Khaled in Kluang and the importance of grassroots work

My friend in Kota Iskandar told me earlier this morning that Johor MB DS Mohamed Khaled Nordin is visiting my hometown Kluang today.

It's part of his state-wide tour for what I was told to be preparations for the coming general election as I highlighted here,

Rushing to GE14

Curious to know what Khaled will be doing there, I asked my friend to send me the itineraries.

So, she sent me this,

I'm quite sure Khaled will have talks and briefing on the coming general election with BN and Umno people in Kluang after completing the official visit.

My friend also sent me this picture from the first stop at Sekolah Agama Seri Kampung Tengah 2

It's nice and reminded me of my younger days when I attended the Sekolah Agama Johor where I learnt more about Islam as well as read and write Jawi.

I used to be quite proficient in Jawi and could even do shorthand writing in it. Now very rusty already la due to lack of practice.

However, back then, my sekolah agama didn't have air-conditioning  or what looks like an internet or Astro receiver disc like in the picture.

Maybe now the sekolah agama are more changgih :)

Anyway, the parliamentary constituency visit doesn't look as detailed as that done by Khaled's predecessor TS Abdul Ghani Othman who was being more micro by repeatedly visiting the numerous balloting areas in preparation for the last general election.

Still, I think what Khaled and his team are doing is good enough as it is.

I shouldn't be comparing Khaled with Ghani too much as they are of different standards altogether.

I think it's good for Johor BN and Umno that Khaled is now on the ground as that's where it all matters for them to win support for the coming polls.

I always believe that the fight is actually on the ground rather than the stupid exchanges of accusations and insults in the social media or other propaganda outlets.

The side which is more grounded and closer to the rakyat will win.

That has always been the case.

That's how BN and Umno won all the general elections since Merdeka despite their flaws and weaknesses.

The opposition could not possibly beat them by mere rethorics as proven in the past.

As long as BN and Umno leaders still care to go down to the ground and do the necessary for the people like what Khaled is trying to do in Kluang today, the opposition will have to continue to struggle to justify their accusations against the government.

Merely playing politics may win some extra votes but it would not on its own ensure victory.

Being able to be there for the rakyat and doing the right things directly for them are more important than anything else.

If the opposition hopes to ever beat BN and Umno, they need to do or seem to be doing more work on the ground and be close to the people instead of just talking about this and that.

As Ghani once told his people during the campaign for GE13, no matter how bad were the sentiments caused by national issues, if they can still take care of the people at the grassroots level, the battle could still be won.

"Take care of the people at the grassroots level"? How? By handing out cash? By requiring them to get a good education? By making sure they have access to good jobs (foreign investments?) instead of running off to cari makan in Singapore?

Singapore is planning for economic restructuring, investing in new technologies, equipping the workforce to be employed in new areas of growth etc.

In Johor where got any of the above?

"Taking care of the grassroots"? Yeah, right...

  2. Helping grassroots or pulling grassroots?

    Rural Malay poverty:

The main cause of rural poverty is,

    (1) Unemployment

    (2) The reality of undocumented foreign workers and the resulting lowering of wages and job opportunity

    (3) The feudalistic culture which dominates aid programmes - “Unfortunately, the manner in which this aid is given is opaque. The rural poor, the target population, are not informed of the actual allocation for the project in their kampong, its actual specifications, the quantum of the contracts awarded, etc. The poor communities are not in any position to monitor the execution of these projects.

“In the absence of proper checks and balances, officers from the ministry concerned, the local district officer and his staff, the politically connected contractors and the local Umno assemblyperson and Member of Parliament collectively siphon off a significant portion of the funds allocated. This portion can come up to 50 percent of the actual sum allocated.”

    Pura2 caring lah.

So why do the "rural poor" stoically accept the "status quo"?

Don't they want better lives for their children & children's children instead of being perpetually beholden to the government for handouts?

Isn't the education system supposed to fix this?

Or is it all "short-term-ism" - kicking the can down the road for subsequent generations to worry about?

      Brilliantly cynical!!

  3. Without Najib... and his 1MDB-Jho Low under RCI, then I can say BN would stand a better chance of winning GE14?

What if DoJ's Assets Forfeiture Initiative comes before GE14?
Or... the Swiss' AG commence legal proceeding on 1MDB's money laundering without Malaysian AG's MLA ... or Singapore decided to sent out an Interpol arrest warrant for Jho Low.

Would that be OK for UMNO-Najib or BN?

  7. Hence, Why I respect and admire the lat King Bhumibol. I watched the program on History Channal 555 several times. The program really touched my heart that I keep watching it several times. No wonder the people of Thailand love him so much. He is really a king yang berjiwa rakyat!

    What makes King Bhumibol popular
•Royal Patronage - He spent the majority of his time during his working years on projects to improve the life of the poorest of people within Thailand. Notable projects include the Royal Project Foundation in Chiang Mai, Shrimp farm aerators and rain cloud seeding technologies.
•Medicine - Promoting rural medical care to villages that lack sufficient access to medicine. His daughter Sirindhorn - Wikipedia now operates the majority of the medical projects
•Music - He was a jazz musician. A notable discography includes H. M. Blues (Hungry Men’s Blues). This includes various compositions written by King Bhumibol and his son Vajiralongkorn - Wikipedia
•Photographer - He was constantly with his camera during his time visiting regions within Thailand. This created a large body of documentation that was useful to the operations of the projects.
•Sports - His majesty was an avid sailor. This lead to projects to promote sports among the Thai people in order to maintain health and wellness. 'King of Sports' mourned

His majesty has also won the United Nations Development Programme’s inaugural Human Development Lifetime Achievement Award. THAI KING’S DEVELOPMENT AGENDA, VISIONARY THINKING INSPIRATION TO PEOPLE EVERYWHERE, SAYS SECRETARY-GENERAL TO BANGKOK PANEL

  8. Annie,

//I asked my friend to send me the itineraries.//

Quite an itinerary, lots of hit-and-runs there.

Anybody would think that an election is about to happen, don't you think? :)

//grounded and closer to the rakyat//

//That's how BN and Umno won all the general elections since Merdeka despite their flaws and weaknesses//

Come on, we all know that BN and UMNO have won every general election since Merdeka with money, OK?

Today, more and more of the rakyat know where that money is coming from.

//Being able to be there for the rakyat and doing the right things directly for them are more important than anything else//

Any politician who can do that will win - not just BN or the Opposition.

Of cos, like most politically dysfunctional countries, in Malaysia, the Opposition is at a distinct disadvantage trying to help the rakyat in many areas as we do not have a level playing field.

// if ...{BN}... can still take care of the people at the grassroots level, the battle could still be won//

    Very true.

But from my personal observations, this seems to happen only in pockets here and there.

And those pockets seem to be shrinking.

Maybe it is just a phenomena around my kampung, I don't know.

  11. Yup, BN is gearing up for the next election. That is the only reason that could explain the PM's recent announcement on PR1MA, i.e. PR1MA house owner can sell their units after 5 yrs instead of 10. It makes me so pissed off. These houses are subsidised using taxpayers money; it shouldn't not be used as a means of making money by those who received the subsidy.

This government is always flip flopping. Don't they discuss long term policies during their cabinet mtgs??? Sekejap nak cut foreign workers, lepas tu all the businesses complained & meet the PM, policy got rescinded. I think the real reason the govn did this flip flopping is to show some muscles and not so subtly remind the business communities who is the boss.

I am so sick of this govn that I'm ready to pejam mata and just tick the opposition ath the ballot box!

Show it by ACTION not mere words. Most of the leased Reserve Melayu land has only 30-35 years left, especially in JOHORE BAHARU, after that, no more MALAY RESERVE mungkin bertukar jadi PRC RESERVE. Hehehehe.......!!!!!!

Has anybody heard anything about the Malaysian investigations into 1MDB?

      Not me.

I don't even know if there are any Malaysian investigations at all into 1MDB.

I only know that nobody is guilty of anything in 1MDB other than maybe someone was charged with leaking information on 1MDB, i.e. whistleblowing.

So, forget about anybody going to jail in Malaysia for 1MDB for the time being.

Only other countries are interested in 1MDB and people are going to jail in those countries, but that is a different story.

  20. From the comments at:

    http://kadirjasin.blogspot.my/2017/01/china-bantu-kita-kawal-sempadan.html?m=1#comment-form

    "KADIR JASIN 4:18 PM
    Esteemed debaters and visitor,

    1. Those of us who are Malaysians and care about our country, have to make greater efforts to understand the "new China".

    2. It is hard to assume that neither Najib nor Zahid is unware of China’s expansionary policy.

    3. If they do not, I hope our defence experts and military leadership do because some of the things that Najib and Zahid are doing today could make us an easy target of China’s new defence doctrine.

    4. A Chinese defense white paper released on 26 May 2015, among other things, outlined a new military strategy that emphasizes a more “active defense posture” and a greater Chinese naval presence farther from China’s shores.

    5. It was the ninth such paper to be published since 1998, but the first to focus exclusively on strategy.

    6. The principal doctrine of the Chinese military appears to be unaltered: winning local wars under conditions of informationization. Thus, network-centric warfare and the growing informatization of the battlefield are seen as particularly important for the PLA’s “preparation for military struggle (PMS).”

    7. “The world revolution in military affairs (RMA) is proceeding to a new stage. Long-range, precise, smart, stealthy and unmanned weapons and equipment are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Outer space and cyber space have become new commanding heights in strategic competition among all parties,” the paper notes.

    8. With the tensions in the North and South China over territorial claims, the doctrine places a premium on maritime combat readiness. It says:
In line with the evolving form of war and national security situation, the basic point for PMS will be placed on winning informationized local wars, highlighting maritime military struggle and maritime PMS.

    9. The paper speaks about China’s aspirations towards a blue-water navy and an increased Chinese naval presence outside territorial waters:
In line with the strategic requirement of offshore waters defense and open seas protection, the PLA Navy (PLAN) will gradually shift its focus from “offshore waters defense” to the combination of “offshore waters defense” with “open seas protection,” and build a combined, multi-functional and efficient marine combat force structure. The PLAN will enhance its capabilities for strategic deterrence and counterattack, maritime maneuvers, joint operations at sea, comprehensive defense and comprehensive support.

    10. Unless we are stupid or have sold our souls to China we must not discount the likelihood of China using all possible means, including economic enslavement and espionage, to neutralise its neighbours.

    11. Buying Chinese military equipment and border surveillance equipment increases China’s foothold in our country. And having hundreds of thousands Chinese visiting, studying, working and staying in Malaysia makes its preparation for military struggle (PMS) easier.

    Wallahuaklam."

He has made the effort to enlighten us. The least we could do is think about it. Just like Tun, with due respect, he is also an 'old man'. Boleh saja relax buat benda yang tak ada controversial. But he bothers. Why? He tak ada anak pun lined up in the political horizon. Kena bayar? Well if true he certainly is worth it because he made effort to make it worth reading, for us to mull over.
