Guan Eng, are you really stupid or is it just your poor BM ?

A friend forwarded this to me just now and I was like,
Alamak Guan Eng, this is not how a finance ministry should issue its press statement.

This sounds very kindergarten like, okay.

Hello, you are the finance minister now la.

Why still want to quarrel like that?

Just do your job.

Implement the SST and if you are right, all the prices of goods will go down and you will be the hero.

Why get so upset and issued such a silly press statement like that?

Is it because Guan Eng already knew that once SST is enforced, prices of goods will be even worse?

But still, he shouldn't lose his cool and turned childlike.

Seriously, now I'm really beginning to believe that Guan Eng is indeed stupid.

Actually, all these while I was just joking around about him not being bright enough.

I know that Guan Eng is an accountant and accountants are not stupid.

But now I'm not so sure anymore after reading that Guan Eng's childish statement.

Maybe there are stupid accountants.

Or is it his Bahasa Malaysia is not so good that the statement came out all stupid like that?

Maybe I should check his Chinese press statement....hmmm, see how lah.

Anyway, the guy who forwarded me the press statement also sent me this, saying it may help Guan Eng and his supporters to have some understanding of GST and SST;

Our Finance Minister does not seem to understand why there is a RM23b gap between GST and SST collections.

Let's get the basic out of the way first so we can agree on this:

*_Because zero-rating GST since last month did not see any drop in prices and some prices actually increased, imposing two new taxes - a 10% sales tax and a 6% service tax - WILL INCREASE prices for some goods and services. There will also be no reduction in prices compared to prices today_*

Okay, since we agree on the above, let's move on.

- The additional RM23b reduction in collection is because businessmen will now get to evade taxes because the self-policing system of GST no longer applies.
- Businessmen will now charge and collect service tax but will not remit to the government - just like before.
- The underworld and black economy (ah long, robbers, prostitutes and pimps, triads, pirated DVD sellers) which do not declare their business will no longer be paying  GST when they buy stuff.
- Also, the tourists and foreign workers who were previously paying GST no longer needs to pay any tax as they will not be buying goods such as white-goods or cars which will be hit by sales tax.

That is where the RM23b gone to while us everyday ordinary people have to contend with higher prices - even higher than before GST was zero-rated.

That is where your RM23b went. But did it go to the right persons?

Do you understand now, Mr. Finance Minister?

Can the Finance Minister give an assurance that no prices will increase after SST is implemented in September? Can he promise that prices will drop in September?

If not, just admit that you have screwed us, screwed our economic system and put us back into the dark ages of a tax system that few countries in the world still uses.

_Anti-Wayang_

So how?

Aiya,  don't worry too much  lah.

I think once the SST is back in place and if stuff get more expensive than before, we should all just adjust our personal budget again.

Eat kangkung enough la ya.

But if things get so bad that we couldn't adjust anymore, then we can always ask the government to revert back to GST.

Maybe it's okay if PH is the one implementing the GST....unlike BN-Umno.

Here's a good explanation on GST,
Just click on the link, okay.

Cheers.

  2. Dont understand the SST logic. As far that I know, the SST will be manually calculated by manufacturer or service providers. As this is manual , there will be always room to underdeclared the sales, or forfeit the SST .

For GST, there is already a good system in place that automate the capture of GST tax from the value chain; from manufacturer 》wholesaler》 retailer 》 consumer. And at each point, the manufacturer/wholesaler/retailer will collect 6% GST from their customer and pay to the government. The manufacturer/wholesaler/retailer can claim back the 6% GST from the government and theoretically the effective GST tax of the value chain will be only 6%.Unfortunately, perhaps the refund from the govt take longer time,to be safe, the businesman at wholesaler n retailer just compunded the tax.

Thr GST capture all sales transaction. With the data, government can detect under declared company tax and profit made by each company .This will bring additional income to the government from enforcement.

My view GST is a good thing but the perception is not because of issues with 1MDB.

My suggestion to the PH government, 1.Implement GST at 6%.
2.Improve the return of 6% tax to the businessmen and enforce no compounded tax charged to consumer
3.Use the big data collected to check under declared companies and enforced compliance
4.With the additional tax collected, provide more benefits to the hardcore poor.

Pakatan Harapan need to be smart. Not all things done by ex BN is bad to the country.Things like GST, MRT3 and HSR.

    1. 6 % of Gst on imported goods are collected immediately at entry points/ports
If these goods are unsold due to unforeseen circumstances you are unable to reclaim back your Gst from the custom
These losses are factored into the selling price with each new import
For an example within a period of two years for a particular brand of sardine has risen from six to almost ten ringgits
Forcus on the basket of controlled basic consumer items if possible reintroduce back the subsidies removed by past regime
Lge you are right on track

    2. Inflation hits 3 year low...

The abolishment of GST as well as discounts and price control measures during the Eid al-Fitr celebrations had a significant impact on prices of goods in June, the Statistics Department said in a statement.

The new government led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad, put in office after the May 9 general election, scrapped the 6% consumption tax on June 1.

In June, costs were down across all goods and services except for the transport index, which rose 5.5% from a year earlier due to higher domestic fuel prices, data from the department showed.

      Prices drop.

  4. Prices are like a cat. They know how to climb up, but don’t know how to go down. Once prices go up, they rarely come down. This is basic economy 101. Especially in food prices.

We had experience this many times before. Especially in Pak Lah’s time where he frequently revised fuel prices in huge margins resulted in basic consumer prices index shot through the roof. People got so upset and angry. They protested and went to the streets in large numbers.

The only way to prevent price hike is to prevent it to happen in the first place. Policy makers need to be careful with their words and actions because what they say and and do could influence the market.

There’s always reactions either good or bad. So they need to take into consideration everything including the possibility of price hike while formulating fiscal policies. That includes introducing new tax.

  6. Annie,

Under Pakatan Harapan, Malaysia is more luckier.

Now the world oil market goes sky rocket, now already US75 per barrel and the trend is going up.

Petronas can get so much more money and then will in return pay more tax.

The government get more income in billions.

Tun M wife, Siti Hasmah is very modest, not wearing pink diamond, so much jewelleries, Hermes, Prada, Birkin begs, Hublot watches.

    Curroption level had gone down.

Most of the money will goes to the rakyat.

Under LGE our finance is getting better by the day and I think soon we are going to like Brunei.

Now after Selangor, Johorean will also get free water.

I go to Tesco, service my car, buy spare parts, pay water, electricity, telephone bill, no more GST.

Our internet speed is going to increase 10x soon and life of Annie blogs will get 10x more visitors.

Things are so much better these days.

  7. The problem isn't GST or SST, the problem is enforcement and monitoring. When GST was in place, the business owners took the opportunity to increase their prices even if they weren't effected by GST. Prices sky rocketed and their was no proper monitoring and enforcement to ensure that business owners didn't increase prices willy nilly. Same as when GST was abolished, there was no enforcement to ensure that business really reduced their prices. The same thing when SST comes into place, business will just increase their prices by 10% or more and their would be no one to stop them. What we need is not a new or old tax system, what we need is proper enforcement.

Evrytimes the gov implemented something it will creates a temporary shock to the market tht something or services price wud not come down after tht.

  13. In free markets, prices are dynamic. If demand increases in view of more buyers expecting prices to fall, sellers may increase their base prices to make more profits in order to cover their losses incurred under the old tax regime or in the present situation retain their six percent which is what the trade survey found in many cases.

Secondly, the GST regime is a staircase tax structure. Technically, each step gets back the tax rebate; many a time tax refund was tardy under Umno. Furthermore, what the old regime didn't realize was that there was a multiplier effect and Mazlan fell impaled on that oversight. Thus when a rebate was late refunded, the seller hedged it into his price to the next down-line of the supply chain who then added six percent to the now abnormally enlarged price and next also hedged THAT sum for his next down-line until the final price was more than six percent; as was decried by one and all, in the region of 15-32 percent increases.

So it is nigh hard to reverse the GST multiplier effect because it takes only one supplier in the staircase supply chain not to do it and then the others in his downline can't. Post-GST enforcement is therefore unimaginably difficult for you will need extra manpower to target every level of the supply chain, and do that continuously twenty four by seven.

Moreover, a large quantity of local goods are made from imported materials, ergo ringgit weakening in the last three months has exacerbated the situation.

Of course, there is also a natural tendency for most prices to stick upwards whenever sellers see an opportunity to make more.

As to whether GST is a more efficient tax, certainly it is but the rakyat had suffered from it because the tax collector, ie the Umno government, had used the tax to fatten its own political appointees and cronies. Besides THOSE blings, baby.

Next, the SST is going to increase prices because some sellers will try to take advantage of the lack of computational knowhow about it. For instance, there is already a ten percent service charge at many restaurants and eateries which goes to the outlet so that adding SST will mean a higher tab if that service charge is not reduced. And sales tax in SST apply to some but not all goods. Sellers may scam on buyers' lack of knowledge on the actual list qualifying for sales tax. So before due, make sure everyone in the country knows everything about SST to manage expectations, and have the means to report immediately for enforcement to raid and media to publicize. Make that known to all in advance of implementation. Bad media kills business and caveat emptor.

Next taxes are as inevitable and inexorable as death so people will naturally notice it and that is why the new opposition will lose no time and spare no effort to tar the new government on tax matters. Such as we have been seeing with some weed-stoned half-baked subspecies even in this kabuki theater blog.

The new opposition forgets one thing. People are happy to pay whatever dues including taxes IF AND ONLY IF the government i.e. tax collector does not abuse or misuse the tax funds collected.

In the case of the old Umno regime, abuse and misuse was flagrant (except to Umno, not fragrant) until one need only recall the old bedroom story of the Forty Thieves. Isn't it coincidental that so many centuries later today, a turbaned man (namely our Amar Singh) would be the one opening the caves of treasure troves of the ex-Umno president now claimed by his cronies in the same old Umno party? Therefore, the MACC if it still has some wits about it should start looking quickly for the other 39, no? Yes, Arabian Nights are back, Annie (with those pillow eyes).

  28. Our Finance Minister,. Lim Guan Eng, does not seem to understand why there is a RM23b gap between GST and SST collections.

Let’s get the basic out of the way first so we can agree on this:

Because zero-rating GST since last month did not see any drop in prices and some prices actually increased, imposing two new taxes – a 10% sales tax and a 6% service tax – WILL INCREASE prices for some goods and services. There will also be no reduction in prices compared to prices today.

Okay, since we agree on the above, let’s move on.

    – The additional RM23b reduction in collection is because businessmen will now get to evade taxes because the self-policing system of GST no longer applies.
    – Businessmen will now charge and collect service tax but will not remit to the government – just like before.
    – The underworld and black economy (ah long, robbers, prostitutes and pimps, triads, pirated DVD sellers) which do not declare their business will no longer be paying GST when they buy stuff.
    – Also, the tourists and foreign workers who were previously paying GST no longer needs to pay any tax as they will not be buying goods such as white-goods or cars which will be hit by sales tax.

That is where the RM23b gone too while us everyday ordinary people have to contend with higher prices – even higher than before GST was zero-rated.

They can claim back their Gst later
Why collect in the first place
Then telling the whole world that extra tax are collected

  31. I can't wait for our ex "Nothing to Hide" PM Jibby to answer questions in Parliament. All these years he has been shielded from answering tough questions in Parliament by the then idiot speaker. Can't wait to see him being grilled for all the past scandals. That would be a wonderful sight indeed.

  33. Prof Nasi Lemak,

    //Belum 100 hari;//

I absolutely love your postings :)

    I really really do.

You are a fearless troll and you deserve recognition as one.

Just one word of advice if I may.

It is hard work to keep the hate and anger burning and it will be at least 10 years before UMNO gets a decent shot at regaining power again.

Actually, I suspect it will be 15 years, ie PRU17, but who knows, I might be on the same side as you then - unlikely, but who knows :)

Just bear in mind that if we are ever on the same side, you have to do all the hating and the angry bits, ok?

I am just hopeless at hating and angry stuff.
