Shahidan is right

This is a comment from my last post,

Annie

Where is Zahid?

The Perlis crisis has dragged on for one month.

He seems to have lost his Jawa garangness.

Even Umno MTU members are saying this Perlis crisis is a huge embarrassment to the party.

Is Zahid on holiday?

Has he just given up completely?

Honestly, I'm not interested in where or what Zahid is doing.

At the moment, I'm just hoping for him to make way for Hishammuddin and KJ to lead the party.

I got nothing personal against Zahid but I think he should shoulder the same amount of responsibility as Najib for BN's defeat in GE14.

And I don't like the people in his team.

Anyway, that's not what I want to write about for this post.

I actually want to write a bit about Perlis.

I knew Shahidan Kassim quite well when I was living in Perlis for a few years. He was still the MB at that time.

I also met Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullai many times when I was there,

Between them, I have to say that I like the Raja of Perlis better. He is nice.

Shahidan on the other hand was rather abrasive and he actually didn't like me very much. But of course, I didn't like him that much either.

For the record, I didn't really like his supposed to be MB brother Ismail too. For one thing, the guy is even less handsome than Shahidan.

But that's at a personal level.

As to what was referred to as the "Perlis crisis", despite my dislike of him, I actually agree with Shahidan that the Perlis palace shouldn't interfere in deciding who should be MB.

The Umno supreme council members who criticised him over the matter didn't know what they were talking about.

It should be the right of the majority in the state legislature to decide who should lead the administration of the state.

The state legislature is representing the rakyat and the palace must respect that.

The will of the people should be more powerful than the will of the Sultan or Raja.

Ours is constitutional monarchy, not absolute monarchy.

The practice of the palace dictating who should be the MB and how the MB should do his work must stop.

I believe Dr Mahathir would agree to this.

A state government could become so lame because of palace interference.

A case in point is my home state Johor.

Everyone knows what happened in Johor over the past five years.

No need for me to write more and risk the Sedition Act, okay.

Here is one of the most effective PH campaign pictures for Johor;

I wonder what the new Johor PH government is going to do about this.
The result is that Umno being thrashed in its own birthplace in GE14.

It was not just because of hate for Najib in Johor, okay.

Some may argue that the Sultan and Raja know best and they are protectors of rakyat.

I disagree.

For me, rakyat know best and they can protect themselves.

If an MB and his state government screwed up, it's the people who should kick them out, and not anyone else.

The same with PM and the federal government.

Like in GE14.

That's democracy.

  3. Annie,

    One point however:

Zahid Hamidi is the most popular leader among Umno grassroots by far.

There was a survey done on this some time ago. I think the results would be much the same today.

Umno has 3 million members and the "totok" members see KJ as far too liberal and also don't trust him. They don't like H2O much either.

I think Zahid will not step aside, however I find his lack of leadership currently very puzzling.

I am not discounting the theory that he is talking to Anwar.

What was that night visit about, if not for "discussions"?

    1. GE14 proves that being popular among Umno members is not good enough. If Umno members want to continue with a leader that they like but rakyat hate, then their party is really dead. I will comment on the Zahid-Anwar combo later.

    2. You are right.

However, I think in Najib's case it was because the top leadership wanted to protect him at all costs (for selfish reasons), while the grassroots were far more worried about what keeping Najib would cost the party.

Zahid in reputation terms may still have quite solid support among grassroots.

It would be very interesting to survey Umno grassroots to see how much real support Najib had (though it's a pointless exercise now, of course.)

You're correct, but then Shahidan is blatantly trying to install a puppet.

Same as when Anwar tried to ram Kak Wan into the Selangor MB seat via his stupid "Kacang Move".

I have sympathy with both Raja of Perlis and Sultan od Selangor here.

If they know they are being forced to accept a puppet, then what should they do?

Yes, wait for another round of people's mandate but an MB can screw up a state big time while waiting.

Shahidan's intentions here are all too clear.

    1. Shahidan wants to instal a puppet is besides the point. That's the rakyat's choice per constitution for better or worse. Again, that's democracy at work.

    2. It's true, but as I said, "wait for another round of people's mandate but an MB can screw up a state big time while waiting."

If the ruler of a state knows that the person is not really the best candidate, they will feel a bit reluctant.

Anyway the Perlis mess needs to come to a firm conclusion, one way or another.

    3. Its obvious that Perlis and Pahang are the last bastion for UMNO to squeeze whatever's left of Rakyats' coffer to revive/rejuvenate the Party.
How else are they going to revive without money?

After all, the 'candu' from having their 2 former President as PM and Finance Minister at the same time since 2003, is not easy to get rid of.

Therefore the Raja of Perlis must have seen this coming... through Shahidan's brother as MB.

  7. I feel uncomfortable looking at 2 DAP leaders storming MOF right after Guan Eng appointed as minister. Then immediately being granted access to Treasury sensitive files and infos without official appointment in place. Dia ingat MOF bapak dia punya ka?

After a while, only then these two declared themselves as special officers sans salary to minister of finance (The announcement came from themselves, not from MOF. Banyak cantik muka..). That’s not the way to do it in the government. You have to go through some screenings before being granted access to confidential info in the government.

Even if Guan Eng does needs help and lacking faith in senior officers around him, go proper way lah. You are in government now. Not in the opposition. You are bound by General Orders, Circulars, rules and regulations. Yo can’t just show up and said ‘I want to see the files? Can you get this numbers for me? Where can get I 1MDB figures?’. It doesn’t work that way. It’s just rude and disrespectful. Especially to government officers and staffers at MOF.

This mannerless behaviour is unbecoming of newly minted minister of finance. If you’re so desperate to bring your own people, please do it proper way la. Not parachute them in from the rooftop. It seemed crass and crude.

If you need immediate help, get KSN to immediately appointed them as your staffers either as political secretary, private secretary or special officers. With all the proper screening, secrecy oath, appointment letters and all that.

Only then you can make yourself like home at MOF. Surrounded by your trusted lieutenant. Being granted access to all those classified files and info.

All these years these files were kept in KIVmode
Successful applicants were beaming with joy on that days and some even took selfie with the MB

  9. Annie,

I criticize you a lot before but I do agree with you this time.

The people had given their mandate and that mandate has to be respected.

There is a rumor that something similar is brewing up at the federal level. Normally I do not pay attention too much to ostb blog but Kadir Jasin do not bring up the matter if it do not require attention.

I think the people need to know when the government that the people given a mandate is being questions by others. The mandate of the people is protected by our constitution.

I agree with you Annie, if the government that people elected is not working for the people regardless of BN or PH, then just throw them out in the next GE.

But, the mandate of the people, the right of the people and the constitution have to be protected.

  11. Even if what the Raja did is against the state’s constitution, as Azlan didn’t command the confidence of the majority of the assembly, but Shahidan and his ‘durhaka’ assemblymen really don’t have any other way other than submit the Sultan’s wish.

This is not an anomaly. We had a lot cases like this happened before. In the end, the Ruler prevailed. We are not living in the 90’s under maverick dictatorship anymore. This is a new era. If the assemblymen wish to put up a fight, it’s going to be bloody. Won’t be good to anyone.

We had had before with Idris Jusoh in Terengganu. Shahidan himself in Perlis. Wan Azizah in Selangor. All eventually submitted to Royal wishes. That’s the way to end the crisis.

Even now in Johor, Osman Sapian was not PH choice for the post of MB, but the Johor ruler wanted him. PH assemblymen accepted the decision as they didn’t want to create a crisis. That’s the way to go.

An MB has to take oath before the Ruler. If the Ruler doesn’t to do it, there’ll gonna be no MB. As simple as that. The longer the crisis drag on, the more the people of Perlis will suffer. The well being of the rakyat is much more important than the egos of selected few. The rakyat come first and foremost.

  15. Like i said before. This is power play between the two. It had nothing to do with the rakyat.

Where were the royals when najib and his co stole money from the people ?

And then theres the stunt with delay appointment of the pm. Wht happen to the rest of cabinet ministers ? The supposedly religious one ? Wht happen to him ?

We should just mind our own bussines and let them hit it out between the two.

At least i agree with ur last sentence. The rakyat themselves know how best to protect themselves.

Well, with a new government in Putrajaya, perhaps we could have bi-partisan support for some more changes to our Federal Constitution to reflect the will of the rakyat?
