Lynas employees fear losing jobs,
hand memo to govt
excerpts;
Their representative, Jumaat Mansor, told reporters at the entrance to Parliament that Lynas may be facing problems with compliance, which may lead to the company not having its licence renewed by the government in September next year.
If the problem is not dealt with immediately, more than 1,000 employees – 97 per cent of whom are locals – will be out of job and this could affect more than 4,000 members of their households.
“We are gathering here today hoping the government will reconsider its decision and think of the fate of the workers should the plant’s licence not be renewed,” he said.
I'm glad that the Lynas employees are still fighting for their rights and asking for fair treatment by the government.I understand that they are doing it in face of adversity as the current government for now looks hell bent on closing down their workplace.
The minister in charge, Yeo Bee Yin even twisted the finding of the executive committee that she herself was tasked to set up to review Lynas' operations.
She insisted that Lynas must ship the residue of its plant to Australia while the actual fact was that the committee gave Lynas three options which were listed at number 28 on page 17 of its report.
I'm putting it here verbatim;
You may wonder why the minister did such a thing and the answer is simple - she, along with other Pakatan politicians, the likes of Fuziah Salleh and Wong Tack are to gain politically with the shutting down of Lynas.
Whether it's done rightfully or wrongfully doesn't really matter to them.
Yeo Bee Yin, has been an anti-Lynas advocate since the start when DAP used the issue to galvanise especially the Chinese community support for the party.
The anti-Lynas Himpunan Hijau rally in Kuantan in February, 2012 was the first ever with overwhelmingly Chinese-majority participants since 1969. It was later emulated at several other Bersih rallies.
Of course now the minister, who is from DAP couldn't allow Lynas to continue its operation even after the review committee found nothing wrong with it.
To allow Lynas to continue means admitting that DAP and its allies have all the while lied from the start of their smear campaign against BN way back before the 2013 general election.
This is what Yeo Bee Yin wrote about Lynas back then;
Well, it's actually nothing much - just her trying to convince people about how environmentally aware and knowledgeable that she was while whacking the then minister in charge of environment Maximus Ongkili over Lynas.
Now, she is the one in charge and you all can see that she is still trying to profit politically from the whole thing to the point of twisting facts laid down by the Lynas review committee which members she herself appointed.
Does she really care about the environment?
Well, she was silent on the potential destruction of three Ramsar sites in Johor, which is her own state.
You can read that in this previous post of mine;
Re-gazetting Pulau Kukup and others,
Yeo Bee Yin and gang should support
Some Pakatan supporters had argued that Yeo Bee Yin should be excused as she was inexperienced and that's why she was clueless about Ramsar sites and such.
I don't think that's a good excuse for a minister in charge of environment who once tried to convince people about how knowledgeable and caring she was for the envoironment.
Well, she seems to know a lot about Lynas though. She apparently knows so much that she even ignored facts laid out by experts appointed by herself to review Lynas' operations.
And those other Pakatan self-proclaimed environmentalists Fuziah and Wong Tack....what a bunch of fakes.
Ya, that's what I think of them.
It's all just for their political interests.
It doesn't matter to them if people lose their jobs because they make decisions and campaigned on an issue based on lies and twisted facts.
They also don't care if investors shy away from this country because our government chase away or penalise fellow investors just because a minister and some politicians on its side wanted to benefit politically from it doing so.
That's what this Lynas issue is all about now.
Oh, ya, they will tell the Lynas employees who are about to lose their jobs to look for other employment....easy peasy.....just like what they said to others such as those 20,000 Gamuda people who were at risk of becoming unemployed when they stopped the MRT project back than.
Ya, so easy for them.
So much for Malaysia Baru.

Exactly right Annie! It is amazing that the minister can order a review committee and then when the 6 scientific experts find Lynas to be safe and compliant, she just throws out the report and continues with her own ideological/political vendetta. Is this the fair, transparent, objective, scientific and just "new Malaysia" that she was meant to be apart of? If she is any indication, perhaps the old Malaysia wasn't so bad after all.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you expect from a DAP Minister.? Malays life always last.
ReplyDeleteAnnie,
ReplyDelete//she, along with other Pakatan politicians,.... are to gain politically.//
EVERY TIME a politician does something, it is for political gain.
Some times, it is also for personal gain, as we have seen during UMNO's administration prior to May 9th, but that is another story.
So, I am not sure why you seem upset by Yeo, Fuziah and Wong trying to gain politically.
//DAP used the issue to galvanise especially the Chinese community support for the party//
No lah.
The Lynas issue was NOT what "galvanised" "the Chinese community support for the party", OK?
The Chinese community was sick and tired of MCA.
If MCA had done their job properly, DAP would still be a one-man party trying to garner one or two votes in some remote village at the back of Ulu Langat.
//the first ever with overwhelmingly Chinese-majority participants since 1969//
Have you considered the possibility that many Chinese are a bit more educated and understand the risks a bit more?
Just a consideration, OK?
//the minister.... couldn't allow Lynas to continue its operation even after the review committee found nothing wrong with it.//
Really?
The committee found nothing wrong?
Maybe the committee did not do a very good job on the report?
The committee itself did not seem to have done any independent studies itself and the review appears to be based on old studies done years ago.
I have already mentioned my concerns about the monitoring mechanisms and to date nobody has explained to me how the monitoring will be done to ensure that Lynas remains safe, if it was ever safe in the first place.
And oh, those 3 options which the committee gave Lynas?
What a joke!!
That's just stating the bloody obvious, ain't it?
What did the review committee expect Lynas to do with the waste? Hide it under the bed?
Talking about waste, what does the committee recommend Lynas do with the discharged water?
How will we know that discharged water was treated properly? Does anybody know?
//To allow Lynas to continue means admitting that DAP and its allies have all the while lied from the start//
And to allow Lynas to continue operating without some of the most basic questions being answered is good for the people who live around and downstream from the Lynas plant?
How about a very basic question like how do we monitor the waste water discharge? Once a year?
Here's another one - how do we monitor air quality? From an airconditioned office in Putrajaya?
Does anybody know?

1. So, it's really about political gains after all.
Delete2. Sure, Chinese more educated than others.
3. The committee was set up by Pakatan government and members appointed by Yeo Bee Yin herself.

It's a good enough excuse for me. :)
I do, however, expect the Minister to get up to speed with ALL things environmental in the next few months.

I would use the word "experts" advisedly.
There were times when I thought that the report looked like some secondary school project!!
//what a bunch of fakes.//
And I remind you again - they are NOT fakes, just one-issue environmentalists.
//That's what this Lynas issue is all about now.//
Yes, I agree with you that jobs and foreign investment are two very important aspects here.
But what about community health and safety?
Is that also not important?
//Oh, ya, they will tell the Lynas employees who are about to lose their jobs to look for other employment//
It is unfortunate if people lose their jobs.
It is unfortunate if the economy is simply not robust enough to provide alternative employment.
It is unfortunate that we had a kleptocratic government who was more interested in accumulating personal wealth instead of building a strong economy which can absorb such displacements in industry.
We may feel sorry for the Lynas employees if they lost their jobs, but how about feeling sorry for the tens of thousands of Malaysians who don't even have a job right now?
I do hope Azmin Ali and Lim Guan Eng can do their jobs properly and the economy will improve.
Hopefully by September next year when the Lynas decision will be made, there will be alternatives for any displaced Lynas employees.

Annie,
ReplyDelete//They submitted their findings to the committee at the recent public hearing.//
OK, I must have somehow missed those findings.
There did not seem to any of those sample readings from 2018, well, at least I didn't see anything from anywhere dated 2018 in that review report.
Surely the review committee would have refered to those sample readings, wounldn't they?
I mean, those sample readings would surely form a crucial part of the review committee's deliberations.
Otherwise, what is the point of taking sample readings?
So, I have no idea where those 2018 readings are.
And recommendations for monitoring?
None?
Everything fine and dandy there?
No need for the review committee to comment or make any recommendations about monitoring?

Again I repeat, the committee was set up by the Pakatan government and members named by Yeo Bee Yin herself. If you are not happy with the committee, then ask the minister to set up a new one with REAL EXPERTS this time. Then make a decision AGAIN. Ok?

Here's Annie's own supervisor's exact words:
"Pictures sometimes lie. But these Lynas workers who are fighting to keep their jobs look like Malays, all of them. And those who want to close down Lynas (and make those Malays jobless) have always been predominantly Chinese.
Am I wrong to see a clash of colours here?
But Annie, I notice, is experiencing the same symptoms. Her latest posting Why YBY and gang want to close down Lynas contains words like "overwhelming Chinese majority", "the support of the Chinese community" and "DAP".
You get it now?
You see, these people "care" about these issues like Hadi cares about Islam, or Najib cares about the Malays.
They are merely looking for ways to stir racial shit, because that's the way they have always done it, and they can't think of a fresher angle.
That applies to RPK, the supervisor, and all the macai like Annie.
All paid from a rapidly dwindling stockpile of dedak.

I told you I am a nice guy :)
//2. They are fake environmentalists,//
I say single-issue environmentalists, sorry :)
I am, however, prepared to agree that they are pretty much useless for any environmental matter outside that one single solitary issue.
//3. Decisions on community health and safety must be done based on scientific facts and evidence.//
I don't see very much of those scientific facts and evidence in the review committee's report which say that Lynas is perfectly safe.
Where are the 2018 sample readings in that report?
//Sure, make people lose their jobs to gain political mileage and then blame the previous government for it//
So, if the Lynas plant and the Lynas work environment cannot be proven to be safe for the workers and the community, we should continue to operate the plant?
Because we can make lotsa money, right?
You have a very strange approach to the social responsibilities of a government.
It's almost like you are going for the short term gain, and damn the long term pain because you will not be around to answer the questions.
Here's something to consider - all the money, and more, you make in the short term could be needed to offset the medical costs incurred in the long term from radiation poisoning if Lynas was not safe.
Sounds like you are willing to take that risk.
I feel it is unconscionable to take such risks on behalf of people who simply do not understand the issue as well as you do.
As for blaming the previous government, if displaced workers cannot find a job in today's economy, who is to blame?
Lim Guan Eng? Azmin Ali? Because they did not turn around an economy, ruined by a kleptocratic government, in 6-7 months?
Are there any examples anywhere in the world where such a miraculous turnaround has been achieved in such a short time?
Annie, like I said elsewhere, I am not your average run-of-the-mill Pakatan supporter.
I will cut PH some slack where I feel they need it but there will come a time, in a coupla years, when I will not be such a nice guy when they fuck up.

You want to talk about avoiding risks posed by industries? Then go and close all the factories as all of them pose all sorts of risks. Hey, an oil refinery can blow up and cause death, destruction, pollution etc too okay. If you want to close Lynas and cause thousands to lose their jobs, then make sure you have the facts and scientific evidence to back your decision. Dont set up a committee of experts to back your decision and then when the committee's findings don't support your argument to close down Lynas, you ignore it and proceed to do what you want to gain your stupid political mileage. Annie,
ReplyDelete//So, every time a bunch of politicians on your side decide to gain some political mileage,//
I repeat, EVERY politician, regardless of political affiliation UMNO, PAS or Pakatan, is out there for political mileage.
I say let them have their little fantasies.
On our part, we will simply continue to judge them by the benefits which accrue to the community.
If we, as a community, do not benefit, we should get rid of them.
//because those bunch of self-serving politicians make a decision based on their whims and fancies instead of facts or scientific evidence?//
In a way there are lots of scientific facts and evidence against the mining and production of radioactive material.
I think what we should be looking at here are the safety aspects of the production methods, in particular the monitoring mechanisms.
//Then go and close all the factories as all of them pose all sorts of risks. //
Mere risks alone are not sufficient grounds to shut a factory down.
It is how the factory handles that risk.
If a factory does not ensure that its production methods do not harm the community and the environment, shut it down.
That is in fact what the Selangor government did to the recycled plastics industry.
//If you want to close Lynas and cause thousands to lose their jobs, then make sure you have the facts and scientific evidence to back your decision.//
I repeat, we already know of the dangers of mining and producing radioactive material.
We already know that Lynas is quite successful in producing a high quality product.
What we do not know is how effective their monitoring mechanisms and safety procedures are.
//And you are ok with that....whats wrong with you?//
The Minister is simply doing what she believes is in the best interest of the community - well, she had better be. :)
There is a need to consider the health and wellbeing of the community at large versus continued employment of the Lynas workforce.
If the Minister cannot be convinced of the efficiency and effectiveness of the safety procedures and monitoring undertaken by Lynas, what do you suggest she do?
Allow Lynas to continue operating?
I also want to remind you that in a vibrant and robust economy, any displaced worker should be able to get a job elsewhere.
The transition to another job may be painful, but with government and corporate assistance, there should be no problems - in a vibrant and robust economy, that is.

" Right now the fact that the Semenanjung Malays are politically split is not good for the country.
Each time the Semenanjung Malays are divided the country has issues.

As rabid, foaming at the mouth Pas Pis Pus duds? Certainly not.
As thieving, kniving UMNO low life? Certainly not.
As scheming, totally brain dead Muslim Brotherhood wannabes? No.
As mad Salafis masquerading as good guys? No way.
The country needs decent, hard working, intelligent, progressive Malays to unite.
All other choices will not work.

♥-♥-♥-♥ ANTI LYNAS JOKERS ARE REALLY TRYING TO SCRAPE THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL.
ReplyDelete♥ Anti Lynas MP said that Government would be irresponsible if it fails to close down the Lynas plant because Thoron gas will be poisoning the people!
♥ According to the OEKO report, the amount of Thoron gas (Radon 220) produced by one tonne of WLP is only a miniscule number i.e. 167 femtogram or
0.000000000000167 gram per tonne of WLP with a half life of 5.4 seconds.
This amount is not enough to tickle the unmentionable organ at the rear end of a tiny newborn pigmy caterpillar!
And because its half life is only 5.4 seconds, it cannot be detected outside the confines of the Lynas compound and will never be able to reach the people living nearby.
♥ Anti Lynas MP claimed that the heavy metals Nickel, Chromium, Mercury and Lead have increased in the ground water.
WLP consist of (according to the EIA by the Malaysian government):
Phosphorus Oxide 19.77%
Iron Oxide 19.74%
Aluminium Oxide 2.86%
Calcium Oxide 1.36%
Magnesium Oxide 0.03%
Manganese Oxide 0.37%
Barium Oxide 0.3%
Zinc 0.1%
Strontium Oxide 0.4%
Thorium Oxide 1665 ppm
Uranium Oxide 22.5 ppm
♥ There is NO NICKEL or CHROMIUM or LEAD or MERCURY IN THE WLP or The OTHER 2 RESIDUES as well.
♥ And According to the OEKO report, the WLP consists of what is essentially valuable phosphate fertilizers enriched with Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, Manganese, Zinc and Sulphates, with the following chemicals:
FePo4.5H2O…………………………….54%
Mg3(PO4).5H2O………………………..0.2%
MgCO3.3H2O……………………………2.5%
MgSO3.7H2O……………………………6.5%

Pr2(CO3)3.5H2O……………………………………0.03%
Ce2(CO3)3.H2O……………………………………..0.4%
La2(CO3)3.5H20……………………………………..0.2%
So the single spike of Nickel in the underground water must be of Malaysian origin, either FROM SABOTAGE, LAB ERROR OR THE BAUXITE MINING.
♥Anti Lynas MP also claimed that there are over 800 tons of Thorium accumulated in the Lynas WLP residue.
Malaysian soil has an average of 82 Bq/Kg or 20 ppm of Thorium (IAEA).
Lynas has a land area of 100 hectares or 1,000 metres by 1,000 metres and if we consider the soil of specific gravity of 2.5 up to 1,000 metre deep, we would come with 50,000 tons of Thorium.
If there are 50,000 tons of Thorium under Lynas and owned by the people of Malaysia, why fuss about the 800 tons of Thorium on top of Lynas?
THE ANTI LYNAS JOKERS ARE NOT JUST TRYING TO SCRAPE THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL BUT RATHER THE SOIL AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BARREL..!
Government would be irresponsible if it fails to close down the Lynas plant?
GOVERNMENT WOULD BE IRRESPONSIBLY EVIL IF IT WERE TO CLOSE DOWN LYNAS FOR NO GOOD REASON OTHER THAN TO ENABLE THE ANTI LYNAS JOKERS TO MASSAGE THE INFLATED EGO OF THEIR EGOISTIC MASTER BRAINWASHERS BY DESTROYING THE LIVELIHOOD OF THOUSANDS OF INNOCENT WORKERS WHO DEPEND ON LYNAS TO PUT FOOD ON THE TABLE TO FEED THEIR HUNGRY CHILDREN.
♥-♥-♥-AUSTRALIA DUMPING RADIOACTIVE WASTE INTO MALAYSIA?
ReplyDeleteAnti Lynas MP demanded that Lynas should send all the waste back to the Mount Weld Mine in Australia.
The waste from the mine or gangue (tailings consisting of useless rocks, sand and other materials) have already been returned to the mine!
What happens is that the ore that Lynas mined has been processed and refined and the tailings or gangue which consist of 73% of the ore, are removed and sent back to the mine.
Lynas process 240,000 tonnes per annum of ore to produce 66,000 tonnes of concentrate and the 170,000 tonnes of WASTE has already been SENT BACK TO THE MINE.
So this part of the demand has already been fulfilled.
After the processing, the valuable concentrate consists of Phosphate Fertilizers with a good content of Rare Earth Phosphates are sent to Malaysia to separate the rare earths from the Phosphate Fertilizers.
The process of concentrating the ore has also concentrated the Thorium 232 to a content of only 6 Bq/g.
In Australia, the Thorium was concentrated by removing the soil. So it is legitimate that we can put the soil back in Malaysia to take it back to its natural state. In fact this process of dilution by blending of a NORM so as to make it fit to be recycled has been encouraged by
♥- European Atomic Energy Community,
♥- Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations,
♥- International Atomic Energy Agency,
♥- International Labour Organisation,
♥- International Maritime Organisation,
♥- OECD Nuclear Energy Agency,
♥- Pan American Health Organisation,
♥- United Nations Environment Programme, and.
♥- World Health Organisation.
All the advanced countries like the USA, UK, Canada, France, Japan and Australia ALLOWS and FOLLOWS this basic safety principle of World Health Organisation, International Labour Organisation and other reputable international organisations.
Any NORM (Naturally Occurring Material) with an activity of 10 Bq/g or less is considered to be non-radioactive for transportation purposes with no restrictions in all the advanced countries but in Malaysia the level of activity is fixed at a miserable 1 Bq/g because the Malaysian regulations are outdated and is based on the obsolete 1985 IAEA transport recommendation.
So we have the rather comical situation where the concentrate is treated as nonradioactive in Australia and magically becomes radioactive as the ship enters Malaysian waters.
In Malaysia, the rare earths are separated from the valuable fertilizer called WLP.
WLP consist of (according to the EIA by the Malaysian government):
Phosphorus Oxide 19.77%
Iron Oxide 19.74%
Aluminium Oxide 2.86%
Calcium Oxide 1.36%
Magnesium Oxide 0.03%
Manganese Oxide 0.37%
Barium Oxide 0.3%
Zinc 0.1%
Strontium Oxide 0.4%
Thorium Oxide 1665 ppm
Uranium Oxide 22.5 ppm
And NO NICKEL OR CHROMIUM.
The WLP, like all the almost 3 million tons per year of imported radioactive phosphate and radioactive Potassium fertilizers which cost Malaysia millions of Dollars, is only slightly radioactive with an activity of 6 Bq/g.
Anti Lynas MP also claimed that there are over 800 tons of Thorium accumulated in the Lynas WLP residue.
Because the government refuses to allow Lynas to sell its valuable phosphate rich fertilizers, a large pile of these fertilizers are left idle WHILE WE SPEND HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF OUR VALUABLE FOREIGN EXCHANGE JUST TO IMPORT THE THREE MILLION TONS PER YEAR OF RADIOACTIVE PHOSPHATES AND RADIOACTIVE POTASSIUM!

ReplyDeleteBUKIT MERAH STUDY THONG MK
In a very large study of birth defects over a 14 month period in the Kinta district in 2005, Thong MK from the University of Malaya found that there were 253 babies with major birth defects in 17,720 births, giving an incidence of 14.3/1,000 births or a
BIRTH PREVALENCE OF 1 IN 70,
i.e. 1 out of every 70 babies born in the Kinta District
which include the Bukit Merah village
has a with a major birth defect !
Since Bukit Merah village has a population of 11,000
we would expect to have 157 people with birth defects in
this village. Granted that babies with major birth defects
are prone to have a shorter life span, even if their life
span is half that of a normal person, we should expect
to find about 78 people with a major congenital defect
in Bukit Merah.
SO IT WOULD NOT BE DIFFICULT FOR THE ANTI-
LYNAS FOLKS TO FIND A COUPLE OF UNFORTUNATE
SOULS WITH CONGENITAL DEFECTS and blame it on
the radiation ! ! ! ;)

ReplyDeleteRADIOACTIVE WASTE
♥-♥-♥-CANCER AND LOW DOSE RADIATION of < 100 mSv.
After decades of intensive studies, UNSCEAR ( United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation) now
ADMITS THAT THEY WERE WRONG TO IMPLY THAT THERE IS NO SAFE LEVEL OF RADIATION with regards to cancer !
There IS a safe level and that is,
ACUTE RADIATION DOSES LESS THAN ABOUT 10 rem (100 mSv ) per year and chronic annual radiation doses of less than 200 mSv ARE SAFE.
Have a look at this link:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/jamesconca/2013/01/11/like-weve-been-saying-radiation-is-not-a-big-deal/
Excerpts of Article in Forbes:
"UNSCEAR (United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation) HAS FINALLY ADMITTED THAT WE CAN'T USE THE LNT (Linear No Threshold) HYPOTHESIS TO PREDICT CANCER FROM LOW DOSES OF RADIATION."
What this mean is that the probability of a small dose of radiation causing cancer is non-existent.
It also means the calculation of actual risk of cancer from radiation is a lot more complicated, since it becomes more than just multiplying.
The dose distribution is also important (whether it is all at once or over a prolonged period of time the dose occurs).
Since the LNT hypothesis does not apply to low radiation doses, it is not supported by single event dosages of less than 100 mSv or by chronic annual dose levels of 200 mSv.
Above such dose rates there do appear to be small increases in cancer, but the relationship is not linear until much higher doses occurs.
At levels of more than 500 mSv per event the relationship appears to be more or less linear.
It can be concluded that acute one time exposure to 100 mSv does not result in an increase in the probability of cancer and that acute one time doses of more than 100 mSv but less than 250 mSv may or may not result in a minuscule increase in lifetime cancer risk, depending on the circumstances, and as such can be reasonably ignored.
OTHER ADVERSE EFFECTS OF RADIATION
♥ Congenital Defects:
Study by scientists at John Hopkins University published in 1988 by American Journal of Epidemiology, concluded that, their study plus the fact that there is NO CONGENITAL DEFECTS DEMONSTRATED IN STUDIES ON THE ATOMIC BOMB SURVIVORS IN HIROSHIMA AND NAGASAKI, suggests that
LOW DOSE RADIATION CANNOT CAUSE CONGENITAL DEFECTS.
Some studies however, suggest that an acute single event dose of > 250 mSv can result in a small increase in birth defects, although it is more likely to result in abortions than term births of individuals with major birth defects.
♥ Cataracts:
Acute exposure to 1,000 to 2,000 mSv to the eye can cause cataracts.
In chronic exposure, the total dose may need to be up to about 8,000 mSv before there is a danger of cataract formation.
The result of chronic exposure to lower levels of radiation is much less understood, because cataracts are common in older individuals to begin with.
♥ Infertility
An acute dose of 150 mSv to the testes can cause temporary infertility in males but would not result in long term effects. A similar dose may cause a temporary reduction in egg viability in females. Acute single doses greater than 1,000 mSv can result in long term infertility.
♥ Hair Loss:
This is seem mostly in patients who are put on high dose radiotherapy and is usually temporary in nature.
♥ Chronic effects on the glands:
Very high dose radiation used on patients undergoing radiotherapy may develop loss of secretion from the salivary, mucus and other glands in the body, causing membranes to become dry or irritated.
