DAP should have defended Wan Hamidi

I sincerely felt sorry for Wan Hamidi when I read this,

I was initially offered Bernama

CEO post, now it's not happening

This is the full Facebook post by Wan Hamidi that led to the story;

After being a target of lies, unfair condemnations and personal attacks for quite some time, I have been informed that I would NOT be appointed as the Bernama CEO. This is despite being initially offered, persuaded and convinced to accept this job at the national news agency.

My apologies but I won’t be replying to any queries. So please don’t waste your time trying to message me or call me about this. Now is not the time, sorry.

If you’re really want to know, perhaps you should you ask the Bernama Board or the Cabinet Minister(s), or those people and racial groups including some media and news portals that hate DAP. Perhaps they know more.

For those who didn’t know me (including those who had vilified me) let me share with you this info - I have 30 years’ experience in journalism and communications. I have worked with Berita Harian, The Star, The Sun, Straits Times Singapore, New Straits Times, and The Malaysian Insider, as well as DAP’s Rocket Publications.

I also had a stint with the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur as its media relations advisor.  The last position I held was Deputy Director for Research for Social Advancement (REFSA), a progressive think tank.

I actually believe in free press and freedom of expression, although we know that in the Malaysian context, it's easier said than done. But we must never give up.

Despite not being active in the mainstream media in recent years, I continue to write as columnist for news portals Malaysiakini and The Malaysian Insight. I have also written and edited some books.

For those who're wondering, I actually believe in free press and freedom of expression, although we know that in the Malaysian context, it's easier said than done. But we must never give up. We must keep on moving. So there.

Happy Deepavali and Salam Perjuangan!

WAN HAMIDI HAMID

I think it took quite a bit of effort for Wan Hamidi to write that FB post.

After all, the guy, as I know him, is rather quiet and unassuming despite his friendly demeanour.

It's a bit out of character that he pour out his feeling like that.

I guess the pressure was quite tremendous for him to bear.

For me, it's particularly unfair to Wan Hamidi because the story of him becoming the Bernama CEO had been going around for almost two months.

Why was he offered the job in the first place and by who?

It's highly likely because DAP wanted to reward him for his services to the party and that it's probably Gobind himself, as Information Minister who made the offer.

If so, I actually have no problem with it because it's only right that DAP, now in power, rewards him with such a post.

After all, I know that the guy had gone all out for his party. Wan Hamidi is a true DAP idealist, who really believes in the cause.

I don't know exactly how much DAP paid him as the editor of Rocket, but I'm quite sure it's not much.

He's driving a rather old looking Proton Saga, okay.

So, really, I'm okay with him being the Bernama CEO and earn a bit more money.

After all, it's by right a post not related to Bernama's editorial policies.

Even if it does, I do believe him when he wrote this;

I actually believe in free press and freedom of expression, although we know that in the Malaysian context, it's easier said than done. But we must never give up.

Knowing him, I think Wan Hamidi would try to keep Bernama free from political interference the same way I believe others would try to do as I highlighted in this previous post,

I know, he's a DAP operative, but I think he still have the idealism to do the right thing, especially when it comes to journalism.

Well, for one thing, I'm quite sure that Wan Hamidi is better when it comes to journalism than those who attacked him such as former information minister Rais Yatim who is now a Pribumi Bersatu strongman.

Yes, I still remember Rais' crackdown on bloggers when he was the minister. Their homes were raided and laptops seized.

And before you all start commenting on this, bear in mind that what happened to Wan Hamidi has nothing to do with Umno/BN.

Some of them did make noises about it but they have no power to stop Wan Hamidi's appointment, okay.

The ones who have the power to decide on this matter are Pakatan people.

It's them who played out Wan Hamidi.

Again, Gobind is the Information Minister who have control over Bernama. He's also probably the one who offered Wan Hamidi the CEO job.

How come Gobind didn't stand up for Wan Hamidi when the guy came under attack over the appointment?

If I'm Wan Hamidi, I would be angry at Gobind and the rest of DAP leadership for not backing me up.

How come they let the likes of Rais Yatim influenced the decision making process?

Yes, DAP leaders should have defended the decision to appoint Wan Hamidi as Bernama CEO.

But they didn't.

It makes me wonder whether DAP really appreciate people like Wan Hamidi.

Really, if I'm a DAP leader, I would appreciate the guy.

Well, it's all just too bad for him.

Idealists always get the lousy end of the stick.

Even in DAP.

Failed Spinner Annie ignores the hippo in the room.

Forget Bernama, what about Umno's own paper?

Umno’s internal disarray worsened today as a war of words broke out between a party leader and Malay daily Utusan Malaysia that is seen as its mouthpiece.

In an act of unusual audacity over the weekend, the newspaper’s editors pressed former Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak to apologise for misappropriating billions from 1MDB.

It is unclear who penned the piece written under the Awang Selamat pseudonym the newspaper’s editors share, but Umno’s Datuk Puad Zarkashi laid the blame squarely at the door of Utusan Melayu Bhd executive chairman Datuk Aziz Sheikh Fadzir.

“Aziz has gone too far as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has not even filed any charges regarding the slander that Najib stole RM2.6 billion of 1MDB’s money,” Umno’s former propaganda chief wrote in a letter to Utusan Malaysia.

“So, what is the basis for Aziz to accuse Najib of guilt and to demand his apology?”

    Heh heh heh.

Even Umno's OWN MOUTHPIECE is calling Jibros a LIAR.

    You know, lying, Annie?

The guy you keep quoting as a source of authority?

Why don't YOU praise Utusan for growing some teloq?

    By your logic...

...it's also a new dawn for journalistic freedom : )

      Don't worry lah, bro/sis.

It's just the "New & Improved" Annie crying crocodile tears over genuine journalism or freedom of speech.

Wow, Annie is so noble! She even loves the rule of law (only after 9th May, lah : )

      Funny, huh Annie : )

You didn't give a fuck when your bosses were banning local publications like TMI, Heat, Edge, etc(causing loss of livelihood to innocent journalists) - yet not a shred of evidence that the facts published were false; in fact, now the facts have been verified across 7 countries!

Nor when journalists were literally arrested and held in lock-ups - again, for reporting the truth for the benefit of the people.

That's the thing about Umgnok macais like Annie - they are as morally hypocritical as the kleptocrats they serve.

Gelak pecah perut ler...kih kih kih!

      Hmmmmmmmmm.

Actually Annie, it's good the new gomen backed down from having the appearance of an individual who might favour a political party.

But Bernama is just a news outlet.

What about the AGC? A lot more serious.

Remember how you protested loudly when Apandi (ex-Umgnok Kelantan Treasurer) was appointed A-G?

      Oh yeah....

The fact that he was handpicked to clear your pinklips idol and to allow 4.5 billion USD to be stolen from us - OK, kan?

100% halal. Look the other way, quick!

      LOL...

...like I say Annie, with macai like you, I'm pretty sure Umno will not even break 26% of the popular vote in PRU15, let alone 36% :)

"Associate Professor Faisal Hazis also pointed out that Najib seems to be in denial as he continues to defend “his track record and so on even on social media”.

He said the fact that the party demanded Najib’s resignation as president after the May 9 general election is proof Umno had already rejected him.

However, the reason the party did not lambast Najib immediately was because Umno and BN’s top guns were still being polite to the former premier while expecting him to lay low, attend to his multiple court cases and allow the new party leadership to take charge.

The lecturer believes the clash between Najib’s few supporters and the rest of the party is currently tearing the party apart.

“I think these vocal people who still support Najib will further split the party,” he said, citing the latest Twitter war between Khairy Jamaluddin and Lokman Adam. “This is not what Umno needs at the moment.”

“Najib should be a part of Umno’s history but that isn’t the case and this frustrates a lot of people in the party,” said Faisal, adding that Lokman’s insistent defence of Najib will be detrimental to his future in Umno."

      Bagus lah tu.

At least Zahid can chill as these two monkeys make all the official policy for Umno.

      One carrot and one crook.

      Sayonara, Umno.

Honestly the more DAP friendly people's services are cut short the better the same old Malaysia will be. ( I keep wondering why these Pakatan nincompoops ( they do poop a lot) use the word new Malaysia...its same old as far as the world Atlas map is!)

The other DAP guy's service cut short is that old man in Perak...keeps complaining day in day out with something new that he was cut short of his expertise of advice. Pls lah old man, don't do a thankless job, if people don't want your service just go lah, don't sulk and complain, after all you are already 85 years old, don't be grumpy...just vanish!

  2. Even Tok Mat says NO to more cover-ups.......

"The unusual editorial by the financially-distressed newspaper, in which Umno is the largest stakeholder, was just the latest sign of the growing rift within the party that has still not come to terms with its part in the 1MDB scandal.

On Saturday, just before a dialogue Najib organised to comment on current affairs, Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan issued a statement that effectively told Najib that his legal troubles were his own and that the party should not be blamed for or burdened by these.

Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin also openly disputed Najib the same day, telling the latter the party and Barisan Nasional were voted out purely over the 1MDB issue; the former prime minister sought to blame this on “lies and slander”.

Khairy also derided Umno supreme council member Datuk Lokman Noor Adam after the latter criticised him for “pointing fingers” at the party, telling Lokman that he would sack him from Umno for “having the IQ of a carrot” if he ever becomes Umno president."

Like I say, Annie, if all these people are cutting loose of the pinklips pirate, it just makes the handful of pro-Umgnok bloggers look even MORE stupid for defending corruption.

But hey - this is new dawn, kan?

    Do whatever floats your boat.

  11. It's good of Annie to keep tabs on what's going on in PH. She can be a good conscience-striker for the rakyat with regards the new government whose administration is still feeling its way around embedded Umno diehard elements.

That said, Wan Hamidi is a principled journalist who has burnished his credentials and experience in the wok of pro-citizen activism for reforma movements towards better governance.

DAP can still swing something good to repay him while helping him help his concern for nation.

Namely, get him a senatorship which will give him the sharpest platform in Parliament where he can be a voice for the country's journalists in more ways than being a Bernama CEO.

For his own upkeep, a senator's post doesn't pay well. Other doors should therefore be opened for him to use his talents in the private sector as well, perhaps in the advertising fraternity which will need someone who has a better handle on social media communication.

Let's hope whoever gets to be Bernama ceo will be worth the pain the rakyat faces from losing Wan Hamidi to that post. Which is basically just coordinative administration and not so much journalism.

Meanwhile, and one cannot stress this enough, PH must never associate with Rais. He's just an unprincipled political animal who sallies back and forth across the 3R border without a valid academic passport. He is no good for Malaysia. Has never been. Any association with M2.0 is to the latter's deficit, and therefore to the Pribumi for that matter the PKR groupings. He has only shown himself to be a disruptive and negative influence. Domestic, inasmuch foreign.

This on a 22.5-hectare plot of government land that the central bank had bought for RM2 billion in January this year, allegedly to bail out 1MDB, The Star Online reported today.

Quoting an unnamed highly-placed MACC source, the report said besides Muhammad, other officials at the bank were also questioned."

So, Jibby stole money from BNM and from BR1M, just to plug his theft from 1MDB.

I dont have a problem with that.

As a current Pakatan supporter, I do want others to tell me when they think something is not right with the way Pakstan does things.

I realise that not all Pakatan supporters share my views.

Maybe they only want to hear nice things being said, I dunno.

Yes, I know, criticism must be justified, but I dont mind even if it is not becos unjustified criticism only shows up the person criticising.

In his case, he was already offered the post, yes? For such a post, all checks would have been cleared. The retraction must therefore have been for some other reason outside the original appointment decision.

Hence, what is suggested here is that if it was just a political decision, steps should be taken not to penalize a good man because that reason, but instead to make the necessary amends.

If the private sector however declines, that's its privilege. But those who know him can be referee, and here i add, whether they be private or public sector themselves - since his area of expertise and experience is cross-sector.

"Following a stinging and rare rebuke against former Umno president Najib Razak on Sunday, a senior editor with Umno mouthpiece Utusan Malaysia said the paper should “repent” and re-evaluate its role to ensure its survival.

Assistant editor-in-chief I Mohd Zaini Hassan admitted in his column today that
the Malay-language newspaper had made a mistake all this while.

He said the newspaper should have remained neutral although it is owned by a political party.

“Utusan must change from being the eyes and ears of the party to become the voice of the people,” he wrote.

    Wahhhhh...."neutral" like Annie!

    Good.

He warned that Utusan would not survive unless it changed its ways.

“What is right is right and what is wrong will remain wrong. What is dirty stays dirty and what is clean is clean.

“If the whole world says it is dirty and you say it is clean, it will mean the end for Utusan,” Zaini said.
