About cium tangan

Someone salam and kissed my hand earlier today.

It was out of respect.

However, I'm not comfortable with it.

I would prefer a hug.

That's just the way I am.

Actually, I always tried to avoid the "cium tangan" thing as much as I can.

But that's difficult in the Malay side of my family.

I still do it with the elders in the family as I feel that I have to do it as a show of respect, just like what the person who did it to me this morning.

It is part of adab Melayu.

Outside the family, I really tried to avoid doing it.

Nonetheless, throughout my adult life, there were a few occasions when I did it to those who are not elders in my family.

As far as I remember, they are all members of the royalty, except one.

1. The late Raja of Perlis  Tuanku Syed Harun Putra ibni Almarhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail
- several times at official functions in Istana Arau and during a visit to Istana Repoh, Kangar.

2. Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Ismail Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar Al-Haj,
 - several times during visits to Istana Pasir Pelangi, Johor Baru. All when the Sultan was still the Tunku Mahkota, except once after he became the Ruler.

3. The late Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Al-Haj Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Al-Haj
 - Only once. I visited him with a few other people at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore where he was warded. I was the last in the group who salam and kissed his hand. He died a few days later.

4. Tengku Mahkota Pahang, Tengku Abdullah ibni Sultan Ahmad Shah
 - several times during visits to his home at Istana Sultan Abdul Aziz, Kuantan and once when I bumped into him when his helicopter landed near Temerloh RnR of the East Coast Highway to visit flood victims sheltered there.

5. Former Johor Menteri Besar TS Abdul Ghani Othman - The only non-royalty.

I did it only once but it was in public. I don't really know what got into me that I did it. It was at the M Suites Hotel and Ghani had just announced the list of BN candidates for the GE13. I think I was overwhelmed at that time when he said he was contesting against DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang at the Chinese majority Gelang Patah. It was his ultimate sacrifice for Umno, contesting to lose at the end of his political career trying to stop the unstoppable Chinese tsunami at that time. We met again after that but I just salam him like normal only. No more cium tangan.

That's about it.

Really. I have never even kissed the hand of PM DS Najib Razak or elder statesman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

i just shook hands with them a couple of times that I met them.

Well, that's all for today.

Just something light, okay.

No mood to write about all those messy stuff that's been going on the past few days.

Here, also enjoy this nice Sunday song,

Cheers.

  2. Annie,

    Speaking of 'contact' subject...

Too much hoo-hah about Yuna and Usher hugging:

    More sane opinion...

'Sudahla korang ni…bukan senang nak buat apa dia buat…kau dgn aku ni pun lum tentu boleh…bukan dia nak sgt hug cium…mmgla tak boleh tapi nak kena faham dia dah luar negara peringkat antarabangsa…mmg tak mudah bekerja overseas ni pelan2 baru org asing faham…patutnye korang bangga dgn si Yuna ni org msia…wlaupun aku bukan org msia aku bangga kot dgn budak ni…cubala faham sikit adakalanya kita yg bukak column gossipni lebih berdosa dari dia.'

Too much hypocrisy when we pick on these little things which have no niat jahat, then we ignore cases like YAPEIM...

    Priorities salah pulak.

    1. hypocrisy lagi........bacalah:

"PAS has echoed Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil in cautioning against foreigners meddling in matters related to 1MDB.

All quarters should not allow any room for foreigners to intervene our affairs, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, as reported by Mingguan Malaysia today.

He also opined that 1MDB should be probed by Malaysians rather than foreigners.

"What is important is the case should be probed fairly and transparently by our own people. Do not go to the extent that others can meddle in our business. It is our own fault if this happens.”

      Ehhhh, kawan.

THE SEVEN COUNTRIES ARE INVESTIGATING VIOLATIONS OF THEIR OWN LAWS.

      NOT MALAYSIAN LAWS.

      Hang x faham ke?

PAS should stick to issues that it understands, like Selena Gomez and supporting corruption.

      PAS just loves corruption.

  4. Annie ... According to traditional folklore the act of cium tangan really started when someone wanted to know what food was being prepared by the host of the house he/she was visiting on Hari Raya day without seemingly being too inquisitive by asking guests who are leaving what food they have had. So one diplomatic way is to cium tangan. If it smells of briani then there is briani .Like wise for various type of rendangs, serunding and what have you on Hari Raya day/month. Unfortunately if the hand smells squeaky clean then you are in trouble for the person whom you have ciumed tangan must be adept at washing his hand to get rid of any lingering scent of food. Tak dapek den nolong yo! Could there be some truth in that folklore ?

  5. Dear Annie, out of curiosity, just what was the nature of your business with all those personalities you mentioned above?

And to state that you met many of them not once, but multiple times.

Just what is your job, if you don't mind me asking.

    In the family business?

Your article has really piqued my curiosity, so please pardon me for being nosey and personal.

On the subject of hand-kissing, I would agree if it is confined to kissing the hands of our parents and other elderly relatives as a mark of respect.

Beyond that I would go as far as kissing the hands of our teachers.

That's it. No to YBs, MBs, Menteris and even DPMs or PMs.

No to hand-kissing, no to grovelling.

That would be plain bodeking or as the the omputihs would say, apple-polishing.

And being obsequious or to ingratiate yourself that way to anyone is utterly demeaning.

Sadly that is the state many of our so-called leaders at grassroot, state and federal levels is in.

Totally devoid of integrity, dignity, responsibilty, honesty, respect and self-worth.

Sorry to paint such a bleak picture of the situation we find ourselves in presently.

We brought this situation upon ourselves, we allowed it to happen even when we know how revolting it is.

Sheesh... I have got to stop being so pessimistic.

    Cheerio.

  6. Hi Annie, You say you have no mood to write all those messy stuff. How convenient of you.
Many in the world are laughing at us following the DoJ revelations.
I was born before Merdeka and never in my lifetime have I seen such shame brought to our country by leaders on whom we have placed so much trust.
Yes, we were ridiculed when we chased and fired at the hordes of Vietnamese boat people who landed on our shores. TDM took a tough stance then and we were seen a less humanitarian nation.
Many ridiculed us then but we were not ashamed or hurt.

As I wrote earlier, this exposure is just the start.More inflicting and incriminating matters will be laid bare.Bit by bit they will expose the fraud.Kinda slow death for the Official One.Just like being slashed by a sharp blade every hour. Sakit and sedih with more blades from Swiitzerland,UK,HK.and Singapore.
Too bad, Obama appears to be busy packing his wares for his pending exit from White House. He's so busy that he has forgotten completely about his golfing buddies and Hawaii beaches.
Dahlan, Azalina, Zakarshi, Zahidi, Hisamuddin, Ismail Sabri, can do a huge favor to help their kawan. Please lah ask the Saudi King/Prince living or dead, to make a fresh statement about the donations sekarang.Fresh press release. Then we can throw mud at AG Lynch's face. Also no need to be confused over civil and criminal steps.

We can then know who among the three (DoJ,Official One or Saudi Donor) has been lying

Common Annie...there's an awful lot to write to help Malaysians think and identify the broad day light robbers.

    3. The US Government will hold all of that property — the real estate, the paintings, the rights to “Wolf of Wall Street,” etc. IN CUSTODY (or trust) on behalf of the people of Malaysia, from whom the money was stolen. But — the assets will NOT belong to the US Government.

As the US Attorney General Loretta Lynch and the others pointed out, the money was stolen from the people of Malaysia. The assets belong to them. (How ironic that the US Attorney General seems to care more about this thievery than the Malaysian Attorney General does…)

In the meantime the US Government will rent out Aziz’s condo in NYC and his Beverly Hills house. They will take over the management of the hotels in New York and Beverly Hills that were purchased with the stolen money. The US Government will collect the profits from all future sales of the DVDs and TV rights of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” The Monet and Van Gogh paintings will go on exhibition somewhere. And so on. And all of that profit will be held by the US Government for the Malaysian people.

Young Aziz will be homeless. In order to save itself and the films it has in production (including a new film about George Washington, starring Leonardo Dicaprio), Red Granite Pictures will get rid of him. So Aziz will be jobless, too.

    Maknanya mereka ADA BUKTI.

So what ?

  10. From an international viewpoint, this is the end of Najib. He is an international pariah. He is a crook. He is a fraud. The world will want nothing to do with him. He will not be welcome anywhere. People will be embarrassed to be seen with him, to shake his hand, to be photographed with him.

As for Rosmah, her credit at Hermes and Tiffany’s and elsewhere will be cut off. Now those luxury stores know that the money was not hers. It was stolen from the Malaysian people, and they do not want to be complicit. They have their own reputations to protect.

That is how the world will react. But how will the Malaysian people react? Will Najib get away with this, back in Malaysia?

I fear that the answer is yes. If so, it means that Malaysia is now in Mugabe-Land.

The IGP says that the US Government never asked for cooperation from the Malaysian Government in their investigation. Yet both the MACC and the FBI have said that they cooperated with each other in the investigation. The IGP knows the truth

  11. Regarding PAS statement's that US should not meddle in our country affairs, the kambing in my kampung has been laughing non-stop the whole day after reading their statement.

US is prosecuting against parties that committed crimes in their country just like Malaysia prosecutes the foreigners for various offences like the Indon, Bangla etc.So does that mean Malaysia is interfering with the affairs of Indonesia and Bangladesh by prosecuting their citizens that commited crimes in our country?

I do not know what name is suitable for PAS-morons, idiots, donkeys or monkeys.Or maybe all of them. But i rather call them satan because they know the truth but since some of them had benefited from the 1MDB loot, they are indebted to protect the criminal that gave them some of the loot. And only satans are involved in all the wrongful acts.
