Eat what you can afford, not what you feel like eating

At my aunt's place.

She's my father's sister.

She used to be an officer at the Fisheries Department but has now retired.

I'm at her place to settle some personal issues over the weekend.

Helped her cooked lunch today.

We had fried peria (bitter gourd), grilled ikan keli (catfish) and ulam (Malay salad) with sambal.

Simple lunch.

My aunt told me that these days she only buy food which are sold cheap at the time of her shopping.

"Cik sekarang beli mana yang murah, bukan beli yang teringin makan," she said.

"Peria tengah murah masa Cik beli tu. Cuma 90 sen sekilo je. Kalau ada yang murah buat apa beli yang mahal.

"Peria pun sedap juga. Nanti kalau brokoli tengah murah Cik beli lah brokoli pulak.

"Nak kata semua barang mahal tak juga. Kita pilih la yang kita mampu.

"Ikan keli tu pun murah je. Memang la tak sesedap dan seglamer ikan salmon, tapi okay juga la.

"Ulam sambung nyawa tu pun Cik tanam je kat pasu depan rumah tu. Tak payah beli."

My aunt who is in her late 50s grew up in a poor family.

It's a big family and my late grandfather was the sole breadwinner, working as a labourer.

My father used to tell me how things were different back then, growing up in a poor Malay family before the New Economic Policy was implemented.

Lacking things which now most of us took for granted was a norm back then according to him.

As my aunt was telling me today, my late grandmother was the one who thought her the concept of spending only what she can afford.

"Ya lah, kalau kita nak komplen je pasal hidup susah, tapi belanja nak macam tu juga, memang la tak jadi apa," said my aunt.

My aunt also reminded me that it's normal for the economy to go up and down all the time.

"Memang ekonomi ni macam tu. Sekejap mewah, sekejap susah. Kita kena adjust la.

"Kalau ekonomi merudum, kita belanja lah ala kadar. Tak boleh la ikut rasa je.

"Nanti kalau ekonomi dah okay semula, boleh la makan ikan bawal ke, ikan halibut ke.

"Tak payah nak kecoh-kecoh.

"Kena sabar banyak dan hidup ikut kemampuan."

My aunt is a bit like me when it comes to politics.

She's quite tired of what's going on.

Not unlike me, she feels that everyone should chill off and wait for the next general election to settle things.

"Yang dia orang nak huru hara bergaduh sekarang tu nak buat apa.

"Pilihanraya nanti undi je lah mana yang rasa boleh improve keadaan.

"Kalau kecoh sekarang pun suruh Najib tu turun bukannya jadi apa pun.

"Lebih baik concentrate kerja kuat lagi untuk tambah pendapatan.

"Kata ekonomi tak bagus, barang mahal, jadi kalau boleh buat duit lebih sikit kan bagus."

I totally agreed with my aunt on all that she said.

They were all just plain common sense.

  2. Annie, lebih baik u melawat Pusat Jagaan Warga Emas, Jalan Haji Manan, Kluang.

Mereka tak memerlukan BuyJet 2017 yang canggih, cukuplah kalau beri sedikit subsidi untuk beli tilam, pampers, bantal, gigi palsu, bubur dan milo.

Sediakan kerusi roda untuk bawa mereka mengundi nanti.

  6. Masalahnye Cik Annie, semua benda dah mahal. Kangkung pun dah mahal.

Keretakkan ekonomi dah mula terserlah. Yang merana kebanyakkan Melayu juga. Tidak apa. Melayu mudah alpa. Kita cakap je ini takdir Allah.

Updates from the Comic Relief Chinawoman:

The Blob (the pork-slurping Saviour Of The Malays) is on record as saying that its blog is of a "different breed" than yours (which is true, as nobody reads hers!)

There was an exchange with a commenter about her ugliness in which Miss Mata Extra-Sepet showed all the emotional maturity of a 14 year old girl.

And that's really the problem with her: she's a 14 year old girl trapped in the bloated body of a 53-year-old woman. So she acts out all her petty little "dun fren you" bitterness with all the people in her awful past: The Star, Malaysiakini, the DAP, etc.

  17. Annie,

I do not know your aunt, but you mentioned that she is a retired government servant.

When you work with the government, your monthly salary is fixed. After working for a long time, living out of fixed salaries with predictable paydays, it is only natural that one would "eat what he/she can afford, not what he/she feels like eating."

It is good that a government servant could control expenses like that, otherwise there might be temptation for corruption money to sustain him/her self.

But for many people, better food or better life would more often than not be the driving force to work and try harder. Would you prefer ikan kuning if you can have a blue-fin tuna? Would you send your kid to a local university if you can afford to send him to an ivy league school?

Every one in a free world is entitled to strive for better life, and to crave for better quality food that comes with it. There is no blame in that.

It is a shame if the government and all its servants do not put the welfare and well-beings of the Rakyat as their top priority. Go to the wet markets and see for yourself, what type of fishes are available for the Rakyat.

Annie you pride yourself for being knowledgeable about Japan. You must have heard of Tsukiji fish market. If that is too good a comparison, try Taipei fish market, or Bangkok's Samut Sakhon fish market, or Ho Chi Minh City fish market,or Kowloon fish market. Forget about the prices there, where good fishes cost less, just see the variety.

Even Pasar Kreta Ayer in Singapura, where most fishes are from Malaysia, has better quality and variety of fishes.

It is a question of affordability. Malaysian public simply couldn't afford the type of choices that even the Vietnamese or Thai can afford.

And the purchasing power of Ringgit Malaysia is getting shrunk by the days. Who is the culprit? The Malaysian Government under the current prime minister of course.

It is funny how shallow it can be when a government servant says "kerja kuat tambah pendapatan". It is this type of false equation that have bankrupted many ex-government-servant-turn-businessmen.

When it doesn't hurt, you can wait for the next general election. Better still, wait for Qiamat thenceforth Allah will surely judge, will He not?

    2. I am not really surprised with all these anti Najib comments. Not only in social media, even out there in the real world I feel as if this world is filled with Najib and Rosmah haters.
However,I have full confidence among Malaysians there are more people who support Najib @BN than those who oppose BN.
In any society or organisation those who speak a lot are usually those who form the minority. The majority prefer to keep quiet to avoid conflict hence the word 'silent majority'.
I am old enough to experience this .since 1999 (remember reformasi?),2004,2008 and 2013 the same thing happened.I purposely choose 1999 onward since there was no media social prior to 1999.
The only exception was 2008 when the GE was so calm and yer the opposition managed to surprise BN
Kalau yang bising bising ni tak perlu risau sangat.Mostly tong kosong aja.
Who knows, entah entah yg buat posting anti Najib tu org yg sama under different disguise

Kawan-kawan dari pakatan harapan pun dipersilakan memberi jawapan anda. You can write either in Bahasa Malaysia or English.

Please discuss in mature manner sebab ultimately you want the rakyat to side with you.

Well, in that case, please start the ball rolling by listing all his achievements for the country.

      Let me start:

      a) More than 55 major newspapers worldwide have covered the 1MDB scandal.

      Over to you...

you don't really answer my question. let me coment a bit about the 55 major newspapers have covered 1MDB the 'so called scandal'.May I know how many major newspapers in the world?Furthermore, we have to keep in mind yang nak mengundi memilih kerajaan nanti bukannya wartawan suratkhabar negara asing tu tapi rakyat Malaysia yang akan mengundi.

      Over to you , haha

ya, but world don't work like dat la bro, sorry la.

'In response to the uncertainty in Malaysia, foreign investors are selling Malaysian stocks at the fastest rate in any Asian economy. Malaysia’s currency – the ringgit – has also declined to a historical lows not seen since the Asian financial crisis in 1998. Experts have warned that the stock market is likely to worsen if the scandal leads to further tensions: “[the] already shaky trust of foreign investors is being eroded. Further outflows are possible,” according to Nomura Holdings Inc. strategist Mixo Das.'

Tak payah la syiok sendiri la bro. world running away from corruption. u think they cares wat u, utusan & bernama says? heheheh. no la they dont. So now bibirpink hv to jual maruah negara to china, becos china also corrupt like he.

takpe la. Dont affect u, kan? if we live bawah tempurung, ambik br1m, and stay stupid, of course la good for garmen. Dulu minum kopi o kat tepi jalan, skrg ada Starbuck, alḥamdulillāh!

Im sure you still vote for garmen even if kak ros steal your babys cot and sell your furniture 2 go shopping. Betul tak bro.

U are not alone. Many like you.

      Wat it proves actualy?

      Stupidity become contagious. Thats all.

    8. Prof K is correct.

The ongoing court cases in Singapore never happened.

BSI Bank & Falcon Bank are still functioning in the republic.

The Singapore media have never commented about 1MDB.

And the Malaysian rakyat are amazingly well-informed because they have unrestricted access to the media (local and foreign).

    9. Mr Prof

My reply was NOT in response to you actually, but to someone else but never mind. I believe you asked earlier if BN will win the election?

      The answer is "yes."

Ben Johnson of Canada also won Gold 100m in the olympics. Do you admire him? Hmmmmmm. BN will win because of severe malapportionment (if the EC followed the FConsti rules, rather than 4:1 it would be 1:1. That means the opposition would win by a margin of about 30 in Pen Mal. How do BN control E Mal? Ask people from there. it will open your eyes.) But the EC, like very other institution, has been corrupted by MO1. That's why your MO1 can steal our money freely. If you are happy with that, go ahead & vote accordingly. That's your right.

      Best regards,

  25. i have no absolute proof that bangla is becoming illegal malaysian because i dont have `cable` `power` and `influence` to get that kind of information
however i will be voting for opposition just by looking the overall view of how the country is now managed and how the public funds have been swindled on a very large scale
Asking me to proof-this, proof-that, proof-this, proof-that, well then fuck you prof kangkung
UMNO can manipulate the police, IGP, the court and all the critical places and then you asked us to provide proof
the swhole ystem is rigged by umno in favour of the rich songlap

King Kong cannot think straight.King Kong allows other animals to eat their share of dedak.
It appears that amongst the many millions of King Kongs born globally.....one pesky King Kong somehow wandered off towards the concrete jungles. And ended up in an university.
Now the King Kong refuses to accept his roots and brethren and calls itself Prof Kangkong.

  28. The Chinese just want Chinese schhols. With community support, dedicated teachers and quality education and an examination certificate recognised as entry into pretigious universities worldwide, the borderless world is their oyster. The same cannot be said of Malays who are being diluted further. Today, a Malay can be a Bhai, Rohingya, Bangla and even a Pakistani. So, in time they too entitled to all the privileges and thereby making the sharing of the Malay cake even smaller.

  29. Annie,

We should be extremely wary about what the Chinese are up to in cahoots with the Bugis thief:

    http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/world-s-largest-underground-city-at-kl-terminal-to-be-gem-on/3232964.html

You can bet that Lim Kang Hoo is knee-deep in this, and that the MCA were the "go-between" (we often forget that the local Chinese are just as bengkok as their Umno masters. Ali-Baba's going strong.)

The Bugis thief is so far gone that he needs to escape any way he can.

If he needs to sell our national sovereignty to other countries, no problem.

That's why the Rulers must step in before we become a province of China.

    This is not the end.

He will sell more to them.

    2. It's not as if the US is riding to the rescue...

Do you think that Hillary or Trump is even remotely interested in Malaysia?

When India, Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and even Indonesia are better pals with the US?

Malaysian foreign policy suffers from delusions of grandeur.

And China is just pandering to the syiok sendiri syndrome...

I don't see the Red Shirts demonstrating against Chinese investors and investments in the country.

      Why, I wonder?

I am not sure why your auntie is scrimping and saving considering the fact that she was an officer with the Fisheries Dept.

I thought that she would have retired with a nice little package.

Anyway, it is not so unusual for most of us to buy whatever is available and is cheap.

Not all of us are so lucky as to eat what we like regardless of price.
