About the pizza that the boy eats

The other day I wrote this post

About possibly more expensive goods and services

excerpts;

Just this morning my friend told me that the price of pre-cooked pizza she normally buys at Aeon Big supermarket has gone up.

It used to be RM4.70 per piece but now RM5.20.

I know, you all may say pizza is not an essential item, but that's not the case with my friend.

You see, my friend has a son who is with autism and the boy eats mostly pizza and roti canai. Seriously. He doesn't eat rice at all.

And for pizza, he only eats either those at Pizza Hut or that one prepared at Aeon Big. He doesn't even eat those at Domino Pizza.

Well, that's how it is with children with autism.

So, my friend has to bear with this. Hopefully the price will not go up further after the SST is implemented.

Unfortunately, the price did goes up.

Today my friend forwarded me this message;

Adik2 tu cakap kami pun terkejut kak dgn harga tu.. adalah org tu syor beli jer pizza from pizza hut.. mmg lah pizza hut buat masa ini take away personal pan masih lg RM4.70.. tapiiii pizza from Pizza Hut Mikail hanya makan based/dough nya saja, topping tak makan.. lagi pulak kalau pizza from Pizza Hut personal pan tak cukup, dia makan yang regular sebab topping tak makan. Kenapa saya beli pizza from AEON Big? Sebabnya Mikail makan the whole pizza hawaiian chicken tu incl topping (dgn slice chicken, nenas semuanya dia makan) at least dia makan benda lain selain dari tepung (roti canai, tepung.. base/dough pizza pun tepung)

Susah nak explain kat orang yang tak faham anak kita ni.. (lagi2 orang yang sokong sgt SST ni... oppppssss)

Well, what to do. That's just how it is.

That's all.

  2. Annie,

I am sorry to hear the difficulties your friend has with her son's diet.

My only knowledge of autism comes from what little I have read or what I have seen from documentaries.

What kind of financial assistance from the government is your friend eligible for?

Perhaps she should have a chat with her MP.

Medically speaking, is there somewhere she can turn to for help in modifying her son's dietary behaviour?

I am sorry I am not much more help.

I can talk about the performance of past governments, the wonderful renaissance which the new government will bring, etc etc but it is all pointless because families like your friend need help NOW!!!!

//You nak coba spin brape kali on autism pizza cerita la//

Spin or no spin, we should have some compassion for those who are less fortunate then us.

Bear in mind that, very likely, Annie's friend is not the only person who has such health-related problems.

I know it is very early in the PH administration but we, the rakyat, should be looking to the areas where we want, nay, DEMAND better performance over that lousy incompetent UMNO/BN administration.

Like I have previously said, I do not expect PH to be able to do very much for at least several months - there is no magic wand to fix the years of neglect and mismanagement by UMNO/BN.

Things look tough for Annie's friend and others like her and I am sorry I have no answers.

  6. I don't have kids with autism. Therefore, I may not know something those with the experience, have.

However, I pity the kid, not the mother who have to bear the raising cost of feeding him. As it is, if the mother had not introduced those junk food in the first place, her child would not have been 'addicted' as he is now.

Maybe your friend should raise and feed her child as though he is 'normal' and stop treating him as something 'special' so that he could become more self-dependent.
Maybe its best to adopt another child and let the autistic son realize that his mother needs to attend to his little sibling too.

Anyway, I once heard a doctor on TV, advising a client with difficulties feeding a child with selective crave for certain type of food. The doctor said... 'we as parents must teach our children what food to eat, not the other way around. As adults, its only logical that we know better, which kind of food is good for health.'

Therefore, in growing-up healthy, its the nutrients in the food that matters, not taste.

//Therefore, I may not know something those with the experience, have.//

From what I have seen in documentaries, it is really really awful.

The child may strike out at people or objects, attempt self-harm, destroy things, scream and cry uncontrollably, etc etc.

But when they calm down, they act as though nothing happened and everything is perfectly normal.

//As it is, if the mother had not introduced those junk food in the first place,//

That may be true, but we do not know the circumstances where and when that "junk food" was introduced.

Desperation can cause people, even mothers, to act irrationally.

//Maybe your friend should raise and feed her child as though he is 'normal' and stop treating him as something 'special' so that he could become more self-dependent.//

No, as far as I know, this is impossible.

Autistic children cannot be treated as "normal" as we know it.

There is something "broken" in their brain and their sense of values, of right and wrong, of everything is different.

I think that you probably meant is that there are medically proven techniques to handle autistic children, in which case, you are right.

I do not know if the Malaysian health system has access to those medical practitioners who can help people like Annie's friend.

    Also, there is medication available.

//I once heard a doctor on TV, advising a client with difficulties feeding a child with selective crave for certain type of food.//

Children with fussy food habits are not always or necessarily autistic.

I don't think that doctor would be talking about autistic children.

In fact, I don't think he would dare suggest his techniques for autistic children.

As far as I know, caring for autistic children is a very specialised area.

//Therefore, in growing-up healthy, its the nutrients in the food that matters, not taste.//

    Heheheheh!!

I eat for taste, not for health :)

I don't care what anybody may tell me about how healthy it is, but you will NEVER EVER see me eating this

There are probably millions who might not agree with you but I'll take any compliments coming my way :)

//She need to cook / buy gluten free food for her//

Is there some specific medical reason for the gluten-free diet?

I have read that in mamy cases, ppl just assume that a glutenfree diet is good, either from being told about it by friends or just to follow a fad.

As far as I know, a gluten-free diet is to address celiac disease and has nothing to do with autism.

Ocassionally, there is, apparently a non-celiac gluten intolerance issue but being a non-medical person, I dont know how common this is.

//And when she throws tantrum it takes time to calm her//

Yup, and after the tantrum, everything is perfectly normal like nothing ever happened.

//My salute to the carer of autistic people//

The love and dedication of such carers is truly to be commended and admired.

And it is not just those who care for the autistic but for family members who suffer from other ailments like Downs or even just old age.

Many of us simply have no idea of the personal sacrifices those carers may have made.

I personally know of a couple of cases where the carers have never married because they have spent their entire lives caring for a less fortunate sibling.

If there is good participation from the rakyat and there is good enforcement, such dishonest businessmen will not survive long.

    Look at it this way.

If I whack you hard on your head once, perhaps you might ignore me.

If I whack you on your head 2 or 3 or 5 times, in the same place, you might change your behaviour.

Oh, whacking you 2 or 3 times did not change your behaviour?

Obviously, I am doing something wrong and I must whack you differently. :)

To keep on topic with Annie's post, it's probably like dealing with an autistic child... except that whacking autistic children does not get you anywhere becos I dont think they understand why they are suffering from the pain.. therefore, you have to think of something else...

But we are dealing with adults making commercial decisions here to make supernormal profits, whack lah :)

The harder the better, I say :)

So, you can see that you can NEVER win against the will of the rakyat - if we, the rakyat, choose to enforce the law and/or modify the law to improve the welfare and betterment of the rakyat :)

Of cos lah, I am just one lone voice and I am a nothing nobody, ok? :)

But if enough of the rakyat stand up and threaten their "employees" with dismissal at the next PRU, I think our "employees" will listen :)

We, the rakyat, did not vote in PH to be just like UMNO/BN.

    WE WANT CHANGE!!!

  23. SST is much better and simpler. GST is at all the chain and everything will increase. SST can do targeted tax collection and can promote certain good consumption. SST bring "less" revenue to the government and need efficient managing. Of course, government should be efficient and cannot keep growing. A healthy society need only 30% government and 70% private industries to generate much better growth and income...

  24. Annie,

There's no correlation between autism and SST/GST.

My nephew has autism. In the beginning he had the habit of eating the same type of food just like your friend's son. Later on he's ok with different type of foods although he has his preferences. Well, insha Allah your friend's son will be ok. Just need a lot of practice and patience.

As for SST, I believe this comes down to implementation and enforcement. There will always be room for manipulations by greedy business people. That's when the enforcement comes.

Just to refresh everyone's mind, BN kalah because of GST and Najib.
