Living and dying

Received news that a friend was dying of cancer last night.

I felt a deep sense of sadness but was not very sure how to react.

In the end, I just prayed something like this;

"Dear Allah, please make it easy for my friend. He is not a Muslim but please don't make him go to hell just because of that. He is a good guy despite that."

I admit that I'm not an Islamic religious expert and not sure if it was okay for me to recite such a doa.

The highest formal Islamic education that I had was when I studied up to Darjah Lima at a Sekolah Agama Johor.

That was when I was still in primary school.

But really, I don't want my friend to go to hell.

He is a Chinese and I believe that he doesn't have a religion.

The religious teachers told me that all non-Muslims go to hell after they died, but I find it hard to accept that because my friend is a good guy and never really harmed anyone.

I think I even sinned more than him, okay.

I really hope Allah will be merciful with him.

The last time I was at the deathbed of someone was about three years ago.

My uncle was at that time dying of cancer too.

I remember hugging him for a long while as he lay on the hospital bed.

At that time I whispered to him something like this to comfort him,

"Please don't worry about anything. Just remember Allah and pray to Him. Everyone loves you. See, we are all here with you. You are a good person and there's nothing for you to worry."

My uncle then recited the AlFatihah in a whisper and thanked me.

That's the last time I was with him.

Actually, I'm writing this to remind myself more than anyone else that life is short and that I should not waste it on unnecessary things despite them seemingly being so important at the moment.

One day, maybe not too long from now, I will die too.

I wish that when it's time for me to go, I will have a clear conscience on how I conducted myself on this earth and that my life is filled with love more than anything else.

I don't want to die while still hating someone or possessing things that rightly belongs to someone else or something like those.

Hopefully Allah will be merciful with me and allows me to have that.

I don't know about you all, but that's how I wish it will be for myself.

Okay lah, enough of me pouring my heart out.

Sorry, if any of you thinks it's a waste of time reading this post.

Take care and have a nice day, okay.

One’s sorrow at the other side of the world can make the entire world suffer; one’s happiness can make the entire world smile.”

  2. Annie, i have just finished reading a book 'the last lecture' written by Randy Pausch,a university professor who was dying of cancer when his wrote the book. Given the choice of sudden death and slow death as of dying of cancer i would rather choose the second alternative.
At least I can say sorry to my loved ones

  4. Your posting does not waste my time, Annie.

You did the correct thing....praying for your non-Muslim friend.
That's what, 'bismillāhirraḥmānirraḥīm is all about, anyway.
    i.e:
'In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the most Merciful.'

Allah cannot be 'Most Gracious', if you could only pray forgiveness for the Muslim alone.

  5. Annie .... You don’t have to feel guilty about silly things, only when you hurt someone. Live whatever life you want, whatever life you think is good. Discover morality with reason and compassion.
Seek fairness and justice in this life. Do not put off its enjoyments. You have love, work, pleasure, family, art, music, and science - much to make life worth living.
Do not allow this life, the only life we know that exist to be wasted.

  7. Allah is most merciful and most forgiving. Only he knows where each and everyone will be after death no mater whether the person was a muslim or not whilst living on this earth. Most important is what is in one's heart ,,...and that includes your very kind thoughts and prayers.

    1. Anon 23.18,

Have you ever heard the term "ambulance chasing"?

This is used on some lawyers who are said to follow ambulances in the hope that the patient in the ambulance has suffered some harm and will employ the services of the "ambulance chasing" lawyer to take legal action.

Here, we have a person who is dying and all you seem to think about is chalking up another convert on the pretext of saving his soul.

I am sorry but with all due respect to you and to other Muslims, I find your suggestion highly offensive and insensitive to the dying person.

Some may even say that you are trying to exploit another person during a time when he is under great stress and not able to think properly.

      What next?

Should we get Christians and Hindus and Buddhists and Taoists and others to line up and make their pitch for that fellow's soul in the hereafter?

      Is this how religion works?

Unfortunately, what the preacher had to say was distracted by the magnificent image of the vast universe. I guess, viewer would have paid more attention, had he videoed himself speaking. The expression on his face would have helped audience grab his revelation.

Anyway that image of the outer space must have been made or captured by the non-believers, since no Muslim country had ever send a rocket into space. Nor do they invent powerful telescope.

Two other monotheistic religion also believe in Kiamat. Sadly, while the non-believers are endeavouring to explore the universe as though they are trying to escape 'kiamat', we are supposed to syukur, redha and accept the ultimate fate.

Even JAKIM are only interested in sponsoring students to learn more religion from the Arabs, India or Pakistan. Since 'Dunia sudah di akhir zaman', JAKIM might have thought that Science, mathematic and other worldly knowledge could be bought from the kafir. Just like how Sunni & Shia are buying weapons from the kafir, to kill or annihilate each other.

  14. What an arrogant bastard. Listen up, there is no One God. There are many God's and each religion has its own God. My God to me is better than your God but then you would say the same. My heaven is not the same as yours and you are not welcome in my heaven just like I am not welcome in yours. We are going to our own heaven. Well, I am relieved in my heaven I won't have all the terrorist and the 72 virgins and your heaven could be a mad house. On earth you guys are on a perpetual fight among yourselves and it will be the same there. All the killing and bombing.

In any event the arsehole who said non-Muslims willl go to hell will need to go there to confirm. Until then to you your to me mine.

  18. Annie, you don't think that people should go to hell simply because they don't believe in what you believe in. So you know that your faith is not teaching you the right thing yet you still embrace your faith. That's what I don't understand about my Muslim and Christian friends. They are good and smart people yet they can still believe in things not proven, can't be proven and some proven to be wrong. Pelik!

  21. Praise be to Allaah.

It was narrated in a saheeh hadeeth that Naajiyah ibn Ka’b narrated that ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “I said to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), ‘Your old, misguided uncle has died (he was referring to his father Abu Taalib). Who will bury him?’ He said, ‘Go and bury your father.’ [I] said, ‘I will not bury him, for he died as a mushrik.’ He said, ‘Go and bury him, then do not do anything until you come to me.’ So I went and buried him, then I came to him with traces of dust and earth on me. He told me to wash myself, then he made du’aa’ for me in words that were more precious to me than everything on earth.”

    (al-Silsilah al-Saheehah, by al-Albaani, no. 161)

The Shaykh said, commenting on this hadeeth:

1 – It is allowed for the Muslim to take care of the burial of his mushrik relatives. That does not cancel out his hatred of their shirk. Do you not see that ‘Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) initially refused to bury his father for that very reason, as he said, “he died as a mushrik.” He thought that if he buried him when this was the case, that this was included in the forbidden kind of friendship as referred to in the aayah (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe! Take not as friends the people who incurred the Wrath of Allaah”

    [al-Mumtahinah 60:13]

When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) repeated the command to bury his father, he hastened to obey him and he gave up the notion that had initially occurred to him. This is what obedience means: that a person gives up his opinion in response to the command of his Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). It seems to me that a son’s burying his mushrik father or mother is the last act of good companionship that the son can do for his mushrik parent in this world. But after the burial, he cannot make du’aa’ for him or pray for forgiveness for him, because of the unambiguous words of Allaah (interpretation of the meaning):

“It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allaah’s forgiveness for the Mushrikoon, even though they be of kin”

    [al-Tawbah 9:113]

If this is the case, then how can people pray for mercy and forgiveness in the pages of newspapers and magazines for some of the kuffaar, in death announcements for money! Let the one who has any concern for his hereafter fear Allaah.

2 – It is not prescribed for him to wash or shroud a kaafir, or to offer the funeral prayer over him, even if he was a relative, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not tell ‘Ali to do that. If that were permissible, he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would have said so, because it is well known that it is not permitted for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) to delay explaining something at the time when that information is needed. This is the view of the Hanbalis and others.

3 – It is not prescribed for the relatives of a mushrik to follow his funeral, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not do that in the case of his uncle, although he was the one who was the most kind and compassionate towards him, and he even prayed to Allaah to make his punishment the lightest punishment in Hell.

In all of that there is a lesson for those who are deceived by pride in their lineage and who do not strive for their Hereafter with their Lord. Allaah indeed spoke the truth when He said (interpretation of the meaning):

“there will be no kinship among them that Day, nor will they ask of one another”
