  1. Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Located in the middle of India Ocean. 5 hour flight from Perth, Australia. There were two major parts of the islands. Home island consists of Malay Muslim majority and on the Western island part dominated by beer loving Westerners mostly Australians.

They live side by side peacefully. Respecting each other culture, religion and way of life. Young Cocos islanders most of them are bilingual. They speak both Malay and English. Their Malay more like Sabahan Malay and their English laced with thick Australian accent. If you want to see a a Malay speak English with an Australian twang, you can find it here. In fact plenty of them especially the tudung clad young women.

  2. There is a video on youtube showing Ramadhan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrated by Malay community on the Cocos Islands. I was suprised that they played songs from Malaysia in their Raya celebration!..

Malaysian songs are extremely popular on Cocos islands. I don’t know why. In terms of geography, they’re closer to Sri Lanka and Australia than Indonesia. Especially Malaysian songs from the 90s. If you live on the islands, they keep blasting out tunes from Iklim, Ukays, Slam and Siti Nurhaliza. It’s like living in Malaysia..

  3. There is an island in the South China Sea called Natuna islands. The islanders speak Malay dialect with thick Terengganu accent. Even the food which popular with the people on the islands are the food which closely associated with Terengganu such as nasi dagang, keropok lekor, sata and pulut panggang. They both share the same language, culture and lifestyle especially among the seafarers.

The islands are quite close to Johor waters via Mersing. They islands once under the control of the Johor Sultanate, hundred of years ago but now they belong to Indonesia government. The islands actually are closer to Malaysia either to Johor side or the Borneo rather than Indonesia but they belong to Indonesia.

The Indonesian government recently beef up the security on the islands. They protect the islands fiercely especially after China also stake their claim on the island under their nine-dash line.

Annie has zero interest in these issues.

She is 100% pro-corruption, as long as the corruption was committed by Umgnok.

  11. Annie, the White Australian policy has been abolished in Australia decades ago. Australia is officially a multi cultural country and adopts meritocracy in all official matters. Most importantly they are least corrupt unlike our country under the previous administration.

Malaysia too lah..Vietnamse boat people, Myanmmar Rohingya, Myanmmar Chin, Uighur, Syrian, Sri Lanka Tamil, Phillipine Sulu etc etc.In fact we welcome them to reside in this country like we welcome the Chinese and Indian immigrants before this and no stupid act like Chinese Exclusion Act that was imposed to immigrants in USA and Australia.

  12. The Malays in Coco Island, originally are seafaring people of Bugis decendent. My great grandfather on my mom's side, was one of them. He went to Broom as a peral diver but he did not settle down there. On my father's side, my great grandfather sailed around the world on the commercial ships from S'por. So, when I watched the filem PULANG the movie, I was looking at the life of my great grandmother when she was left pregnent by my great grandfahter. My great grand father sailed around the world including America and ended up in Liverpool. His remains is buried at Liverpool. His children by his British wife, had migrated to America, informed by the Malay Club community at Jermey Street, Liverpool when we went there, searching for him. No doubt PULANG the movie made people cry at the end of it but had it been my grandma's ending, it would flood the theater with tears with her last dying breath: "Mat...mat...jangan tinggalkan aku..........".
Hidupnya sungguh menderita as a rubber tapper to bring up her two children. Harga getah in those years was only 2 cts per kati. So much different from the life of today eventhoug we are free of GST!!!

  13. Australia may not be corrupted like here but racism do exist there. If you live long enough there you will experience things like overt or subtle racism from the white community and in extreme cases physical attacks. The white Australia policy was only removed in 1973.

  16. Tq for the video. Some countries treat the migrant better and some do not. i suppose the logical sequence would be if in where discriminatory practises are condoned such as no land ownership, no job opportunities, no business opportunities, no schooling then it would impossible for the migrant to prosper. Such wicked and evil government ehh

  18. Hi Annie
I've seen this cocos malay video before, but it's nice to see it once again. Subtle racism and discrimination is real and it happened everywhere, even in so called true meritocracy system. Biarlah jadi pengajaran utk orang melayu di sini.
