago. Thank God we don't have so many such incidents and not so many political turn coats like in the Philippines.

South Philippines at one time was like cowboy country - they carry guns here and there. Political feuds compounded by religious feuds. Thank God again, not like Malaysia. We must have a strong leader to ensure our political, cultural and religious differences don't lead to anarchy. Enough with Bersih 1,2,3,4 all illegal street demos done without Police permits. UMNO should replace Najib as is seen as a weak leader, exploited on and taken advantage of.

I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Anwar had been PM. Can he be ruled out as a future PM? He would be out of prison at 68 years old, might still be strong and kicking. UMNO/BN might lose PRU by default and Anwar becomes PM. Tun Mahathir might not be around to stop that. God forbid. I detest the man Anwar.

Sorry folks heavy Hari Raya eating have made my mind lethargic and wondering around. I'll switch off that line now to avoid sounding depressive on a joyous day. Enjoy the rest of the day you nice people.

But don't confuse his intentions in attending Bersih 4. He wanted Najib be replaced, not the UMNO/BN Govenment.

He had said clearly when talking about a vote of no confidence against Najib in Parliament. He said IF the Opposition agree to UMNO/BN continue ruling after that.

That's not betrayal to anybody but to Najib. Actually Najib betrayed the Tun - not performing as expected when Tun pushed him up when he was in power.

      1. Tun ruled for 22 years always with 2/3 Parliamentary majority. Najib got the Chinese tsunami and the worst election results at PRU13.

      2. Tun faced the Asian Economic Crisis, stabilized the Ringgit and put the economy back on track. Najib has the Ringgit at its worst in 17 years now, got 1MDB indebted RM42 billion, not enough funds in the national coffers, introduced the damn unpopular and rakyat-burdening GST.

      3. Tun spent only RM17 million per PRU but Najib appears to spend RM2.6 billion for PRU13. Aiyoyo.

      4. Tun enhanced the NEP but Najib put it at the back burner to appease the Chinese but got the Chinese tsunmi and lost the popular votes to Anwarul Al Juburi
